Expedition

thepiguy and srs0

Thepiguy and srs0 set out from their place at 18:00. They headed south, directly into a strong headwind. Upon reaching Winterhausen, they took the proper route and arrived at the geohash without any difficulty. They then looked at the time, 18:35, and settled down to wait for Danatar who was expected at around 19:15. Thepiguy lay down in the grass on the side of the road while srs0 wandered around for a bit and then sat in the middle of the road.

Danatar

When Danatar came home from work, he started to prepare his birthday cakes (a large one for work, a small one for his friends and a tiny one for geohashing) because the dough would need time to rest. At 18:25 he set out by bike. After being held up on the way by phone calls he tried to go as fast as possible so srs0 and thepiguy wouldn't have to wait too long for him. When he reached the hashpoint he was totally exhausted.

Together

After Danatar arrived (around 19:20-19:25), the three took some pictures. Danatar then announced he would try for the speed racer, which would be easy since the hashpoint was on the road on a relatively steep hill. One could easily coast to ~25km/h, maybe even 30km/h, which was the speed limit. Thepiguy then announced he was going to try to get the speed racer going up the hill instead (he already has the achievement, so he was just having some fun). While Danatar prepared, thepiguy went to the bottom of the hill and raced upwards. 28km/h, however, wasn't fast enough! So he tried again, once again got 28km/h, and then stopped.

Danatar, on the other hand, elected to go down the hill. His first attempt was far over 30km/h, so he tried again. The second time was 31km/h, but he still wasn't satisfied. On the third attempt, he was confident that the video would contain a frame showing 30km/h at the correct location (where srs0 was standing).

In his attempts, Danatar had found plum trees and a tree farther up the road that had many over-ripe pears. On the final speed racer attempt, he had picked one of them up, and proceeded to eat it. The looks on his face as he took pictures of him eating the "hash pear" are scary, and it's at this point when srs0 and thepiguy wondered if Danatar's job was starting to get to him. Especially once he tried to take a picture of the pear with his hashscot and said that he "wish[ed] he had some needles to stick through [the hashscot's] hands to hold the pear in place", all the while with a maniacal grin on his face! No, I said it would be useful, but too cruel.

Danatar's sanity was further called into question when a dog appeared up the road. Danatar made a mischievous face, looked at the dog, and said "we will all pet that dog when it comes by, and take pictures of it, and it will be a hash dog!" However, the owner was apparently scared and/or suspicious of Danatar, as she and the dog came to within around 15m before promptly turning back and heading up the road where they came from! Danatar was distraught, and then looking in the other way, saw another dog! He started looking after the other dog with a gleam in his eyes, but unfortunately for him the other dog was being walked past the street we were on, and therefore was also not a hash dog.

After finally admitting that there was not going to be a hash dog this time, Danatar, srs0, and thepiguy headed home. They took their time on the way back, with Danatar giving thepiguy some German lessons as they rode, and got back to Würzburg in the final stages of twilight.

Danatar earned the Speed racer achievement
by passing through the (49, 10) geohash on 2009-09-03 at 30 km/h on his bike.

Is it true that Danatar earned the Hashdog gratuitous ribbon for petting a dog at the hashpoint?
In principle, yes.
But he didn't pet the dog.
And the dog was not at the hashpoint.
Instead, the dog owner turned around 15m from them and fled. (2009-09-03 49 10).
