We spent a long weekend in NYC to support J's sister in the NYC Marathon that was run on Sunday (2024-11-03). Arriving on Friday, we went to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island (J's friend works in the Parks Department and gave us a quick tour on Ellis). Saturday, we explored Central Park and kind of figured out how the Marathon was going to finish; where we needed to be and all that. We also got rush tickets in the morning for the evening show called Suffs (about the Suffragettes and their movement in the early 1900's. Sadly, many themes are still relevant today). Sunday was dedicated to the Marathon. We had four stops planned and our first stop was in Brooklyn near Union Station on 4th St. We ended up meeting a friend I worked with at Summer Camp many years ago and she lived almost exactly where we wanted to be for that first stop between miles 7 and 8! Then we walked up 4th St to the Train Station and got to Northern Brooklyn to see her run by at mile 12. Unfortunately, there was a turn in the race course and being right at the bend, she wasn't looking around and there was too much noise to get her attention. That was our tightest leg as we were only standing there for a few minutes before she came around the corner. Back to the train station and back to Manhattan (we stayed not too far from Times Square) to 1st St. right around mile 17 or so. Here we thought she was going to run by us again, but as she was even with us, she snapped her head around and saw us. She said she heard her son's voice and was able to greet us again. We then walked over to 5th St and found a place in Central Park for our last stop near mile 23. It was cool to go and support her and get to see NYC for the first time.

Our flight home on Monday wasn't until the evening, but like Saturday, we didn't have much planned out ahead of time. We started at the World Trade Center Memorial and then met one of J's co-workers (that works in NYC) for lunch. I have to admit it wasn't until Sunday that I remembered to check the Hashes for the weekend, but unshockingly, there wasn't any decently close hashes to go to (fortunately). However! Monday is a new day and I not only got to see it happened to be close enough to get the subway to, but it landed in a Brooklyn Cemetery which would be accessible! I asked if J wanted to go after lunch, since we didn't really have any plans, but made it clear if she didn't want to go, we could split up and she could do something else while I chased imaginary points for the internet.

She was game, and we didn't have any trouble getting to the hash. Although, google maps wanted us to walk all the way to the other side of the Cemetery and then walk all the way through it to get practically back to the main gate. Granted, the main gate looked mostly like a vehicle entrance, there wasn't anyone to yell at us not to walk on through. Looking at the HashDroid app, I counted off the 8 or 9 rows before heading out onto the grass to pinpoint the Hash. I found it half a step away from an Obelisk belonging to the McDermott family where Sarah and Thomas (Mother and Son) have been buried since 1911 and 1912 respectively. I have honored them with a Coffin-Potato Ribbon below.

Not only is this a new Graticule for me, but I get to add to my New York State tally, hopefully covering the entire state (someday). Heading back to Manhattan, we explored the MET (NYC Art Museum) until they closed at 17:00 and made our way back to the hotel to pick up our luggage before heading to the airport and home.
