Spam users
Do you as an admin have the ability to change the name of a category without having to change it on every page?

Please put all spam usernames/IPs here. Please do not create their userpage with the spam tag if it doesn't already exist. And please only add them if they have multiple edits -- most spam accounts are single use and never get touched again. --joannac 19:38, 21 November 2011 (EST)

I don't have IRC right now, but it seems the maps are broken again - eg. Berlin,_Germany does not show the Berlin graticule, and since it is >30W, it should always show some kind of geohash. The <30W templates also still show a blue square whenever the geohashes are not published yet. I know it's a code and a wiki thing, but maybe you can trigger whoever helped with the templates in the past. -- relet 08:21, 17 April 2012 (EDT) --

:For the record, that was apparently caused by the template "dow" returning an empty string for 2012|04|16, as seen on User:Crox/Test. It was solved when Zigdon fixed the value returned for that day. --Crox 14:20, 17 April 2012 (EDT)

More admins?
1. Thanks for the Achievements link change.

2. I've created a "What's New?" box and put it on the Main Page. It's been suggested that I put it on the Recent Changes page, but of course I can't do that. Koepfel says you can. What do you think?
+
Could I gently suggest asking if any of the well-regarded, trusted users would mind taking on admin privileges -- we've got over 50 items in the deletion category; it'd be nice to get that cleared out... I'm willing to volunteer, and have considerable experience being an admin at WP some years ago, but I don't know if I'm well known enough around here yet. ==Weird Quasi-Spam==
+
I am currently changing my username across internet - is it possible to do it also here? Bulwersator (talk) 15:30, 21 July 2014 (EDT)
I put a delete tag on a page called Developer. It was the third biggest page on the wiki, and appeared to be full of spam. There was a notice at the top of it that it was a research project, and gave a link to click on for more info.  It was a Brown University link, so I followed it.  It came up with a page saying "WARNING" and my IP address.  So I ditched that IP address.  I then chopped the back part of the link and went to graffiti.cs.brown.edu .  It looks like it's real, but it also looks like there's people not happy about it, and I think understandably so.  They say they won't delete it, but if we want to and scrub our logs, we can.  But part of their thing is that they want the spam to persist as long as possible. I looks fishy. I figure you know more about wiki'ing in general than I do, and you're a sysop, so enjoy.  :-)  --excellentdude 05:00, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
+
:Sure, let me know what you want it to change to, and I can do it. I'll be using the Renameuser extension; just check its effects are okay with you. --joannac (talk) 18:37, 21 July 2014 (EDT)
:According to their FAQ, it's a file sharing "network" - we're effectively hosting a chunk of a file for them (they say it's a Linux ISO, but it could also be illegal content for all we know). Maybe not spam in the traditional "advertising" sense, but definitely abuse. Page should be deleted - otherwise the content remains accessible through the history tab. (If that is indeed a research project, they don't want their content to remain there as long as possible, but just want to see how long it does - and thus, if file sharing through wiki spamming is viable long-term. Interesting approach, but still wrong.) --dawidi 05:23, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

::It leaves me wondering how useful having the wiki unprotected is.  Do we know what proportion of page edits are done by users who are not logged in? And once we ignore the few who would have signed in if they'd remembered to do so, what proportion of edits would be lost by making the wiki log-in-only?  I'd estimate it's quite smallAnd it would certainly make spam-removal a lot easier.  -- Benjw 12:18, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Names of Participants (if not users)

There exists a problem with participants' names, if the names contain special characters or spaces and the participants are not registered users.
Examples:
a) 2014-10-22_63_28 and 2014-10-22:
"Pastori's daughter" becomes "Pastori's"
b) 2014-10-05_48_7 and 2014-10-05:
"Q-Owla" becomes "q"
May be, you know someone at xkcd who could fix this bug?

Names are shown in full length, if one uses Pastori's or Q-Owla. But this looks strange (and red).

Hey, I didn't see anything in the actual expedition pages (all the names show collrectly), but I saw it on the date pages e.g. 2014-10-22. Is that the same thing you saw? If so, I think it's an aperfectbot parsing problem (since that's the thing that generates those pages). --joannac (talk) 18:09, 22 October 2014 (EDT)
Greetings, I am the friendly bot maintainer! I am the guy responsible for the robot that maintains the expedition list pages, and will happily answer your question. In the past (and maybe even still today) people would list themselves as a participant, and after that use a dash and write some comments. e.g.
 • APR - Met up after lunch
 • APR's friend - Came with APR
I will continue looking for a way to address that, but for now, unfortunately, that is going to remain. If you have any further questions or issues, please feel free to contact me directly on my user talk page. --aperfectring (talk) 21:18, 22 October 2014 (EDT)

Next deleting sessions

There are a lot of items in Category:Tagged_for_deletion. When will someone really delete all these things? Does this happen eg. monthly?--Q-Owl (talk) 04:32, 4 November 2015 (EST)

I used to do it manually, but got lax about it. Will do a batch now. --joannac (talk) 21:47, 7 November 2015 (EST)
Thank you!--Q-Owl (talk) 10:18, 9 November 2015 (EST)

Thumbnail creation has stopped

Since May 9th 2016 thumbnail creation has stopped. Special:NewFiles demonstrates the problem nicely. Any chance or working some of your magic? Thanks. --Sourcerer (talk) 09:46, 14 May 2016 (UTC)

Yea - working again. Was that you? Thanks anyway. --Sourcerer (talk) 00:26, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, that was me. I left you some messages in irc. It was a security issue http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/250519, and it took this long for the patch to be available in the stable packages. --joannac (talk) 00:47, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

HTTPS

Hi Joanna! There currently is a discussion about that this website should have an HTTPS certificate. It would be nice if you could install one, if you have the necessary rights. --Fippe (talk) 19:11, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Agreed!. Any site with a login should be on https these days. --Sourcerer (talk) 18:37, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
