the question was: I'm not sure, do I qualify for the Maker and/or Air Geohash Achievement with this expedition? (My GPS reached the coordinates while flying in an aircraft I largely built myself...)
As a fellow RC pilot, I'm curious about the validity of the Maker/Air Achievements, as well. This would also allow some of us to reach water geohashes when we don't have ready access to a portable boat. Alternatively, perhaps a "Hash By Proxy" Achievement should be created, as in "My GPS reached the hashpoint under my control while I was nearby." We could also just do an RC Vehicle Achievement, though the Proxy one might lend itself to interesting Rube Goldberg devices. Thoughts? --Pardey 01:53, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hey, a more general "Rube Goldberg Geohash Achievement" could be created, for reaching the hash in an unnecessarily indirect and complicated manner :) It would certainly apply here. --Dawidi 18:25, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
Re-reading the Maker and Air Achievement pages, they both are clearly geared toward the Geohasher reaching the point, and including RC vehicles would undermine the exclusivity of those achievements. Thoughts on the other proposals, though? --Pardey 02:01, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
- RC Geohash sounds nice. That could include remote controlled devices, or even people. (I told my gf to meet me at these coordinates, and never showed up. Yay! Achievement!). -- Relet 09:21, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
- Air achievement includes reaching the geohash by kite. Perhaps kite should be separated out and put with RC vehicle for a new award, making arriving at the geohash in an airborne vehicle a different achievement than getting your GPS there without you. I was already thinking of a by proxy award for when you persuade someone else to go and get a picture of your GPS or the area, because you are not allowed into the area, but they are. I almost got one of these on August 31st, I believe.
- I agree. As another example, what if I flew my plane (with GPS) over a water hash, but didn't reach the hash myself? That was more what I had in mind for the "by proxy" achievement, because I was neither in the air (so not qualifying for an air hash) or on the water (so not qualifying for a water hash) in person, and while I did not reach the hash myself, I controlled the manner in which my GPS did so. I would probably also require that the geohasher be as close as realistically possible to qualify for a hash-by-proxy. --Pardey 19:14, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
And I would vote yes, to your qualifying for airhash (as it stands now) and maker (as soon as you document the construction of the model). -Robyn 18:55, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
- I would really suggest to create a new achievement for RC. The Air geohash achievement clearly says that the pilot has to be in the vehicle. (It also mentions kites, but then it does not say that you're allowed to stay on the ground, does it.. :D ) And having an extra achievement for RC encourages to have some cool remote controlled land or water geohashes, too! -- Relet 19:40, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks Robyn, but I guess the point is valid that the Air Achievement should be more exclusive. The prospect had originally encouraged me to try it, but if a RC, or By Proxy, or RG Achievement is "in the making" I guess it's good enough to have inspired that one. I'd hate to appear to be trying to collect achievements for cheap ;) As for Maker, the documentation currently is in MSWord format (yes, it can be used as a very basic CAD app), I'll put it on my website when I'm remotely satisfied with it. --Dawidi 21:51, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
- Relet's idea is better, anyway, the more different possible achievements the better. I guess I'm just feeling guilty that my employer sends me airhashing on a regular basis, while to many airhashing is an unattainable achievement. I couldn't manage a RC airplane, but perhaps I can get a boat or car. -Robyn 02:59, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
