The Australian Nomenclature Project
The Map
Acknowledgements
As with any huge project, there are a number of huge thankyous that need to go out to various people for their valuable parts in the development.
Firstly, to Thomcat, who developed what I believe to be the first map of this format for Washington. Also to Robyn, whose map of British Columbia I mercilessly plagiarised to produce the monster you see before you. Without such pioneering steps of creativity projects like this one just don’t happen.
Secondly, to CJ, for initially encouraging me to go ahead with the project and for numerous cosmetic changes to make the whole thing a lot prettier and user-friendly. I hope I haven’t stepped on his toes (too much) when it comes to the naming of NSW graticules.
Thirdly, to Joannac for her (apparent) enthusiasm for the whole project, for repeatedly answering my pleas for help when my meager internet-osity let me down, for the lovely borders for the regional hash areas and for generally being a helpful sort. She’s not such a bad type, considering she comes from Victoria and all. Sorry again about the Canberra graticule, kid.
Last, but by no means least, thanks to the people who live in the graticule of Hat Head and other amusingly named places. I may have an odd sense of humour, but without these occasional flashes of amusement I would have gone mad(der).
Graticule Naming
This map was compiled using the 1977 ‘Reader’s Digest Atlas of Australia’ which is split conveniently into graticules (6 to a page, if you’re interested). Unfortunately, it was published quite a time ago, and as such it doesn’t include more recent developments, particularly the growth of tourism since the 80’s. Thus all graticules are named according to their appearance in 1977, and the major settlements of many areas will probably have changed. If you feel the need to rename your local graticule or any other graticule that I have transcribed incorrectly (it must have happened quite a few times), that’s ok with me, just make sure you update the links in all the respective neighbouring graticule templates etc.
Another problem with using an atlas from the 1970’s is that they were considerably less culturally sensitive times. As such, many regions are not recognised as they would now be with respect to the various indigenous peoples of Australia. I mean no harm by my naïve naming of respective graticules, and I have no issues with any edits people feel the need to perform in the interests of cultural sensitivity.
I would have liked to have used Robyn’s excellent naming system, but the project was well under way when I discovered it, and I decided to use the one system throughout the continent. As such I have devised a system whereby each graticule is named after whichever (in order of priority):
- A city
- A town
- A post office
- A railway station
- A historical building
- A homestead or property
- A mountain/hill/range of identified height
- A mountain/hill/range of unknown height
- A lake or body of water
- An island/point or peninsula
- A watercourse
- A junction
- A road
Each category is sorted by population (as indicated by the atlas) (for cities, towns and stations etc.), area (for lakes, islands, cities etc.) or height (for mountains etc.). If no landmark can be considered greatest by this method, I have used the one occurring first alphabetically.
- There are a few exceptions to this rule, where absolutely nothing in the graticule could be identified, I’ve just used something else as struck my fancy, see if you can work out where. From memory, there are 3 or 4.
Notes
Oh, and there might as well be a competition to find all the little spelling, typing and transcription errors, for all you librarian types out there, but I’m not going to be giving prizes.
