As last year: meet in #geohashing at hash-o-clock and figure them out!

Vancouver's 2010 Geohashing Day expedition will be in the [[2010-05-21 49 -122|Surrey graticule]].

A multi-day hash would be awesome, since both geohashing day and mouse over day co-ordinates will be announced at the same time. It'll also make some points more accessible as we won't have to get there and back on the same day (except for those who work Saturday).

Does this mean I'm going to have to pre-pack again? I'll make sure to have the snowshoes and the inflatable-raft ready... Hmmm... I wonder how often those two words get used in the same sentence? -- [[user:thepiguy|<nowiki>[[user:thepiguy]]</nowiki>]] 07:12, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

===Alternate===

We should have an alternate all ready to go. My suggestion is "the best hash we missed this year." There must have been one somewhere that you looked at and said "if only it wasn't Wednesday/5 p.m./raining/freezing/laundry day/the day before my thesis defence" and regretted not getting to. We could go retrohash it.

:I was just thinking of alternates today. There's the inaugural-day point, which we held as an alternate last year but didn't visit, on a beach on Gabriola Island.

:On the 10th there was one in the tantalus range, halfway to lake lovely water, which is a provincial park campground... with cabins and everything. There's also the [[2009-07-18_49_-123|garibaldi expedition]] you planned then didn't do. -- [[User:Rhonda|Rhonda]] 02:20, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

::Of those two, the Garibaldi would be my preference. The Tantalus is on a very steep slope and of course all Tantalus range hashes require fording a difficult river. There's also the New Otherton hash on Anvil Island, but not everyone has a boat. -[[User:Robyn|Robyn]] 02:41, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

:::True enough; I want to get one in the Tantalus one day, but geohashing day may not be the best time to go for it :-) I would support Gabriola Island as an alternate, or Garibaldi if there is consensus that a cool retro that wasn't a geohashing day point will be appropriate. Gabriola Island has the benefit that there's more likely to be people we can try to share cake with, but the disadvantage that it requires two ferry rides to get to. -- [[User:Rhonda|Rhonda]] 04:58, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

:::There are a few of us who still have to work on Geohashing day, but would like to do an after-work meet.  Two ferries (or a long drive and a long hike) does sort of require one to commit the entire day.  --[[User:Wade|Wade]] 05:10, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

::::Gabriola could be reached before midnight, starting after work. 7pm ferry from horseshoe bay arrives in Nanaimo 8:35; 9:55 ferry arrives on Gabriola island 10:15. (I don't think we'd make the 8:55 sailing.) Garibaldi would make a good Saturday alternate because we'd have all day to get there, if people want a hike. -- [[User:Rhonda|Rhonda]] 13:50, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

===Preparations===

As thepiguy mentions below, some advance preparation is in order. Last year's [[Talk:2009-05-21_48_-123]] pretty much covers it, but someone should update the ferry times.

:While I did post a ferry schedule that would work for getting to Gabriola Island, we should keep in mind that this year, Geohashing Day is the ''Friday before May long weekend'' and as such everybody will be going every which way, immediately after work, and rush hour can start as early as noon. If Gabriola is the choice for Friday and we are bringing a car, whoever is driving will have to watch the ferry status and get there early to target the 7PM sailing. 2-sailing waits are not uncommon on this sort of Friday. The rest of the group can buy walk-on tickets closer to the sailing time and join the car at that point, if they can't get away early enough to ride to the terminal in the car. -- [[User:Rhonda|Rhonda]] 14:43, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Intended Participants

The following intended to participate and/or helped plan the graticule's official Geohashing Day celebration.

  • user:thepiguy has work on Friday but will let nothing else stand in his way.
  • Rhonda will try to get away from work early.
  • Robyn is expecting to be here and available.
  • yangman loves his flex-hour telecommute schedule.
  • Wade has an important, fun and valuable work event on that day, which he really should not miss. So if he calls in sick and shows up at a geohash instead of work, you won't tell, will you?
  • Xore also has an important, fun and valuable work event on that day. Will try to get out early, wouldn't tell if anyone called in sick. All the better if it rains?
  • srs0 hopes to be there. He has work, but may be able to leave early if necessary.
  • Elbie hopes to be there too, but has to be at work from 17-19.
  • Arbron is available and ready to hash.

Plans

Vancouver's 2010 Geohashing Day expedition will be in the Surrey graticule.

Mouseover Day will be celebrated in the Vancouver graticule.
