The Christmas Day hashpoint fell less than 1km from this 2010-09-19_52_0 September point. There is a photo in the gallery below showing the terrain in daylight in September. It was wet then too but today, the water was a lot deeper.
At 48 minutes past midnight in misty moonlight there was no way Neil was going to attempt to cross the thin ice. Using a disused railway line, now a public footpath, he got to within 85 metres of the point. Google Earth suggested there might be an access path but this turned out to be even deeper water. It was a drainage ditch through the trees. Even in summer, this would be a difficult point to reach involving wading through water and mud. Leeches anyone?
Was the expedition a failure? Not at all!
Walking through silent moon-lit frozen snow-covered woodland just after midnight on Christmas Day was an awesome experience. Approaching the area in the car was an experience too. There were many deer and rabbits and one over-confident deer played chicken with the approaching car. Neil slowed right down not wishing to gain the "Bambi-Killer" Geohash Award.
Many people celebrate Christmas Eve by getting drunk in the pub. Some watch TV with or without alcohol. Some by go to Midnight Mass. Neil chose the pagan alternative by celebrating nature on a beautiful frosty moon-lit night. He did not however dance naked round the trees!
Neil gains the MNB consolation prize because the frozen wetland was too dangerous to cross.
Sourcerer earned the Done with Nature consolation prize

Neil chickened out. A "real" geohasher would have gone equipped with lights, a pickaxe and a wetsuit to cross the terrain.
