Revision as of 22:26, 25 August 2012

Welcome to Seattle

... once the most active graticule on our planet. It rains a lot here, but that doesn't deter our intrepid geohashers. Current expedition discussions at the top of the this page. Archived discussions on the past page.

August 24-26

Friday is on a forested hillside on the peninsula; Sunday a backyard near Bonney Lake. Saturday is potentially reachable, and I have proposed an alternate location a mere 300m away, then we walk to the point for an attempt. Games this time? What say you all? --Thomcat 10:11, 24 August 2012 (EDT)

Unfortuantely team p4r4digm is out of the game this weekend. Prior engagement has me tied up through monday. Attain some epic spots for me! Hope your california trip was awesome :D - P4r4digm 12:51, 24 August 2012 (EDT)
I'll bike down on Saturday - shall we meet at the alternate at 4pm? Or when exactly? Can't stay for games though, as this will be a break from packing for a Sunday move! -- OtherJack 14:12, 24 August 2012 (EDT)
Sunday out for me also - leaving town. Meet at 4pm sharp sounds good, right by the softball field (as indicated on the alternate). --Thomcat 14:57, 24 August 2012 (EDT)
Sounds like a plan -- OtherJack 15:05, 24 August 2012 (EDT)
I'll do my best to be there at 4pm, but may have to end up going later depending on my schedule. I will, of course, bring games. --AeroIllini 15:09, 24 August 2012 (EDT)
I'm fine to reschedule to later, if you want to change it -- OtherJack 15:32, 24 August 2012 (EDT)
4pm is looking good. Let's keep it then. Is the alternate location posted somewhere? Saturday's meetup doesn't have an expedition page yet. --AeroIllini 20:45, 24 August 2012 (EDT)

Ahh, I see it, thanks. I usually go straight to Google Maps, so I didn't think to check Peeron. --AeroIllini 20:57, 24 August 2012 (EDT)
Late cancel - can't make it today. --Thomcat 18:26, 25 August 2012 (EDT)

August 17-19

Friday is just off the coast of the peninsula - perhaps swimmable, if anyone is over there. Saturday is on the back porch of 4467 141st Ave SE Bellevue, and would require an ambassador to visit this rather nice home. 4pm anyone? What is that star-trek shaped house NW of this one?!? Sunday is towards the edge of a farmer's field just south of Flaming Geyser State Park, which isn't quite as cool as it sounds. --Thomcat 10:08, 17 August 2012 (EDT)

I soooo want to try the beach one near silverdale but have to work and would run into the same issue of nightfall as I did on Whidbey :( Saturday's sounds fun and awesome! Who knows, maybe we convince the residents the start hashing and they get closer than anyone's ever gotten for the couch potato! I'll talk to the people who were interested of coming along saturday and try to figure out what time works for everyone. May skip on sunday just to chill :P --P4r4digm 10:12, 17 August 2012 (EDT)
From my research (which may no longer be accurate) that Bellevue house is the property of a Richard Haase[1], a retired republican[2] whose wife, Marie, is an assistant librarian at Forest Ridge School[3]. Semi-elderly school librarian? I have a feeling they'd go for a cordial visit from the internet :) --P4r4digm 10:39, 17 August 2012 (EDT)
I just created the meetup page 2012-08-18 47 -122 for Saturday's point. I plan on being there (I stated the standard 4:30 time, but I can be flexible). I would be more comfortable being Official Internet Ambassador to the good Mr. and Mrs. Haase if there were more people than just me present. Would it still count as a successful hash if we only made it to the street in front of the house? ---AeroIllini 14:57, 17 August 2012 (EDT)
Awesome! I got 2 friends I'm dragging along and it sounds like Thomcat is on board as well. Suggestion for better chances of success: Wear semi nice clothes and be respectful! I think we'll plan to be there around 4 and hangout till everyone arrives. And there's an Applebee's not far from there over in Factoria if anyone wants to get dinner after :D -- P4r4digm 15:02, 17 August 2012 (EDT)

August 16

Really easy meetup location today, in a street in Wallingford! Thomcat already went this morning but we will try to re-converge this afternoon or evening. See the page 2012-08-16 47 -122 for planning... -- OtherJack 12:51, 16 August 2012 (EDT)

Was nice meeting you guys :) --P4r4digm 10:13, 17 August 2012 (EDT)
Good to meet you as well! -- OtherJack 13:33, 17 August 2012 (EDT)

August 3-5

Saturday is in the drink and Sunday is on the base, so that leaves today's spot (next to a private lake just north of 12715 Old Snohomish Monroe Rd) or an alternate meetup on Saturday. Open to alternate suggestions here - just want to attend my 10th Saturday meetup. Anyone? --Thomcat 11:16, 3 August 2012 (EDT)

Saturday's Snoqualmie point looks interesting, in the mountains but only about 2 miles (crow flies) up a valley from a forest service road. I was thinking of going to look at some hiking maps to see if there's a trail up that valley (or do you know yourself whether there is?) If you're feeling less ambitious / have less time, we could meet at the spring in Licton Springs Park, 9536 Ashworth Ave N... I've always meant to check it out sometime... -- OtherJack 13:05, 3 August 2012 (EDT)

Licton Springs is good, 4:00pm. We will be meeting here to try and find this feature. I'll add an expedition page later today. --Thomcat 16:36, 3 August 2012 (EDT)
Sweet, I'll be there at 4. Also, good job using two different realizations of the word "geohash" at one go... -- OtherJack 16:56, 3 August 2012 (EDT)

July 20-22

Friday and Sunday are out on the peninsula - today is particularly wet. Regarding Saturday, in the far south end, take a look at the satellite photo. What is that thing just SW of the hashpoint? AG link None of the surrounding roads show up on the google or peeron map either. OSM thinks it's part of the airbase. --Thomcat 09:41, 20 July 2012 (EDT)

Zillow and Bing maps confirm that it's part of the military base; google needs to get their maps up to snuff. Street view shows the roads leading to it as fenced also. My guess - a former military camp site - current zillow shows it to be a flat field. Another Saturday out of bounds! --Thomcat 10:45, 20 July 2012 (EDT)

Sunday's actually looks quite reachable, in a short driveway of some sort very close to Bremerton. Maybe I'll go - will post if I decide to. -- OtherJack 14:21, 20 July 2012 (EDT)

July 13-15

Fairly close to Bremerton tonight (south of Beaver Dam lake); your Bastille day hash is near the northwest corner (just off the Beaver Valley road); Sunday is east of Shelton along the peninsula (which has an East Beaver Lane, though it's across the Hammersley inlet).

Saturday alternate location will be the Bastille Cafe in Ballard at 4:00 pm. Also going on this day is the Ballard Seafood Fest, so plenty of fun for all. --Thomcat 16:56, 13 July 2012 (EDT)

You don't think that cafe will be a little crowded on its namesake day? I could be convinced though. Also looking into trying to ride to Sunday's Snoqualmie hashpoint, in what looks like a dairy farm driveway just outside Enumclaw... -- OtherJack 17:55, 13 July 2012 (EDT)

July 6-8

Friday night at the Best Buy in Silverdale, Saturday in the woods, and Sunday in the Cedar River. No Saturday alternate for me - I'll be working a baseball game at Husky Stadium in Seattle (not the one that's half torn down). 4:00 would be roughly the 3rd or 4th inning, if you want to drop by and say hi. --Thomcat 10:04, 6 July 2012 (EDT)

I'll be busy elsewhere on Saturday but I'm thinking of trying to hit that Best Buy tonight after work - it's not a very long ride from the Bremerton ferry dock... --OtherJack 12:55, 6 July 2012 (EDT)

June 29-July 1

We end June with the left side of the graticule, and that means island, water, and the edge of a lake on the peninsula. My alternate proposals are the Olympic Sculpture Park - special exhibit Encontro das Águas (Encounter with Waters); or the Heaven and Earth Exhibition at Carkeek Park. Got another suggestion? Post it here! --Thomcat 10:00, 29 June 2012 (EDT)

June 22-24, 2012

Unlike the normal Seattle geohash weekend (water, water, water) this weekend it's Woods, Woods, and Woods (the latter private property on Vashon Island). Proposed Saturday 4:00 meetup location - Math 'n' Stuff

I could do that - I've never actually gone in there, even though it's only a half mile from my house. May still try to bike to the Sunday one and ask whoever's home, though. --OtherJack 13:10, 22 June 2012 (EDT)

June 21, 2012

Oh, I wish I had a day off - this is at the top of Squak Mountain, and would be a fun (and challenging) expedition. --Thomcat 18:28, 21 June 2012 (EDT)

June 20, 2012

For the Longest Day, our geohash is in the woods. According to Zillow, it is this [1] property. Looking at the birds eye view, there are a lot of high trees. Anyone going? --Thomcat 11:46, 20 June 2012 (EDT)

Long way to go on a weeknight for me, by default I wasn't going to. Is there a longest day ribbon or something? --OtherJack 14:18, 20 June 2012 (EDT)
For me also. No ribbon - yet. --Thomcat 17:53, 20 June 2012 (EDT)

Friday, June 1, 2012

Today's is in the left-turn lane of 169 a few miles east of Renton, if anyone was going to drive that way anyhow... --OtherJack 13:00, 1 June 2012 (EDT)

Mouseover Day (Saturday, May 26) 2012

The Snoqualmie graticule hashpoint looks best for me - I'll try to be there around 4pm. See the expedition page for planning etc. --OtherJack 12:21, 25 May 2012 (EDT)

May 4-5, 2012

Today's (Fri) is in a front yard in Madrona, I'm going for it after work! See the page for more details. I'm up for either the Seattle or Snoqualmie graticule ones tomorrow (Sat). Leaning towards Snoqualmie, as I could bike there on quieter roads. OtherJack 13:26, 4 May 2012 (EDT)

All right, I'm definitely going for Snoqualmie tomorrow (Sat)...

April 26, 2012

Today it's on northbound I-5, after 599 but before Boeing Access Road / MLK, in the second-to-rightmost lane. Just a heads up if anyone was going to drive that way today. (I'm not unfortunately.) OtherJack 13:11, 26 April 2012 (EDT)

March 23-25, 2012

Friday's is out in a field somewhere that may-or-may-not-be thwarted by clear and obvious No Trespassing signs. We could probably gain easy access to Friday's in the daylight, but I'm not sure I'd risk getting shot at at night...which is a shame, because I'm sure there would be somewhere nice to camp around here too. It's about 250m from a road, right past obvious houses, but approaching from the northwest could work I guess (if you're a ninja).

Saturday's looks like it's along a not-quite-private road, which may or may not be in someone's back yard; Bing Maps has more hopeful roads than Google Maps, and it looks like they go around it rather helpfully. Google's map view shows a big, unoccupied looking land plat. This is reachable. It's also about 3km from Friday's.

Sunday's is a bit west of Bremerton, and looks like it has alligators, about 30m off "shore" if you could call it that. A small kayak should suffice.

Not sure I can make any of these though. --Traveller 13:37, 23 March 2012 (EDT)

I could go Saturday but wouldn't be able to leave Seattle til after 3. Today I'm working and Sunday I'm doing something else most of the day (and don't have a kayak or anything of the sort...) - OtherJack 14:07, 23 March 2012 (EDT)

Likewise on the busy-ness here. Friday = can't leave 'til 8:30PM, Saturday = need to be in Bellevue 9:30-11:00 so no camping (unless it's a super early morning), Sunday = need to be in Lynnwood at 3:00 onward. I'm up for Saturday if we're real excited about going, but it might be worth it to hold off for a later event on our side of the water.

Then again, if a west-side hasher wants to show up, I'm all for heading over there. --Traveller 14:27, 23 March 2012 (EDT)

I'm also kind of on the fence... don't really feel like driving there and i'd be leaving way too late for biking to be fun. If you drive there I might hitch a ride. I don't think there are any kitsap or olympic area hashers though unfortunately... - OtherJack 14:46, 23 March 2012 (EDT)

Alright, let's just organize a picnic on this side of the sound then! Got a preference for place or time? Either side of the lake works for me. --Traveller 15:05, 23 March 2012 (EDT)

Sure, why not - I'm going to be in downtown Seattle tomorrow afternoon anyway so we could just say 4pm somewhere near there. I'm not big on cheesecake but pie is great. (Not that you're required to bring it... I won't be able to bring anything that awesome.) OtherJack 15:30, 23 March 2012 (EDT)

March 17, 2012

I may try a St. Paddy's Day hash in Lake Stevens at 4pm - it's on what google maps satellite shows as a construction site, so might be a finished something by now. Not sure if I'll go though. Post here or on the page if you're interested --OtherJack 12:45pm Friday March 16

February 20, 2012

I'm going to try this one - see the page for details. Times/plans are very flexible. --OtherJack 9pm Sunday (Pacific)

February 11, 2012

Green Lake geohash!!!! And it's a Saturday to boot. I am going to see if the park rents those paddleboats or other boats this time of year. Or, if you have a boat, please feel free to join this thread! --OtherJack

Never mind, boat rentals are off for the winter, but will still try to wade / hope for other geohashers with boat... --OtherJack 11:28am Friday (PST)

I'll try to do these things at 4pm, just to clarify. --OtherJack 11:44am Saturday (PST)

January 28, 2012

Snow conditions and time permitting I'm going to try the hash over in the Snoqualmie graticule just east of us, on Tiger Mountain. See here for more info. If I actually attempt to do this I'll probably make it up there around 4:30 or 5 pm. --OtherJack

May 27, 2011

This Saturday (tomorrow) is in Kirkland, which is almost Seattle. Any interest? Jack 21:32, 27 May 2011 (EDT)

February 5, 2011

Again in the water, south of Magnolia. If multiple other people are interested, I'll go for meeting at the nearest point on the shore. Jack 09:59, 4 February 2011 (EST)

Or maybe at the park on the bluff; I'm not sure if that beach is accessible. The tide won't be that high but will be rising. Jack 10:07, 4 February 2011 (EST)

January 27, 2011

Some of us might get this one by accident. It's right on I-405 Northbound, left lanes, by exit 22 (a little south of the 522 interchange). --Traveller 16:48, 27 January 2011 (EST)

January 22, 2011

A great spot for a water acheivement. Were it not January I'd bring my Hobie out there, but it is and I'd rather be inside. Anyone up for planned-location meetup one of these days? Jack 02:18, 22 January 2011 (EST)
