Although it was rather close, only about 20 km one way by bike on a fast and easy trail, I had already dropped any plans to visit this hash - if I had been going during the day, it would have been in some hurry, and I didn't expect anything special there. And since it was the 100th hash I'd try, I wanted this one to be at least a little bit special.
However, when I came home in the evening, and saw that the hash for the next day was just 3 km down the road from this one, I changed my plans. I had never done a midnight double so far, and something else was new as well: I had a decent light now.
So, I finally started with dusk, and went out along the Neckar valley trail, out into the shadows of the night, waving goodbye to the sun and greeting the moon when it peeked out over the hills. As it got darker, the usually well used trail got empty. When the last ray of daylight had vanished, I had reached hash village and, after a short break in the centre, climbed up the hills to go for the hash itself.
Nothing really tried to spoil me there, except of a strawberry plantation where the owners obviously didn't want anyone to pass. So I didn't even try to find whether the path through it would lead to the hash but instead found a way around. Parked the bike at the forest margin, found that that forest was a rather light one, so it was - apart from the usual GPS dance - easy to find the hash even during nighttime.
At the forest margin a sign informed people about prehistorical sites. I tried to guess which way would lead me there, and went into the forest, but it didn't seem very much like I had hit the right one. At least the way got significantly worse soon, also my map didn't agree with its existance, so I decided that in the dark it would probably better to not take any risks, and choose another way which would lead me out of the forest and back to the main road quite soon. This resulted in a rather puzzled group of drinkers at a local beergarden who hadn't quite expected to see a bicyclist coming out of the forest at that point at a quarter past eleven.
Since I was neither interested in their puzzles nor their beer, I just left them and went back to the main road which would bring me to the neighbouring village of Riederich, where the story continues in the next report..
