The Portland metro area graticule is at 45 N, 122 W. It completely encloses the city of Portland and some surrounding areas. The graticule is almost entirely land, much of it open and undeveloped, making this one of the best areas for geohashing.

For other places called Portland, go here.

Cities in this Graticule

  • Portland, OR
  • Vancouver, WA

Daily Locations

6/7/2008 - Saturday

Jessica: The location seems to be slightly less in the middle of nowhere than last weekend. But still, it's rather in the middle of nowhere. Once again, who's going? (and is the map correct this time?)

Zac: I was considering it. This isn't my home graticule, so I don't know the area that well. Also, I have nothing else to do.  :)

Jessica: Sweet! Possibly see you there. Either way, I think I've got a group of three or so together. If all goes well, we'll be heading out in half of an hour or so. Might be a little late (or absent if Larch Mountain Road turns out to be evil), but eh.

Zac: Almost made it. I got about halfway (It was about a 2 mile hike from the road) before I started to feel a little nauseous and light headed.  :( Did you end up making a go at it? How about tomorrow's?

6/2/2008 - Monday

Today's point is south of the intersection of SE 139th & Mill. This seems to be a residence in the Hazelwood District, 1833 SE 139th.

5/31/2008 - Saturday

It's on Sauvie Island and looks pretty accessible; i.e. right on the road.

It's in the SE corner of the graticule, east of and only slightly north of Salem. The reference implementation is wrong, so Saturday's location has to be manually entered into Google Maps. Or you can follow this link.

Jessica: Er, who is all going?

admalledd: I am unable to make it, too far away to bike... by maybe 50 miles?

Erin: I can't go, sorry guys! Take some pictures!

5/26/2008 - Monday

Erin: If anyone is interested, I'll most likely be at the Monday location. It appears to be near Walnut Grove, and it doesn't look too hard to get there. Hopefully I'll bring a small crowd with me, along with a picnic! I guess we'll stick to the XKCD Saturday meet time of around 4:00.

admalledd: I believe that me and a small group of people will also be going to Monday's location, we plan on biking, we might add to your picnic Erin by brining pringles!

Wil: I was there, as were eight others. There was a picnic and I got to play a game of chess.

Erin: Well, we almost got to the spot. Location was in a residential area. If only it hadn't been in someone's backyard. Pictures to come!

admalledd: Same as Erin, except she has all th pictures.

Erin: As soon as Kirsten sends me the pictures (I used her camara), I'll put them up.

TimmothyTee: Eric, if the hash on saturday is beyond an hour ride, then I probably won't go. Prom is saturday and I have a date starting around 6:30.

5/24/2008 - Saturday

  • Wait, don't you have to change the date to 2008-05-24? Then it changes to take place in the Molalla area. I might not make it to Saturday's, but how about Memorial Day's, in Vancouver?
  • You're right, I was mistaken about Saturday's location.
  • I might be down for Monday's location in Vancouver
  • Saturday's location is PERFECT! Who wants to go to a dumb old neighborhood. We get to go tresspassing in some farmer's field! WOO! We'll be there baby!
  • I only know of one place to check ownership of Portland-area land, and I don't know how to interpret the lack of ownership information there. -wil

5/23/08 - Friday

Lake Oswego neighborhood.

Too bad this would have been a better location for Saturday :(

Notable Dates

whenever they feel like being notable...notably August 17th

Participants

  • Alexp If anyone from Salem ever needs a lift to any of the Saturday Meet-ups let me know, I'll see what I can do.
  • Drache and NoTerminal will be hosting the first Saturday GeoHashing meetup for the Portland Graticule this week. Wherever it is, we'll be there with a chess board (or maybe two) and an arsenal of tech. If it's somewhere unreachable, we'll be as close as we can get. Look for a very dirty black VW Jetta or a silver Subaru Imprezza hatch-back with an over sized roof rack. There will be XKCD signs in the windows and our actual GPS coordinates on the dash if we're not at the specified ones. We'll also be on CB channel 36, family radio channel 13 with no codepage or codepage 0, and HAM radio frequency 146.52mhz, Callsign KC7KWX. Our CBs are car mounted so switch to ham or family when you're close to the location.
  • Wil See my user page or specific dates above for more information.
