Expedition

Benpicco

While I got home later than expected, the decision to go for the hash was still unclear. But eventually Franz and Christian convinced me on IRC to come (reverse drag along maybe?). After questioning the BVG website it seemed that I'd easily by there by 23:30, having all time to reach the hash. But unfortunately I missed that bus. So I took my bike riding to the train station in the hope that soon some S-Bahn would take me further away from here, but when I arrived, there was none. Being trapped in Spandau, I feared the hash was too far away, but yet it was not my intention to give up. I called christian asking him for the next departing train and whether it would make it in time. Fortunately, there was a RegionalExpress soon to depart that would take me to Berlin, but it would be tight. After a rather long and eventless train ride, past Lichterfelde Süd and Lichterfelde Ost, I eventually arrived in Teltow, but there was not not much time left. Fortunately there was already christian awaiting me, and after a short while franz was joining in, too. Together we ran towards the hash point, along contorted allay ways until we finally reached the animal cemetery. The glooming electric candles drew a ghostly light upon the daedal tombs, along one could hear the sounds of electric(?) birds. It was fascinating. But we had not much time to ponder, as the clock was ticking towards midnight, so we hesitated through the glittering graves until we finally found Hiro awaiting us at the hash. We took pictures and placed a XKCD mark made of glow sticks at the hash. Luckily there were some benches nearby, so we took our time to sit around, enjoying the atmosphere of the electric pet cemetery while being watched by the full moon.

first try

Friday night I was clubbing at K17 with Jub, JP and Marc. When they drove me to Teltow at 4 in the morning, I tried to convince them to visit the geohash, but since they were not overly enthusiastic and I wasn't that sure about the location, we dropped this plan.

Anyway, a few hours of good sleep seemed more important at the time!

another try to go for the hash

Somehow the decision was made to try this as a midnight geohash. Ben announced he would arrive at the S Teltow Stadt at 23:30 and we hoped we would be able to make it to the hash in time. Christian, Franz and I decided to all meet there. But before we even left, Ben told us he had missed his bus and would arrive at the S-Bahn station at 23.52...

Franz and I wanted to take the bus at 23.01, but that Havelbus didn't turn up, and so after waiting for 10 minutes we started walking down Potsdamer Straße. After walking for 300 metres the bus overtook us, of course -.- Damn Havelbus! I had finally remembered to bring my Poi to get the Circus geohash. We met Christian at corner Striewitzweg and greeted us with "Oh, I didn't think YOU were those crazy people" - what's so crazy about spinning poi while walking through the night?? We walked on and turned right into Weinbergweg

Our way to the hash in short notes (you will also find these oon the map):

  • back gate to the cementary is closed, but they tell you to try the front. How do we get there?
  • Let's walk across the field (this always is a goood geohashing idea isn't it?)
  • We're walking along the fence around the cementary
  • Another fence in front! Lets walk right
  • Hey, no fence any more
  • Maybe this is the way to the cementary
  • Oh another fence!
  • I guess we can walk over this building site
  • the entrance to the animal cementary
  • will it be open?
  • Yes, it's open!
  • What are those mounds over there at the geohash?
  • Maybe elephant pets buried there?
  • Geohash reached!

at the hash

Yay, we made it! We at this point still meant Christian, Franz and me. It was about 23.35 an Ben was still on his way. Would he also be able to make it? We thought he wouldn't find the way to the hash on his own, but I didn't want to leave the hash and maybe miss the chance of an midnight geohash. After we took some circus geohash pictures and made photos of the location, it was decided that I stay at the hash and the two went to fetch Ben.

So I stayed there.

Alone.

On the cementary.

Oh and did I mention we had no flash lights? But I held out in the dark, and bravely stayed at the hash. At 23.55 I started to practise taking pictures of my mobile with Franz' mobile (to prove the time). At 23.58 I heard hurried steps approaching. A wild animal? Tomb raiders? Luckily it was Ben and the others! We quickly took some stupid grin pictures of all of us and tried capturing the time. But all my practice had been useless (see pictures) :/

after midnight

We stayed at the hash for another half an hour, everybody took turns at spinning poi and playing around with glow sticks. The boys also found a tree to climb. Apes!

At 00:30 we made our way back to Franz home, because I was getting cold. All in all a very nice hash once more :)
