Location

The side of the highway between Lamy and Galisteo, where the road diverges from the tracks. Actually, on land just over the fence from the right-of-way, but luckily close enough that we got within acceptable range (margin-of-error;I think) to not have to take a No Trespassing Geohash.

Plans

So having stayed up all night planning for a computer science competition, the core members of Team R0073R decided while we were all together and had a car and some time we should attempt our first hash, particularly because we noticed it fell somewhat close to Arlo's house that day. It was about noon when we left because we all had to catch some sleep in the morning (except Arlo, who ended up staying awake 25 hours straight against the advice of the E2 catbox chatters and with the help of some tea).

Expedition

So heading out from Willie's house in Rio En Medio, we passed through town, stopping to pick up some refreshments (pizza and slushies, from a Sam's Club [which Arlo broke down and entered, but only for the sake of the hash]), a GPS, and R0073R Associate Emma. That took a while. Then we drove to Arlo's house in Lamy and parked in the driveway for quite a while trying to figure out how to figure out where the hash was. It involved converting from DMS to decimal coordinates without Internet access (surprisingly hard; it is a ~base-60 to base-10 conversion after all), and for Erik, wandering around the railyard. When we finally left, it was evening, and when we found the hash it was getting dark. So we took a group picture, a picture of the GPS, a picture of us flying a kite (with much running) and drinking the slushies, and Arlo attempted to make a panorama but instead accidentally took video. Then everyone went home and slept.

I [Arlo] will put salient photos here as soon as I get them from Willie (now I have my own camera, so next hash I will be prepared!).

(edit: the pictures are likely long gone, and the other camera has broken. Nothing lasts forever in life.)

Is it true that user:Arlo, user:Snippy, user:Trigition, Erik, and Max earned the GeoSquishy?

In principle, yes.
But vendor was 32 km from hash, not 5 or less (2012-01-15 35 -105).
