Congratulations!

On your first hash and the first hash in Luxembourg. I enjoyed the story much! -- Relet 22:41, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

meetup graticule bug

Hi, just thought you'd like to know I finally found and fixed the bug in the meetup graticule template. Sorry it took so long! Matty 00:16, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Cool!

We are going to use your Hash Collision ribbon as an example for ours. Danke! NCBears

Sorry

Just deleted you entry in Template:Expedition_Images/2009-01-07. I added it back in again. No offence ment. Looking forward to your story. The images already look very promising. --Nahtanoj 23:34, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Offline / Computer problems log

2009-03-26

This morning my computer decided to end its lifespan. I checked a number of possibilities and it's probably the mainboard or processor. A new computer or spare parts to get it running again are not in sight anywhere, so it may be quite some time until I can do any serious work done including taking part here. I'll try to hit an internet cafe from time to time, and some geohashers have my phone number. Also, I can read email from the mobile phone, but not reply.

2009-03-28: Update

  • Got an offer I can't refuse but may take a few more days until I can pick it up (and some time more to get it running).
  • Trying to go hashing anyway ;)
  • Internetcafe is only a few minutes by bike and affordable for a quick "check the most urgent things"
  • I hate Micro$oft (but the Internetcafe uses their crap).

The replacement is here. The good thing: It seems to work, somehow. Also, I basically only had to pay for transport and swap in something I wanted to give away anyway.

Apart from that, it's probably what results if you tell someone to build a computer that has to be all silver-blue, and cheap (at least in production). Rarely seen plastic parts of such bad quality, and stingy case interiors (Example: To save a few grams of metal, there is only one harddisk slot, and that's at a very annoying place to reach. There is lots of empty space at a reasonable place). Also it boots only after ignoring a number of timeouts which takes forever, and there is a number of other unresolved issues. I'll probably disassemble the whole thing and reassemble it in another case. With less "design" and more usability.

Why Is Cake Singular?

Because in English the stuff that is cake refers to as much of it as you need. "A lot of cake". "Cakes" would refer to plural whole cakes. I actually anticipated that you would ask that and included it on the Category page. -Robyn 03:32, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Garmin eTrex serial cable

Hey ekorren, I would love to know how to make the cable for the eTrex. I'm assuming the first generation GPS is the one that reads "High sensitivity" just above the screen and does not have that joystick thing in the top left? -Ephphatha 13:49, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

The "high sensitivity" model Etrex H is the third generation of etrexes, and it's the one I now have, but all of the generations of the base models (i.e. the one without joystick, maps and any other fancy stuff) use the same serial interface. I'm using my home made cable with the Etrex H now, and it works fine. Those self-made cables are serial cables, though, so they require a RS-232 interface on your computer or an adapter, which I don't know anything about. I'll send you more information by mail. --Ekorren 14:54, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Did you see the post on your graticule page? Take a look! We'll be there! Thepiguy 16:50, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Saw it, but I hoped you would choose another day or another location. Don't really want to pay so much ticket money for a high risk of No Tresspassing at a not very thrilling location in my own graticule. I can get that often enough much cheaper. --Ekorren 16:55, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Tron

The Tron achievement has a real ribbon now, which you probably want to switch to. -Robyn 18:48, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Bridges and Salesmen

I think your opposition was very clear and well-worded, but one thing confused me. Don't Europeans get the weekend hashes on Thursday afternoon, and Australians late on Thursday night? We get ours first thing in the morning on Friday, but the poor Newfoundlanders don't get them until 11 a.m. on Friday. Or do you get your Saturday, Sunday, Monday ones all on Friday afternoon? -Robyn 02:58, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

No, we use Friday's DJIA opening for Sat, sun, mon (since the dow opens on my friday night). --joannac 03:06, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
It's like a little compensation for 30W people getting every weekday the night before: non-30Ws have all day (for various values of "all day" depending on time zone) Friday in which to plan Saturday. -Robyn 04:43, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
The definition of W30 was IIRC, that whenever the DJIA of the same day is not available at noon, you use the one before. On saturdays, that's friday's for everyone. So, indeed, while we have the advantage of more planning time for weekday expeditions, for the weekend the americans have. This is probably also a reason why both epic german meetups were on sundays, not saturdays. It wouldn't have been possible to plan that all out in one evening. --Ekorren 08:34, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Well Wishes

Get well soon ekorren! Sorry to hear you are too ill to go geohashing. --aperfectring 20:01, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Hash trees

Hey, nice tree. Re the new category, what's it for? Trees exactly at the hashpoint or just trees in general? - Robyn

I may have coined the term (long ago, btw) - I use it for trees at or very close to the hashpoint. The category has been created by relet and he even defined it more strict. --Ekorren 22:47, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
Now I see that you have changed it to Hash tree, and that's an existing category. So I don't need to do anything about it. - Robyn.
