Today I employed strategic incompetence. I followed the road with my head buried in my tech' toys, just like most teenagers, so I missed the signpost to the public footpath. At the end of the road, I followed another path, presumably not public, but there were no barriers or signs. This led to a reed bed with drainage ditches. The hashpoint was on the wrong side of a ditch which I discovered when one foot sank into the watery mud. I should have known because, my GPSr using OpenStreetMap clearly displayed the ditch in its correct position even though it was hidden in the tall reeds. Luckily there was another route only a few metres away. I was able to zero the distance in spite of the soggy reedy terrain.

New Zealand were beating Australia at rugby which might explain the lack of people out and about.

Expedition

Then I retraced my steps, found the correct signed path and followed it towards the river to enjoy the unusual fine autumn weather. I was not challenged, or even noticed, as far as I could tell, so I did not need my strategic excuse. New Zealand were beating Australia at rugby which might explain the lack of people out and about.
