Plans

Well, since I discovered gehashing, not a year ago, and after some digging discovered the air geohash achievement, and how it has been done before in a commercial flight, I have been checking my flights since then. Sometimes trying it with my own GPS, but it usually won't work, so I have been comparing the flight tracklog that can be downloaded from the internet, and which is pretty precise.

Expedition

Sourcerer calulated that in a mid-length flight you have 25% chance of success. Well, for reasons, I have been fliying Barcelona <-> Berlin/Hamburg a few times this year, and after 7 flights... in the 8th try I seem to have passed by a geohash :)

I mean, the expedition was such of a journey. Waking early up, around 06:30 to be taken to the airport by my father at 07:30 (he couldn't do it sooner), but my flight wasn't departing untill 11:20. Does that mean I got really bored at the airport? Well no. For starters, the traffic was terrible. At this time, entering Barcelona by car is a nightmare, I can't understand how there is people who can stand being stuck in traffic jams every morning...

I did, however, arrive at the airport with plenty of time. But I am getting used to it, waiting on airports. I searched for a few geocaches outside the security area, and after that, well, waited for my plane. While waiting, I prayed for a while to the gods of geohashing wishing for two things: first, let the forums of xkcd be running back again soon to share our experiences again with the community; and second, if they have still a little power, let the plane cross today's geohash on any of the 30 graticules you will be crossing.

If you are reading this, it seems that both of those prayers were conceded. Since I was sitting on the isle I didn't even bother to try to record the path with my own GPS. On the other side, even sitting on the window, I haven't been able to make it work either. Nevertheless, I always download the tracklog of the flight from a website, and then check if I cross any geohashes.

Last time, I flew near by a geohash over Madrid, but not close enough. This time, right after taking off, it seems I passed by the geohash on 41,2, the taking off graticule, by 150 meters, within the requirements of 10-arc-seconds or 0.00278 degrees or 310 metres stated on the achievment description.

The journey did not end here. The rest of the flight with no problems, nice landing in Hamburg. After that, I had a free hours in the north-german city until I had to take a bus, and almost 4 hours later I was arriving in my city. Curious, it's longer the inner-country part of the journey than the inter-country part ^^.
