After failing for 2014-10-11 49 8 at the service station Taunusblick I immediately started for München. Again I had to wait looong times for lifts. I made it to the service station Gruibingen with five cars and I arrived there at 22:30. I waited until 23:30, and all drivers didn't want to bring me to München. Then I wanted to give up and to look for a place to sleep. A last car arrived at the service station. I asked the driver. The driver declined. And I stepped beside to ask my GPS for a place to sleep. While I stood there waiting for the answer, this driver walked to me and asked me, where I wanted to go. I told him about München. He wanted to bring me around there, but not into the city. So I accepted.

And he bombed down the motorway, always some 20 km/h faster than allowed, and with this speed through the fog banks. Sometimes he made short curves on the motorway. Then, behind München, he wanted to bring me to a S-Bahn station, but he didn`t find the way. At first he tried it along nightly country roads with fog on them. Then he tried an industrial area. After some minutes of straying in the fog he tried a route over the motorway, but I told him several times: Bring me to the first motorway exit of the inner side of the ring road. At least I told him: BRING ME... . I usually don't do this, but this night it was too bad. And I arrived at 1:23 a.m. at the eastern end of Feldkirchen, only 4.4 kms away from the hash. I walked through the village and found a place to sleep at a shelter on the playing grounds.

In the morning I made a visit to the village, then I walked to the hash. I arrived there at 10:30. Then I waited for my friends. At first Zb arrived on his bike, some minutes later arrived OtherJack. OtherJack brought me compliments from the geohashers of Wien. Then we walked to the hash. I got a shot of one meter. Afterwards we walked around the quarter and Zb showed us some parts of the former airport. Then we said goodbye.

Zb decided that it has been a really long time since his last geohash, so when he got an e-Mail from the wiki telling him that München's page was modified and a meeting was scheduled for a spot that was almost in his neighborhood, he decided he wanted to go. His 10-month-old son had just recovered from a cold, so he didn't drag along his family and went alone. It was less than half an hour on the bike in very beautiful weather. Couldn't be easier for a geohash with an international meet-up!

Plans

GeorgDerReisende wants to meet OtherJack. I can be there between 11 and 12 o'clock. Or tell me a time. At least 4 p.m. is possible.

The place is reachable by bus 190 to stop Paul-Henri-Spaak-Straße, the bus connects the station Riem (S2) with the underground at Messestadt-West (U2).

Hey Georg I would be happy to meet up as well! I think 11 or 12 should be fine, but not 100% sure yet... it depends when I arrive in München. If 11 or 12 doesn't work, 4pm should still work. I'll tell you as soon as I know. Any other München-hashers awake? -- OtherJack (talk) 13:14, 10 October 2014 (EDT)
I can't promise anything yet, but this one is really easy for me (just a short bike ride from home), so even though my family has guests in the afternoon, I might be able to drop by. It would be great if you could post the approximate time you get there. --Zb (talk) 13:38, 10 October 2014 (EDT)
OK, I just figured out that I will be arriving in München tomorrow evening (Saturday). So, anytime Sunday is fine with me. Should we say 11:30am, since that's exactly between 11 and 12? -- OtherJack (talk) 17:10, 10 October 2014 (EDT)
That is ok for me. --GeorgDerReisende
If I make it, 11:30 should be fine. But please don't count on me, I still can't promise... --Zb (talk) 04:53, 11 October 2014 (EDT)
OK, that's why I put ??'s after your name above... hope it works out! See you at 11:30 tomorrow Georg. -- OtherJack (talk) 05:03, 11 October 2014 (EDT)

I will be a bit late, sorry. Now on u2 at kolumbusplatz. -- OtherJack (talk) 05:06, 12 October 2014 (EDT)

Expedition

In Short

Success! GeorgDerReisende, OtherJack and Zb met shortly before 11:30 across the street from the coordinates, and walked closer while GeorgDerReisende zeroed his GPS and OtherJack and Zb confirmed that the spot looked like what they had expected from the Satellite Map they had in remembered.

How Everyone Got Here

This still needs to be finished.

GeorgDerReisende

OtherJack had a much more difficult time reaching the hash than Zb, mostly due to his own negligence and ignorance. He'd only arrived in München the night before, and his lodging was right near the central train station so he had zero experience using local transport here (and also he doesn't read German.) He intended to budget lots of time in the morning for this reason, but overslept an hour and found himself racing out of the hostel without breakfast (or batteries for the GPS.)

Entering the station complex, he first tried to take the S2 (a surprisingly long walk from the entrance) only to realize once on the platform that it was terminating well short of the hash-station due to construction, and besides it was only running every 20 minutes (due to Sunday?) So it was time to walk all the way up and back to the U2 entrance.

Stopping at the ticket machine, he tried to buy two expensive three-zone tickets (another München transport misunderstanding, he actually only needed one-zone but was looking at the wrong zone-diagram.) After pressing a long series of buttons, the machine said he needed exact change, so he tried his American credit card. When this didn't work, it canceled his entire transaction. Starting over again, he then tried to count out exact change from his pocket, but when he didn't produce it fast enough, the machine killed the whole effort again. Finally, in frustration, he tried one more time with banknotes, resigned to losing a few euros -- and then it actually gave him change! Wtf.

So by this time he thought he was running quite late, which explains the last post there under Plans. However, the U-bahn was a lot faster than he'd expected, and he reached Messestadt West around 11:25. Not immediately seeing where to get the bus, he just started running toward the hashpoint. Once he realized how close it actually was, he finally relaxed. On reaching the hash road he crossed it first, but then saw Georg's distinctive presence on the other side, so re-crossed it and at long last met up with the Germans.

At The Coordinates

The coords were on the corner of a building that has remained from München's old airport and still carries the catalog number (23.1). The spot was at the SW corner of the building. When Zb got to the street corner close to the building, he saw GeorgDerReisende already waiting. They had just introduced themselves when OtherJack came along, too. Seems like geohashing is really all too easy...

After meeting, ...

Building 23.1 was obviously a left-over from the old airport, so we already had a theme and Zb offered to give GeorgDerReisende and OtherJack a tour of some other goodies that had survived the transformation of München-Riem's old airport into a trade fair, a huge residential area and a park. Together, the group walked along the old control tower, the oldest terminal building, now integrated into a business complex, and a neon sign ("Abflug"; German for "Departure") that used to be on a now-demolished terminal building and is now in the part where the taxiways or runway used to be.

The three spent about an hour together before everyone went their own way.

Zb went to revisit a piece of the old runway and took some more pictures there before riding home again.
