Old talk has been moved to [[User_talk:Joannac/OldTalk]]
G'day Joannac, welcome to the Canberra group. [[User:Polysylabic_Pseudonym|Psud]] has setup a mailing list for Canberra geohashers to organize car pooling, be sure to join! http://millie.adamhelp.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/geohashing . There is also an IRC chatroom, #geohashing on irc.foonetic.net. Have fun :-) --[[User:Kieran|Kieran]] 00:47, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

I was editing *both* those pages to clean up, and you beat me to it. Huzzah!

==Freeway Geohash==

I've been cleaning up the achievements pages and made the Freeway Geohash go away because it seemed to be the same as the Speed racer achievement. But I see you've claimed both, so perhaps you see a difference. Would you like to defend it, or enlighten me? -[[User:Robyn|Robyn]] 22:39, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

:I see Speed Racer as "on a road, drive past at the speed limit" (so would apply on even tiny suburbia roads). Freeway hash means you have to be specifically on a freeway, and possibly stop in the breakdown lane to get a photo :) I don't care if it stays or not, I claimed it more because it was there. --[[User:Joannac|Joannac]] 22:55, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

::Fair enough. So Freeway Geohash is a subcategory of Speed Racer. I guess if you were in a traffic jam on a freeway, or operating a vehicles incapable of the speed limit, you could get Freeway without Speed Racer. maybe I'll put it back. Thanks -[[User:Robyn|Robyn]] 23:12, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

The Raptor and Picnic achievements have ribbons now, if you're interested.

I don't have IRC right now, but it seems the maps are broken again - eg. [[Berlin,_Germany]] does not show the Berlin graticule, and since it is >30W, it should always show some kind of geohash. The <30W templates also still show a blue square whenever the geohashes are not published yet. I know it's a code and a wiki thing, but maybe you can trigger whoever helped with the templates in the past. -- [[User:relet|relet]] 08:21, 17 April 2012 (EDT) --
 +
:For the record, that was apparently caused by the template "dow" returning an empty string for 2012|04|16, as seen on [[User:Crox/Test]]. It was solved when Zigdon fixed the value returned for that day. --[[User:Crox|Crox]] 14:20, 17 April 2012 (EDT)

== coordinates ==

Set $wgShowExceptionDetails = true; at the bottom of LocalSettings.php to show detailed debugging information.

Hi Joannac,

I uploaded a pic for Sat 12/20, used the coords of 32/111, but the location of Tucson, Az.  I think you 'corrected' the coordinates to 32/110.  The 32/111 WAS correct.  I said Tucson because it's where I live and the closest large city.  The boundary for 110/111 actually passes through the west side of town. I live on the 111 side and thats the quad we explored in.  It looks like it is called the Casa Grande quad on here.

I think that puts us (I have an adventure partner) as the first posters for that quad.  :)

We tried another spot today in that quad, but ran into "private property" signs and a gate across what we thought was a public road and ended up spinning tires in a sandy wash going around.  It took us an hour to get out while watching the sun go down, but we managed without too much trouble.  Didn't make it to the hash spot, but its more about the adventure than the destination.  We're even going to try another route that we found to get there.  Not because we were 'beaten', just because we're damn curious to see if the alternate route is open.

Thanks for you efforts in supporting this site.  It's a great incentive to do the random destination road trips that we love to do.

Coyote

Oh, right. I forgot to comment about this. I talked to the database admin guy. He's not that keen on installing new packages unless there's justfied reason for it. I said it would be a nice way of making users see expeditions they might not otherwise see, and letting newcomers see the coolness of past expeditions. He didn't seem too convinced. Just read your report from yesterday.  Good luck with the teeth. :-(  Hope you're feeling much better again soon!  -- [[User:Benjw|Benjw]] 17:04, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
+
There exists a problem with participants' names,
 +
if the names contain special characters or spaces and the participants are not registered users.
 +
<br />Examples:
 +
<br />a) [[2014-10-22]]_63_28 and [[2014-10-22]]:
 +
<br />"Pastori's daughter" becomes "Pastori's"
 +
<br />b) [[2014-10-05]]_48_7 and [[2014-10-05]]:
 +
<br />"Q-Owla" becomes "q"
 +
<br />May be, you know someone at xkcd who could fix this bug?

== Re: broken rediercts ==
+
Names are shown in full length, if one uses <nowiki>[[User:Pastori's|Pastori's]]</nowiki> or <nowiki>[[User:Q-Owla|Q-Owla]]</nowiki>. But this looks strange (and red).

Whoops, I was doing what I used to do for double-redirects. Thanks for restoring them -- [[User:Jevanyn|Jevanyn]]
+
:Hey, I didn't see anything in the actual expedition pages (all the names show collrectly), but I saw it on the date pages e.g. [[2014-10-22]]. Is that the same thing you saw? If so, I think it's an aperfectbot parsing problem (since that's the thing that generates those pages). --[[User:Joannac|joannac]] ([[User talk:Joannac|talk]]) 18:09, 22 October 2014 (EDT)

== Re: Quotes page ==
+
::Greetings, I am the friendly bot maintainer!  I am the guy responsible for the robot that maintains the expedition list pages, and will happily answer your question.  I have looked into the issue, and it is one I've run into a whole lot in the past.  It is very easy to programmatically parse out a user name from a user link, but much less so from a normal list of users.  Because of this, I had restricted non user-link participants to a single word.  The '-' character was not considered to be a part of a word, which is why that name was truncated after the Q.
 +
::So there's some good news here.  After looking through the parser, I've figured out a way for the bot to handle multiple word participants.  However, I still will be truncating after the '-' character.  In the past (and maybe even still today) people would list themselves as a participant, and after that use a dash and write some comments.  e.g.
 +
* [[User:Aperfectring|APR]] - Met up after lunch
 +
* APR's friend - Came with APR
 +
::I will continue looking for a way to address that, but for now, unfortunately, that is going to remain.  If you have any further questions or issues, please feel free to contact me directly on my user talk page.  --[[User:Aperfectring|aperfectring]] ([[User talk:Aperfectring|talk]]) 21:18, 22 October 2014 (EDT)

It would be nice if there were a way to get a recent changes list that only showed expeditons, or a random page that only chose from expeditions. While I do haunt the wiki enough, and I do care about Relet redoing obscure ribbons, sometimes I just want to know "so who's been geohashing lately and where did they go?" and I don't want to have to pick the last week's geohashes out of pages of photo uploads and user page tweaks. Is this remotely possible?  It could be driven by the "Expeditions" tag. -[[User:Robyn|Robyn]] 04:47, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

{{Note|Images can be categorised. Please add "''<nowiki>[[Category: Meetup on YYYY-MM-DD]]</nowiki>'' and ''<nowiki>[[Category: Meetup in LAT LONG]]</nowiki>''" to the summary of geohash meetup photos. This will then automatically generate galleries for that graticule and date (for example: [[:Category:Meetup on 2008-06-01]] and [[:Category:Meetup in 49 -123]])}}

Spam users

Please put all spam usernames/IPs here. Please do not create their userpage with the spam tag if it doesn't already exist. And please only add them if they have multiple edits -- most spam accounts are single use and never get touched again. --joannac 19:38, 21 November 2011 (EST)

To-do list

  • update All Graticules with any stray pages reletbot did this I assume?
  • Map NSW and Victoria
  • Tag images -- benjw's job!
  • Fix retro hashes done
  • Clear out Category:Tagged_for_deletion YAY!
  • Fix inconsistent Swedish grats (mainly around Stockholm) -- ekorren's job! and he did it months ago.
  • Tag expedition pages properly (Coords reached, Coords not reached, meetup on ..., meetup in ..., retro, failed, etc)
  • Check all the day pages are well-formed
  • Does File:Boatless.PNG have the error message we were seeing on the history page? Jiml 00:57, 9 July 2011 (EDT)
  • as per irc discussion: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgEmailConfirmToEdit --Crox 01:50, 13 October 2011 (EDT)

Embedded maps

I don't have IRC right now, but it seems the maps are broken again - eg. Berlin,_Germany does not show the Berlin graticule, and since it is >30W, it should always show some kind of geohash. The <30W templates also still show a blue square whenever the geohashes are not published yet. I know it's a code and a wiki thing, but maybe you can trigger whoever helped with the templates in the past. -- relet 08:21, 17 April 2012 (EDT) --

For the record, that was apparently caused by the template "dow" returning an empty string for 2012|04|16, as seen on User:Crox/Test. It was solved when Zigdon fixed the value returned for that day. --Crox 14:20, 17 April 2012 (EDT)

More admins?

Could I gently suggest asking if any of the well-regarded, trusted users would mind taking on admin privileges -- we've got over 50 items in the deletion category; it'd be nice to get that cleared out... I'm willing to volunteer, and have considerable experience being an admin at WP some years ago, but I don't know if I'm well known enough around here yet. JesseW 00:00, 17 May 2012 (EDT)

Edit page clarification

< Hijackal> joannac, please add the info that "by submitting, you agree that everything you post is GDFL" to the editing form <&joannac> Uh <&joannac> What's GDFL? < Hijackal> I think that does not become sufficiently clear by looking at the page right noe < Hijackal> Geohashing:Copyrights < Hijackal> Says some things. Which should be _absolutely_ made clear to _anyone_ clicking save ;)

Thanks Joanna, I don't know how I ended up uploading a duplicate. Anyway, I've cleaned up the remaining links to the duplicate. --Jevanyn 11:00, 29 August 2012 (EDT)

Problems registering

Hi! Sorry, I'm new here so I'm not sure this is the right way to do this kind of thing. Someone at the IRC said you were the one to contact :-) The problem: My brother is trying to sign up for geohashing but gets the error

Set $wgShowExceptionDetails = true; at the bottom of LocalSettings.php to show detailed debugging information.

when he requests the confirmation code. It seems it's some kind of internal error with the wiki?? Hope you can help! Thanks very much!! User:lizwiz 25 March 2012

Working on it. --joannac 18:27, 25 March 2012 (EDT)
Fixed. --joannac 08:17, 26 March 2012 (EDT)

Is it possible to change username?

I am currently changing my username across internet - is it possible to do it also here? Bulwersator (talk) 15:30, 21 July 2014 (EDT)

Sure, let me know what you want it to change to, and I can do it. I'll be using the Renameuser extension; just check its effects are okay with you. --joannac (talk) 18:37, 21 July 2014 (EDT)
I would like to change it to mkoniecz. Bulwersator (talk) 17:33, 22 July 2014 (EDT)
Done. Sorry for the delay, I didn't get a notification that you answered :( --joannac (talk) 02:11, 5 August 2014 (EDT)

Delete Photos and Pages

Hello Joannac, you seem to know how to delete an own uploades photo or may be a wrong created page. Could you please write a short easy-to-understand instruction for me or send me a link to an instruction?
Thanks very much!! --Q-Owl (talk) 06:27, 16 October 2014 (EDT)

Mark it for deletion with {{delete}} and I'll eventually get to deleting it --joannac (talk) 06:59, 16 October 2014 (EDT)
Marking pages in the first line of the edited text?
Hmmm, but where could I mark a Photo?
--Q-Owl (talk) 09:42, 16 October 2014 (EDT)
You can mark pages anywhere; first line of text is possibly easiest. You can edit photos; that's where the caption is stored. See Category:Tagged_for_deletion for examples. --joannac (talk) 17:01, 16 October 2014 (EDT)
Thank you very much!!--Q-Owl (talk) 05:44, 17 October 2014 (EDT)

Names of Participants (if not users)

There exists a problem with participants' names, if the names contain special characters or spaces and the participants are not registered users.
Examples:
a) 2014-10-22_63_28 and 2014-10-22:
"Pastori's daughter" becomes "Pastori's"
b) 2014-10-05_48_7 and 2014-10-05:
"Q-Owla" becomes "q"
May be, you know someone at xkcd who could fix this bug?

Names are shown in full length, if one uses [[User:Pastori's|Pastori's]] or [[User:Q-Owla|Q-Owla]]. But this looks strange (and red).

Hey, I didn't see anything in the actual expedition pages (all the names show collrectly), but I saw it on the date pages e.g. 2014-10-22. Is that the same thing you saw? If so, I think it's an aperfectbot parsing problem (since that's the thing that generates those pages). --joannac (talk) 18:09, 22 October 2014 (EDT)
Greetings, I am the friendly bot maintainer!
So there's some good news here. After looking through the parser, I've figured out a way for the bot to handle multiple word participants. However, I still will be truncating after the '-' character. In the past (and maybe even still today) people would list themselves as a participant, and after that use a dash and write some comments. e.g.
  • APR - Met up after lunch
  • APR's friend - Came with APR
I will continue looking for a way to address that, but for now, unfortunately, that is going to remain. If you have any further questions or issues, please feel free to contact me directly on my user talk page. --aperfectring (talk) 21:18, 22 October 2014 (EDT)

Thanks for putting up the Sitenotice! Since Zigdon's DJIA source works again, it can be removed now. --Calamus 13:53, 7 March 2015 (EST)

There are a lot of items in Category:Tagged_for_deletion. When will someone really delete all these things? Does this happen eg. monthly?--Q-Owl (talk) 04:32, 4 November 2015 (EST)
