I'm Roald88 (she/they/he). I first learned about geohashing sometime in 2023 or so, via XKCD. I only just started actually going to hashes this month (as of writing this, January 2025), and am no longer limiting myself to hashes in walking distance from my house (convincing people to drive me places is going better than I thought). I'm in the Boston, Massachusetts graticule (42, -71). Generally, given where I live (right on the edge of the graticule) I can’t reach a lot of the hashes that are in my graticule - a 9 mile walk is about my limit, and that only gets me to Burlington or so. I have learned, from the amount of hashes I haven’t been able to get to because of this, that I need a kayak/canoe/boat/inflatable raft/floating thing that I can direct/floating thing that I ''might'' be able to direct. I have been told that it is a bad idea to try and improvise one, given that I cannot swim and have strong thalassophobia. Eventually, I’ll get around to putting a picture of myself up here, but that may take a bit.

Roald88 (Me!)

Hi!

Lol-asg.png 15 / None / 42,-71

I have learned, from the amount of hashes I haven’t been able to get to because of this, that I need a kayak/canoe/boat/inflatable raft/floating thing that I can direct/floating thing that I might be able to direct. I have been told that it is a bad idea to try and improvise one, given that I cannot swim and have strong thalassophobia. Eventually, I’ll get around to putting a picture of myself up here, but that may take a bit. If needed (due to the lack of picture) I can generally be identified by my large hat (as soon as I get it back from M/get another from Altair), purple coat (assuming it’s cold), and large amount of sweaters tied around my waist that I use purely for pocket space. From what I can tell, there aren’t any currently active geohashers in my graticule, though I may be wrong (please, correct me if I am).

I have a Hashscot (Rosy Maple Moth) who will come with me to hashes whenever I remember to bring them.

Geohashing (and non-geohashing) Goals

  • Unlock at least 9 graticules
  • Be the first, second, or third person to get the MacGyver Geohash Achievment (I don’t think anyone’s gotten it yet - could be wrong)
  • Actually meet another Geohasher who’s not someone I’ve convinced to start Geohashing
  • Geohash on all continents
  • Geohash in every state in the USA
  • Repair my iPad keyboard CORRECTLY
  • Get the Hobbit Geohash achievement using only food I’ve made (and if possible, a ring I’ve made by myself as well (this is mostly incentive for me to bake more))
  • Run an impromptu one-shot (any TTRPG) at a hashpoint
  • Get the Largest Geohash record (17+ people seems doable (I may try this at the next family reunion that I attend))

Hashes I've attempted

2025-01-11 42 -71 (First hash!) (I think the photos that I provided are sufficient evidence for a walk geohash)

2025-01-15 42 -71 (First Puppet Master hash!)

2025-01-17 42 -71 (First Drag-along hash!)

2025-01-29 42 -70(Failure, private property)

2025-01-29 42 -71 (Failure, unable to set out on expedition)

2025-01-30 42 -70 (Faliure, private property? Unsure, may attempt when night is not impending)

2025-02-01 42 -71 (Success, Frozen Geohash, Walking on Water)

2025-02-07 42 -70 (Faliure, thwarted by private property again)

2025-02-13 42 -71 (Success)

2025-02-23 42 -71 (Success, One With Nature)

2025-03-09 42 -70 (Success)
