January Local Hashpoints

Monday, Jan 11

According to the property lines in Google Maps, it looks to be in the right of way along Going St. in east Portland. My decision on whether to make the trek or not will completely depend on my perceived health at the end of the work day. --aperfectring

It's on or near the sidewalk! I'm taking Mrs.5000 out for dinner and an easy Expedition! Michael5000 21:50, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Saturday, Jan 9

The Portland has is near Sherwood again this weekend. This time it looks like it may be on the pavement of a street, and quite accessible. Assuming I don't wake up completely dead to the world tomorrow, I would be willing to go if others are planning the journey. --aperfectring 21:16, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

I'm game for it, but I'll bet you already guessed that. I might be coming from the FIRST Kickoff, which you might want to go to as well. Jiml 22:33, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Saturday, Jan 2

The Portland hash looks pretty accessible... Michael5000 21:17, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

Well, it looks like it will require permission to access the edge of the field, but it is probably worth a try. Did you want to come out and try? I should be back in town by then, if all goes well. Jiml 00:32, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
I'm feeling indecisive, and it's a ways for me -- it's going to depend on weather and mood for this one. Michael5000 16:06, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
Great news! We're now tied both for the most active and the successful graticule in the world!  :-) Jiml 17:12, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

Where to plan

With the User:AperfectBot picking up expedition pages, we should move planning to the expedition page as soon as it becomes clear someone might actually go!

Wil: Anyone know why August 17th is "notable?"

admalledd: No idea.

Unless someone can say why it needs to stay, I'm going to be deleting that section at some point. Also, I'll probably be cleaning up the Daily Locations section by moving all of the text below each date to the YYYY-MM-DD_45_-122 pages RSN. Wil 23:06, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the cleanup, Wil. Do you know who has the first geohash in this graticule? --Thomcat 15:11, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

Thomcat, Drache and NoTerminal had the first geohash in the world, and they had it in this graticule.  :) Wil 16:37, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

I completed my cleanup of the Portland page yesterday. The only thing I noticed that need help with is contacting Erin, who was at the 2008-05-26 geohash and who promised us pictures but never posted any. Wil 16:37, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Damn you all in Portland for having an active location. I am the only local to ever visit a Eugene location... It is hard to go when you know you will be the only one there. Grr.

It's a shame that none of the recent (and not-so-recent) expeditions have been written up so that the rest of us can enjoy reading about them. (Or did nobody actually go? Several people are listed as expressing interest.) Can I please encourage you all to write something -- anything! -- about your expeditions? Thanks. -- Benjw 17:59, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

I second Benjw's request. Make quickie expedition pages showing whether or not you reached the coordinates, just so that we an count you in the global statistics. -Robyn 17:17, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Winter meetup time

I propose that we, like many of our other fellow northern graticules, set an earlier default meetup time for the winter. I would suggest 2PM, from Oct. 1 through the March 15. This will be at least 2 hours before sunset for all dates, allowing some more ambitious wilderness geohashes to be attempted. --aperfectring 18:50, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

For me, that will only make a difference on weekends, as weekdays even 4PM is pretty much out of play. Sounds like a good plan. Jiml 00:22, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

December Local Hashpoints

Friday, December 04

This hashpoint is south of Hillsboro.

I'm guessing it's someone's backyard. Hard to say for sure with that many trees, but... Michael5000 22:23, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

It was someone's backyard, but they let me go down the hill and through the woods. Jiml 02:30, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

Well done! I'm too chicken to knock on doors for my geohashing... Michael5000 08:03, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

Sunday, December 06

Anyone for a pickup game? It looks to be on a school's baseball diamond in the infield grass. There doesn't seem to be a fence around the property, so it seems like a very reachable point. Off of Cornell, just north of sunset. --aperfectring 16:57, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

It's Sunset High School's field. It's an interesting Sunday -- Mt. St. Helens has a hash in a fairly major road, and Springfield has a hash right off of a road. Somebody travelling the I-5 Corridor could score an easy three-in-one-day. Michael5000 17:44, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
I'm thinking I might visit the Portland hash midday. Can't play ball, though -- I've got a pulled muscle that needs to be rested. : ( Michael5000 22:25, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

I've started an expedition page for planning purposes.Jiml 02:30, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

City picture

Hey Portland graticule residents! I took a couple pictures of the city while I was there, and was wondering if you would like to put one on your page, as some other graticules have done. I have two options: [1] and [2]. I would resize the image (since they are way too big for inclusion on a graticule page) and possibly crop it (if desired). Let me know if you are interested, or feel free to download either one and post it yourself! --aperfectring 00:37, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Cool! Thanks! I prefer the second one. I assume I'll be able to convince iPhoto to do some processing for us. Jiml 04:47, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
Just make sure they are really of Portland. Vancouver and Seattle know why I'm saying this. :-P -Robyn 06:44, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
I don't have to make sure of it. I didn't travel to Vancouver (BC or WA) or Seattle, and have never done so when I have had this camera. Since these pictures came off of my camera mere minutes before I posted them up here, I don't think I have to worry. =P Feel free to do whatever you want with either photo. --aperfectring 11:56, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
I added one of the pictures to the page. I cropped it down and then saved it with a smaller size. I'll see if someone can make it prettier. Jiml 00:22, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

November Local hashpoints

Sunday, November 15th

The Eugene, Oregon hashpoint seems supremely accessible. I am still pondering whether I feel like graticule hopping yet again, and getting my 3rd adjacent non-home graticule before getting the home graticule. Also, the Springfield, Oregon hashpoint looks to be about 500ft off of a nearby road, with something like 150ft of elevation gain over that distance. It would be a bit of a challenge, but might be fun if someone else wants to join me for the expedition. --aperfectring 00:16, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

  • Jim interested in going, since he has to go to Wilsonville anyway. He's less enthused about the additional 3 hours of driving all by himself. APR is considering, but drove a lot yesterday. Jiml 18:44, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
    • I'm not really feeling it today. The late night driving last night has left me in a lazing about the apartment kind of mood. --aperfectring 21:41, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Of course, "supremely accessible" is a relative term, given that Jim and APR would have to drive 2 hours to get to the road next to hashpoint! Jiml 22:30, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

Sunday, November 8th

2009-11-08 45 -122 -- Sunday's hash will be in West Vancouver and has a reasonable chance of being accessible. I've started an expedition page.

I also counted the date wrong and screwed up next Monday's page 2009-11-09 45 -122. It should be easy enough to fix if someone ends up doing a Monday expedition, though. Michael5000 18:52, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

I already marked it for deletion. I doubt JoannaC will delete it before Tuesday or so Jiml 00:22, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

November 1 McMinnville

This graticule hopping point appears to be in a county park. May actually be accessible, and it isn't too far away. Anyone interested?? Jiml 18:54, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Member List Tidying

Would it bug anybody if I alphabetized/standardized/updated the members list? I don't want to be the neat-freak newbie stepping on toes.... --michael5000, 2009-11-02

Sounds good. Want to maybe have an active/maybe inactive grouping to sort through them? Jiml 00:23, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
Vancouver B.C. has active members in bold and inactive not; I was thinking of following their lead. Michael5000 03:45, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
...and done.
Thank you! We may want to create an inactive section in a while. By the way, I moved the photo around, thanks to Sermoa's help Jiml 18:44, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

Graticule page cleanup

Since the archives are getting rather long, I suggest we break them off into their own page with a link from the graticule page. Any objections? --aperfectring 18:50, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

Sounds reasonable. I was thinking the same thing when was working on the photograph for the page. Jiml 00:22, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
Done! Archives should now be maintained here. --aperfectring 00:40, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
