Hi. I'm a student studying maths in Cambridge and living in Milton Keynes outside of term time. I mostly walk to hashes, but I'll also take public transport if it's convenient.

Expeditions
(most recent first)
- 2024-07-05 52 -0 - I follow a canal towards Cosgrove.
- 2023-10-19 52 0 - I visited a hash in a racehorse training field near Newmarket.
- 2023-06-09 52 0 - I walked to Jesus Green in the morning before an exam.
- 2023-05-21 52 1 - I travelled to Berney Arms to celebrate Geohashing Day, and missed my train home.
- 2022-12-09 52 0 - I attempted to do a 32 minute walk each way with some time to stop at the hash, in 1:02. Surprisingly, time constraints weren't what went wrong.
- 2022-10-17 51 0 - I took the train down to Newport, and climbed a tree by the hash.
- 2022-09-09 52 -0 - I walked to Campbell Park, then flew a kite there.
- 2022-01-25 52 0 - I spent 8 hours walking 41km to and from a field.
- 2022-01-21 52 0 - I walked to a farmer's field near Stow cum Quy.
Achievements
(oldest first)
|
I achieved level 2 of the Minesweeper Geohash achievement
- by visiting coordinates in 52,0 and 2 of the surrounding graticules.
|
|
Is it true that I earned the Juggernaut achievement?
- In principle, yes.
But I don't think it should count, because I wasn't trying for it. Also it was only just within the required deviation even when moving the start point for convenience. (2022-10-17 51 0).

I achieved level 3 of the Minesweeper Geohash achievement
- by visiting coordinates in 52,0 and 3 of the surrounding graticules.

|
Is it true that I earned the Speedrun achievement?
- In principle, yes.
But I did not have the foresight to time the expedition, particularly because the achievement didn't yet exist and I was in a rush. As such, the only method I have for determining the precise timing of the expedition is through the tracklog, which didn't start for the first ~6 minutes. The fairest approximation I can give for the time from leaving to re-entering my room is 1:00:06 (see calculations on expedition page), which would definitely give a sub-1 hour time from leaving to reentering the building. Utterly Ridiculous Things That I'd Like To See Happen
- Walk XKCD-100 - Assuming a walking speed of 5km/h, it would take about 32 hours to walk the required 100 miles. Hence it's only possible if the Friday is a Dow holiday, and even then still very difficult to near-impossible depending on your location on the planet. I think it would still count for the achievement if you set out before the hash was announced, as long as the sole purpose of your trip is geohashing. This makes it slightly more manageable, but it would still be a big commitment to start walking and hope that a hash works out for you.
- Multiple Time-Traveller - By this I mean reaching strictly more than 2 hashes on the same date at the same local time. This could happen at the same real time at (0,0), (0,-30), (180,0), or (-180,0). ((0,180) can have 4 hashes at the same real time but not the same local time.) Otherwise, the most doable option is probably a combination DST and time zone border time travel.
- Juggernaut Tron - (With Juggernaut both ways) With the exception of doing a complete circumnavigation, the only way to get this would be to find two disjoint routes that stay within the required 1/20th of the distance to the hash of the straight line to it. This is probably doable for relatively short distances on foot in places with freedom to roam, and for much longer distances by car in places with dense enough roads.
