My name is Neil.

I use the [peeron] calculator.

Geohashing might be the ultimate "Nerd Snipe".

My user name is a play on words based on computer source-code and is a tribute to controlled folly.

I enjoy computer programming and wrote an implementation of Conway's Game of Life in BASIC in 1972. The virtual creatures were printed on a paper roll by a mechanical teletype. Those were the days!

Later in 1976 I taught programming to school kids. We used Algol! We filled in coding forms and submitted them to be punched onto cards for the overnight run. The next day we'd get the error message print-outs or rarely a successful run.

More recently I have used HTML, DOM, PHP, MySQL, Javascript and Delphi.

One of my follies is to go geohashing. A totally pointless but pleasing activity. Another is to walk from Cape St Vincent (Portugal) to Istanbul (Turkey). 1600 miles completed by the summer of 2010 with about 5400 miles to go. I'm not seriously expecting to complete this walk but that is all part of the folly. Walk Blog and Photo Gallery

My Geohashes

I have expeditions in ...

2010-08-27 52 1 - Under a big tree beside a sheep field, just off the narrow lane near Elsing, East Dereham.

2010-08-17 52 1 - A nettle patch behind the sand dunes at Winterton on Sea. There is a GPS path on WikiLoc.

2010-08-13 52 1 - A very short midnight walk. The aim was to watch the Perseid meteor storm. Neil spotted several trails. Logged at WikiLoc.

2010-08-11 52 1 - A five mile walk including the haspoint and a nice visit to the historic village of Laxfield. Logged at WikiLoc.

2010-08-10 51 0 - A six mile walk including the haspoint and fine views over the River Crouch valley. Logged at WikiLoc.

2010-08-07 52 0 - At 4pm on Saturday 7th August 2010, I visited the co-ordinates of the day in the Cambridge UK graticule. No one else was there. This was my first ever geohash. It was an easy one, right beside a bridle path. Logged at WikiLoc.
