Expedition

I took the train to Schieder and rode my bike for the rest of the distance. There were so many hills, it always went up and down again and again.

Shortly before reaching the site of the Geohash, I passed a woman and her small child walking three identical large dogs. I thought I made quite some noise riding the bicycle on an unpaved path full of dry leaves, but she did not hear me and I accidentally scared her when passing.

The Geohash was on a field next to this path. I entered the field, located the coordinates and recorded proof. It seems that there were some horse tracks on the field, but I could not see any horses.

When I left the field, the woman arrived and passed me. I rested on a tree stump near the path and drank some water. After some time, the woman returned, walking back the way she came from. When I rode back, our paths crossed a fourth time when I passed her again. It was starting to get a bit awkward, but at least this way the end of it.

I did not ride back to Schieder immediately. First, I wanted to see the confluence point 52,9, which is only a few kilometers away. After all, it is the corner that my home graticule 52,9 is named after. There even is a plaque on a stone nearby the point. The stone is located at 51.9985,8.9990 (disappointingly not in the 52,9 graticule), the actual point is on a nearby field. Near the confluence point, there are a few trees growing around a hole in the earth. I was not sure if it really was just a hole or a small pond, but I did not figure it out.

Meanwhile, the sun had set and it was getting dark. I rode the bicycle back to the train station in Schieder, up and down the hills. Once, a car blinded me with its bright front lights and I rode right into a ditch because I did not see the bike path taking a turn. But I survived, got out, and made it back to the train station just in time to take the train back to Hannover.
