Revision as of 13:51, 28 September 2013

Welcome to Seattle

... once the most active graticule on our planet. It rains a lot here, but that doesn't deter our intrepid geohashers. Current expedition discussions at the top of the this page. Archived discussions on the past page.

Sept 28-29, 2013

Both Saturday and Sunday are quite accessible (on road shoulders or parkway strips) and close by! Saturday on Bainbridge Island and Sunday in Mountlake Terrace. Forecast looks wet though. So by default Saturday will only happen for me if there's a bikeable break in the weather (unless I can get a ride). Sunday's has a bus route close by, so will probably go for it regardless of weather, unless it's really coming down hard... -- OtherJack (talk) 15:56, 27 September 2013 (EDT)

I don't think I'll make it to Bainbridge on Saturday, but Sunday's point would be doable for me. Do we want to meet at 4pm? - AeroIllini (talk) 16:29, 27 September 2013 (EDT)
Sounds like a plan... -- OtherJack (talk) 20:48, 27 September 2013 (EDT)
Daughter has soccer at 2:30, so I should be there shortly after 4. --Thomcat (talk) 09:51, 28 September 2013 (EDT)

Sept 7, 2013

It's inside a Rite-Aid! In Tacoma, across from the community college. I'm thinking about going... anyone else? Sunday's is on someone's land in the woods out 522, would be harder. -- OtherJack (talk) 12:34, 6 September 2013 (EDT)

Aug 2-4

Two islands for our weekend, Friday and Sunday - the latter the more achievable, as it is quite near the bike trail. Saturday is on a street in the Broadview neighborhood, quite close to my house really. I'll be there at 4, and before that I'll be umpiring a men's league baseball game at Lower Woodland Park[1] from 12:30 to 3:00, if anyone wants to stop by. --Thomcat (talk) 09:48, 2 August 2013 (EDT)

Wish I could come to one or both of these, but I'm in 51,-0 this weekend, and traveling in Europe for the next month! I'm seriously looking at Sunday's here though... it's not that far from a tube station. -- OtherJack (talk) 17:49, 2 August 2013 (EDT)
Jealous - never been! Have a blast while there, and hopefully you can nab one of those both sides of the meridian hashes. --Thomcat (talk) 18:32, 2 August 2013 (EDT)
Alas nothing this weekend or Monday looks close enough to the meridian to be practical (I don't have access to a car here either.) I might still go to the Greenwich maritime museum that marks said meridian though... that would be still be a very cool activity for a geohasher... -- OtherJack (talk) 04:22, 3 August 2013 (EDT)

July 14, 2013

Saturday's is in the water, but Sunday's is in some woods in south Des Moines or north Federal Way. Might be private/fenced off, it's a little hard to tell. I'm thinking about going for it... probably 4pm if I do... -- OtherJack (talk) 13:57, 12 July 2013 (EDT)

Going for it. Will leave on the bus at 3:35 so probably won't get down there until well after 5pm. -- OtherJack (talk) 18:12, 14 July 2013 (EDT)

June 16

I might try to go for Sunday's on a vacant lot in White Center by bicycle around 4pm, followed by a visit to Zippy's Burgers which I've heard about but never investigated. I'll post to the Seattle main page if I'm actually going... -- OtherJack (talk) 23:23, 15 June 2013 (EDT)

I have to work three baseball games - noon, 2:30 and 5 - so it is unlikely I will be able to attend. --Thomcat (talk) 10:05, 16 June 2013 (EDT)

June 7-8

Two very achievable points for our weekend - Friday is just off a power-line access space on the Sammammish plateau; Saturday is on a fairway on the [North Shore Golf Course] in Tacoma. --Thomcat (talk) 10:01, 7 June 2013 (EDT)

Initial course research indicates this is the 8th hole. --Thomcat (talk) 10:01, 7 June 2013 (EDT)
I don't play golf so not exactly suited to me... not sure what the prospects are for just sneaking onto the course. And today I've got work / plans so can't get to Sammamish... -- OtherJack (talk) 14:47, 7 June 2013 (EDT)

June 1-2 2013

Saturday's is on someone's front lawn in north Bellevue... I'll probably try to make it at 4. Sunday's is in woods, possibly private property near the submarine base on the Kitsap... harder but also potentially doable. -- OtherJack (talk) 12:06, 31 May 2013 (EDT)

May 15 2013

Inside the Roosevelt Reservoir, which isn't far from my home base. Was under construction, but almost certainly no public access. Might make an expedition to there (and Spud!) at lunchtime to test the theory. --Thomcat (talk) 09:50, 15 May 2013 (EDT)

Definitely no public access... I know since that's my old neighborhood. Have fun at Spud though! -- OtherJack (talk) 14:16, 15 May 2013 (EDT)

Feb 23-24, 2013

Saturday's is in a train yard inside the Boeing factory near Everett! Anybody know someone who works there and could let geohashers in? Sunday's is just behind someone's back fence in south Bothell, and looks easily accessible - may go for it depending on weather / amount of energy... -- OtherJack 15:38, 22 February 2013 (EST)

Concur that Sunday looks quite easy to do, but I will be en route to Nürnberg at that time. I wish the Seattle area geohashers luck for the rest of February - see you in March! --Thomcat 15:45, 22 February 2013 (EST)
Cool - that looks to be near a lot of regular German geohashers, are you planning to try and meet some of them? Also, I think AeroIllini told me he worked at Boeing, so I'm going to send him a line... -- OtherJack 16:05, 22 February 2013 (EST)
Indeed I do work for Boeing! I don't think I could get any visitor badges on a Saturday, but I could be the ambassador to the site. Anyone else with a Boeing badge is welcome to join me. I'll post an alternate meetup point on peeron that non-Boeing folks can get to (outside the gate). --AeroIllini (talk) 12:36, 23 February 2013 (EST)
Sweet! What time of day are you thinking? -- OtherJack (talk) 12:43, 23 February 2013 (EST)
We could do the standard 4pm meetup, but I'd be open to a noon meetup, too. Also, what happened to the alternate meetup location feature on peeron? It doesn't seem to be there anymore. In any case, the parking lot just south of the point is outside the gate, and accessible by non-Boeing folks. We would meet there, and then I (and any other Boeing folks with us) would drive around to the gate to get inside the fence and stand on the point. --AeroIllini (talk) 12:47, 23 February 2013 (EST)
Sounds good either way, though if it's at noon a ride would be nice since I'd really have to hurry on a bike and the weather up there will probably still be rainy. Let me know when you decide on. I don't know what happened to the Peeron alternate thing either... -- OtherJack (talk) 12:58, 23 February 2013 (EST)
Let's go for the noon. I can give you a ride, no problem. Just email me your address. --13:09, 23 February 2013 (EST)

Feb 2-3, 2013

Nice weather finally. Saturday's one graticule east is in a field north of Enumclaw, reachable but it would be a haul. Sunday's in this graticule, however, is ON THE SAME LOT as my failure on 2010-06-12 47 -122. No more than 100 yards away. How weird is that? I'm strongly tempted to return, with jeans and a coat this time, and show those nettles who's boss. Will have to remember exactly where to find that trail though... -- OtherJack 16:11, 1 February 2013 (EST)

After reading your expedition report... I'd rather watch the Superbowl. --Thomcat 16:03, 2 February 2013 (EST)
I really don't think it would be that bad with jeans and a real shirt... if I remember right the trail continued in the direction of Sunday's hashpoint after passing near the original point. And I don't really care about this year's super bowl anyway... -- OtherJack 16:36, 2 February 2013 (EST)
AND it's winter which makes the nettles less threatening... -- OtherJack 16:43, 2 February 2013 (EST)
Unfortunately there were just too many other things to do today. Still rode, but just to Alki. -- OtherJack 00:26, 4 February 2013 (EST)

Monday, Jan 28 2013

Too bad today's wasn't on a nice day in summer! -- OtherJack 23:30, 28 January 2013 (EST)

Sunday, Jan 20, 2013

is in a wooded lot near Covington. I might try for it depending on other plans. Monday (MLK day) is on the base here, but in a scenic-looking Whidbey Island location one graticule north. (Fri-Sat are both in the water.) -- OtherJack 18:27, 18 January 2013 (EST)

Outside of Covington (160th is the line) - probably Lake Morton-Berrydale, or possibly unincorporated King County. Here's the property on Zillow - sold just 6 months ago. [2]. Good luck! --Thomcat 11:18, 19 January 2013 (EST)
Ended up seeing a play on Sunday afternoon, and doing some home improvement Monday... so no stories, sorry. I'll continue to be on the lookout as usual. -- OtherJack 00:53, 23 January 2013 (EST)

Jan 5-6, 2013

Saturday looks rainy with relatively inaccessible points in both Seattle (Olympic Peninsula beach) and Snoqualmie (Cascade foothill forest), though the latter might be doable in theory with bus->mountain bike->bushwack. Sunday looks less rainy and the Seattle point is in someone's back yard in Shorewood. Will probably try to go for the ambassador achievement there... -- OtherJack 16:23, 4 January 2013 (EST)

Dec 24-25

Peninsular Forest and the edge of the military base - might be outside, but might be inside; a fence is visible in the aerial photo. Merry Christmas geohashers! --Thomcat 10:46, 24 December 2012 (EST)

Dec 21-23

Peninsular Backyard, Peninsular Forest, and Puget Sound (on the way to the Peninsula). Saturday's edge status will make it easy to geohash one graticule east (appears to be a power lines right-of-way) or south (a triangular field between the freeway and the north-south rail corridor). Happy Holidays! --Thomcat 09:51, 21 December 2012 (EST)

If the weather's looking OK I might try to bike to Saturday-one-graticule-east. Forecast is showery so it doesn't look great as of now though... -- OtherJack 16:52, 21 December 2012 (EST)

100th Success

GECO has us at 98 expedition successes (131 expeditions). NWoodruff and the Most active graticules page has us at 99 expedition successes (143 expeditions), which I believe to be accurate (pending recount). So our next Seattle graticule expedition could be our 100th success - who's in? --Thomcat 11:59, 18 December 2012 (EST)

In principle! Depends on where/when of course. -- OtherJack 15:25, 18 December 2012 (EST)
I knew OtherJack was in - I don't suppose you'd be interested in auditing the Seattle Expeditions? I think the missing April March 15th expedition is the difference between GECO and Most Active. --Thomcat 17:48, 18 December 2012 (EST)
Anyone else interested in a 100th geohash? Special end-of-the-world coordinates available on Friday, which covers the weekend in case of Mayan failure. --Thomcat 19:28, 18 December 2012 (EST)
Recount complete, hanging chad suitably thumped. Had a few photos to upload, and still have a few more, but wanted to get this report out. I checked 157 expeditions and found that the Seattle graticule has 100 successes, failed to reach the coordinates 35 times, planned 11 more expeditions, and explored alternate meetups 9 times. GECO is a little off, and it will take more work to track down how. --Thomcat 16:49, 19 December 2012 (EST)
Further correction, I had a mistake. Congrats to OtherJack for his not-so-Useless 100th success in the Seattle graticule. --Thomcat 16:56, 19 December 2012 (EST)
Well, that works! Little did I know. -- OtherJack 17:23, 19 December 2012 (EST)
Congrats to all of you on your level of activity and success! Thanks for holding up the Pacific Northwest banner when Vancouver and we are falling down on the job. Jiml 12:03, 22 December 2012 (EST)
Vancouver more so than you guys, I'd have to say -- what happened to them? -- OtherJack 16:04, 22 December 2012 (EST)

Oct 26-28

Friday is almost certainly in the back corner of the property at 3404 26th Pl in Puyallup. Saturday is the front of a house in Poulsbo, Sunday a property near Poulsbo - perhaps an outbuilding? Hard to say from the satellite photo. I'll be driving by the house in Puyallup tonight on my way to a buddy's house on South Hill. --Thomcat 09:43, 26 October 2012 (EDT)

Oct 20-21

Two Pierce County hashpoints - Saturday in some woods at the end of a cul de sac in Steilacoom, and Sunday inside someone's house south of Tacoma near Route 7. I could potentially do either... Saturday relatively late, around 6pm or later, but much more flexible time wise on Sunday. Post if you're interested in either... -- OtherJack 15:34, 19 October 2012 (EDT)

Oct 12-14

Early hoping - committing my thoughts to electrons. Friday or Saturday should be either at the Evergreen State College or somewhere between Buckley and Bonney Lake. Sunday's hash point should clearly be on NE Pinewood Drive in East Bremerton. Regardless of where they are, it's time for a Seattle Rain Geohash this weekend. --Thomcat 14:54, 11 October 2012 (EDT)

Okay, here's what we actually got. A "birds eye" from the East shows Friday's point to be on the shore of a pond south of Pacific Lutheran. Saturday is near the top of a ridge on the Olympic Peninsula, and neighboring graticules also look inaccessible. Sunday is likely on private property in Skyway. --Thomcat 09:55, 12 October 2012 (EDT)
I thought about trying to ambassador the Skyway one today, but ended up being productive at home instead. Next weekend maybe... -- OtherJack 23:53, 14 October 2012 (EDT)

Oct 5-7

Weekend hashpoints are in the woods, the forest, and the S'Klallam tribal forest - none I plan to strive for. Next weekend I will be headed to Oktoberfest in Leavenworth, and hopefully a nearby geohash or two. --Thomcat 09:59, 5 October 2012 (EDT)

Sept 28-30

Finishing the month out, today's hashpoint is reachable in Puyallup's South Hill. Saturday is in the forest and Sunday on the peninsula. Saturday alternate meetup proposal - Bite of Broadview 4pm.

Why not - I'll see you there, unless I say otherwise later. Sunday looks like it would be an interesting ride, and potentially reachable, but a late Saturday night means I may not be up for it... -- OtherJack 14:45, 28 September 2012 (EDT)

Sept 21-23

A happy Solstice to all! Friday is in the military base, Saturday on the peninsula, and Sunday in deep forest. We knew our luck couldn't hold out forever... --Thomcat 09:42, 21 September 2012 (EDT)

Actually, Sunday's one graticule north, which is closer than "our" point, is smack in the middle of Lake Stevens (the lake). Earlier today I tried to see if anyone rented boats there, but the internet + calling a few people made it clear that they don't. Oh well. I also could have biked to today's (Sat) but decided to stay home and do other stuff. -- OtherJack 02:41, 23 September 2012 (EDT)

Sept 19

I choose today *not* to drive to Bothell for work, and this happens. Ignore an accessible geohash in this graticule at your peril, I say, though I'm not sure when I could go. Taking time off work *does* seem to be a piratey thing to do though... --Thomcat 10:03, 19 September 2012 (EDT)

Sept 17

Surprisingly easy geohash spot today; I can and will meet anyone who would like to this afternoon, as I have a flexible schedule. --Thomcat 13:14, 17 September 2012 (EDT)

At a retreat on San Juan Island for the next 24 hours or so, so I won't make it. Local hashpoints are all on the mainland or in the water today... -- OtherJack 15:13, 17 September 2012 (EDT)

September 14-16

Friday is south of Buckley, and Sunday is in the middle of Stickney Lake in Everett (though there is a boat launch). Saturday is down in Kent, and I am mounting an expedition -- 2012-09-15 47 -122‎ -- and then continuing south to a friends house for a strategy game night. Yee-haw! --Thomcat 09:42, 14 September 2012 (EDT)

A great success, bringing the Graticule total to 90 coordinates reached out of 130 expeditions attempted. Just 10 more successes this year to bring our graticule to 100! --Thomcat 11:34, 16 September 2012 (EDT)

September 7-9

Up a mountain on the peninsula, likely private property on the peninsula, or likely private property in Tacoma. Take your pick - none are particularly exciting. Saturday's geohash one graticule east is just south of Index and basically right on Highway 2, and two graticules south the geohash is just across the river from Battleground, near what looks like a Christmas Tree farm. I'm up for an alternate meetup if you've got some ideas. Cheers! --Thomcat 10:12, 7 September 2012 (EDT)

Sunday's south of Tacoma is actually right on the fence line of a large apartment complex... that shouldn't be that hard! We could be anyone. And even if it's on the other side of the fence, that appears to be a driveway, not someone's backyard or anything. I think this is doable, and if I'm feeling up to it I'll bike down there, and take the 578 back. Time TBA/flexible... -- OtherJack 14:30, 7 September 2012 (EDT)
Excellent idea, but I've got a pair of baseball games to run. Go get it, tiger! --Thomcat 10:04, 8 September 2012 (EDT)

August 31, September 1-3 (Labor Day Weekend)

  • Friday: In a backyard outside of Gig Harbor
  • Saturday: In the middle of Elliot Bay
  • Sunday: Deep in Forest Service territory south of Discovery Bay
  • Monday: A residential road inside Lewis-McChord Joint Base

Does anybody have access to Lewis-McChord? Monday's point is right in the middle of the road, but it's beyond the guard shack. Military ID, Civilian contractor ID, or visitor's passes are required. --AeroIllini 14:28, 31 August 2012 (EDT)

August 24-26

Friday is on a forested hillside on the peninsula; Sunday a backyard near Bonney Lake. Saturday is potentially reachable, and I have proposed an alternate location a mere 300m away, then we walk to the point for an attempt. Games this time? What say you all? --Thomcat 10:11, 24 August 2012 (EDT)

Unfortuantely team p4r4digm is out of the game this weekend. Prior engagement has me tied up through monday. Attain some epic spots for me! Hope your california trip was awesome :D - P4r4digm 12:51, 24 August 2012 (EDT)
I'll bike down on Saturday - shall we meet at the alternate at 4pm? Or when exactly? Can't stay for games though, as this will be a break from packing for a Sunday move! -- OtherJack 14:12, 24 August 2012 (EDT)
Sunday out for me also - leaving town. Meet at 4pm sharp sounds good, right by the softball field (as indicated on the alternate). --Thomcat 14:57, 24 August 2012 (EDT)
Sounds like a plan -- OtherJack 15:05, 24 August 2012 (EDT)
I'll do my best to be there at 4pm, but may have to end up going later depending on my schedule. I will, of course, bring games. --AeroIllini 15:09, 24 August 2012 (EDT)
I'm fine to reschedule to later, if you want to change it -- OtherJack 15:32, 24 August 2012 (EDT)
4pm is looking good. Let's keep it then. Is the alternate location posted somewhere? Saturday's meetup doesn't have an expedition page yet. --AeroIllini 20:45, 24 August 2012 (EDT)
Click on the peeron link (for Saturday) on the seattle page, it's the blue marker. I'll get around to making an expedition page sometime if one of you hasn't done it yet... -- OtherJack 20:49, 24 August 2012 (EDT)
Ahh, I see it, thanks. I usually go straight to Google Maps, so I didn't think to check Peeron. --AeroIllini 20:57, 24 August 2012 (EDT)
Late cancel - can't make it today. --Thomcat 18:26, 25 August 2012 (EDT)

August 17-19

Friday is just off the coast of the peninsula - perhaps swimmable, if anyone is over there. Saturday is on the back porch of 4467 141st Ave SE Bellevue, and would require an ambassador to visit this rather nice home. 4pm anyone? What is that star-trek shaped house NW of this one?!? Sunday is towards the edge of a farmer's field just south of Flaming Geyser State Park, which isn't quite as cool as it sounds. --Thomcat 10:08, 17 August 2012 (EDT)

I soooo want to try the beach one near silverdale but have to work and would run into the same issue of nightfall as I did on Whidbey :( Saturday's sounds fun and awesome! Who knows, maybe we convince the residents the start hashing and they get closer than anyone's ever gotten for the couch potato! I'll talk to the people who were interested of coming along saturday and try to figure out what time works for everyone. May skip on sunday just to chill :P --P4r4digm 10:12, 17 August 2012 (EDT)
From my research (which may no longer be accurate) that Bellevue house is the property of a Richard Haase[1], a retired republican[2] whose wife, Marie, is an assistant librarian at Forest Ridge School[3]. Semi-elderly school librarian? I have a feeling they'd go for a cordial visit from the internet :) --P4r4digm 10:39, 17 August 2012 (EDT)
I just created the meetup page 2012-08-18 47 -122 for Saturday's point. I plan on being there (I stated the standard 4:30 time, but I can be flexible). I would be more comfortable being Official Internet Ambassador to the good Mr. and Mrs. Haase if there were more people than just me present. Would it still count as a successful hash if we only made it to the street in front of the house? ---AeroIllini 14:57, 17 August 2012 (EDT)
Awesome! I got 2 friends I'm dragging along and it sounds like Thomcat is on board as well. Suggestion for better chances of success: Wear semi nice clothes and be respectful! I think we'll plan to be there around 4 and hangout till everyone arrives. And there's an Applebee's not far from there over in Factoria if anyone wants to get dinner after :D -- P4r4digm 15:02, 17 August 2012 (EDT)

August 16

Really easy meetup location today, in a street in Wallingford! Thomcat already went this morning but we will try to re-converge this afternoon or evening. See the page 2012-08-16 47 -122 for planning... -- OtherJack 12:51, 16 August 2012 (EDT)

Was nice meeting you guys :) --P4r4digm 10:13, 17 August 2012 (EDT)
Good to meet you as well! -- OtherJack 13:33, 17 August 2012 (EDT)

August 3-5

Saturday is in the drink and Sunday is on the base, so that leaves today's spot (next to a private lake just north of 12715 Old Snohomish Monroe Rd) or an alternate meetup on Saturday. Open to alternate suggestions here - just want to attend my 10th Saturday meetup. Anyone? --Thomcat 11:16, 3 August 2012 (EDT)

Saturday's Snoqualmie point looks interesting, in the mountains but only about 2 miles (crow flies) up a valley from a forest service road. I was thinking of going to look at some hiking maps to see if there's a trail up that valley (or do you know yourself whether there is?) If you're feeling less ambitious / have less time, we could meet at the spring in Licton Springs Park, 9536 Ashworth Ave N... I've always meant to check it out sometime... -- OtherJack 13:05, 3 August 2012 (EDT)

Licton Springs is good, 4:00pm. We will be meeting here to try and find this feature. I'll add an expedition page later today. --Thomcat 16:36, 3 August 2012 (EDT)
Sweet, I'll be there at 4. Also, good job using two different realizations of the word "geohash" at one go... -- OtherJack 16:56, 3 August 2012 (EDT)
