2009-06-07 47 10/Plans
The planning alone for the 2009-06-07 47 10 expedition became so long that we stared to get warnings for too many kilobytes of text. This is the reason why I've put it in a separate page. A plan like this, after all, deserves its own page, where it can be read in all of its glory. --Zb 18:52, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

Transport there
The Eibsee can be reached by bus or rack railway (BZB) (schedule, pdf). Bayern-Tickets are probably valid on the bus, and, according to the FAQ section on BZB's website (German only) on the rack railway from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Grainau, leaving only the last part (one station from Grainau to Eibsee) for which we'd have to get extra tickets.
The Zugspitzbahn is a narrow gauge mountain railway which goes up to the highest peak of Germany. From the station of Grainau up it's running as a rack railway. Tickets to the peak are 42 EUR round trip, but tickets until Eibsee (which is already well into the rack railway part) are much cheaper, probably around 5 EUR one way. No information about the exact fare seems to be available at the rack railway's website, though. If anyone can find out how much the fare for the one station from Grainau to Eibsee is, please put it into this section.
Individual Timetables
Attention, all y'all: SEV! (I guess there ain't no good translation for words as truly German as Schienenersatzverkehr... but maybe shi#y exceptional vehicle counts?) There is construction work going on along the rail tracks between Tutzing and Weilheim. Trains do not run there and are substituted by buses. Please make sure you check the online schedules on DB's website because they take the extra buses into account! Please note that bikes are probably not an option because they may not be taken onto the buses (or only very few bikes may be allowed)! --Zb 20:02, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, I've seen that, and decided against bringing my bike (which would be of no use anyway, because the BZB gets us right up to the lake). --dawidi 20:13, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- Kayaks or other large things may also be a major problem on SEV buses! --Zb 20:15, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
There is an error in the DB timetable program. Some trains between München and Tutzing are shown with "Zug fällt aus" (train is cancelled). However, on the departure table of the respective station you see that there is another train marked "Zusatzzug/Ersatzzug" (additional train/replacement train) and identical schedule. The program is just too stupid to choose the replacement train and shows the cancelled train without any notification that there actually is a replacement. Make sure there is before relying on it, though. --Ekorren 11:10, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- I am pretty sure that there is a train leaving München for Tutzing at the discussed time. As far as I remember from last week when the construction work was already in progress, what happens is that the trains between München and Tutzing get different numbers than the original scheduled trains. The DB website tells me this:
10:12 RB 5417 Tutzing München Hbf Gl.27-36 Zug fällt aus (Train cancelled) 10:12 RB 88757 Tutzing München Hbf Gl.27-36 Zusatzzug/Ersatzzug (additional/replacement train) So, yes, let's just look for a Tutzing-bound train at 10:12 and let's not care if it will be called RB5417 or RB88757. I've put both numbers into the schedule below. I think we'll be fine. --Zb 16:39, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- I have no doubt that that train is going. The point is that if you ask for a connection e.g. from München to Garmisch, it shows you the first train with a message that it's cancelled but does not show the second one. This is a program error, IMHO. It's not actually a problem for us, more like confusing, and I wanted to prevent that someone gets in panic and tries to replan everything after finding the cancellation notice. --Ekorren 16:43, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
From/Through München
It seems that most of you change trains in München on the way to Garmisch, and that there are schedules including a train leaving München at 9:12am, and other schedules including a train leaving München at 10:12am.
- Schedules including the train arriving in Garmisch-Partenkirchen at 10:57am (RB 30611; leaving München Hbf at 9:12)
- o.k. for zb, acceptable for and two possible drag-along geohashers.
- no problem from Regensburg
- impossible to reach from Würzburg
- reachable from Tübingen at München-Pasing (better place to join is Weilheim)
- Schedules including the train arriving in Garmisch-Partenkirchen at 11:57am (RB5417; leaving München Hbf at 10:12)
- o.k. for zb, preferred by two possible drag-along geohashers.
- no problem from Regensburg
- possible from Würzburg to join at München
- possible from Tübingen to join at München Hbf (better place to join is Weilheim or even Garmisch-Partenkirchen)
After trying to figure out everyone's options, I think we might build our schedules along the way of RB5417 and meet somewhere on this train? --Zb 08:25, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

- The Würzburg crew might join in München Hbf?
- Travellers from Regensburg might also join in München Hbf?
- Geohaschers from Tübingen might join in Weilheim at 11:11?
- zb and two others plan to join in München Hbf.
From Würzburg
local traffic
- Start at Würzburg 6:41 , arrival at Treuchtlingen 8:30
- continuing at 8:35 (5 minutes), arrival at Augsburg 9:30
- continuing at 9:51 , arrival at Weilheim 11:16
- continuing at 12:11 , arrival at Garmisch-P. 12:56
- Bus from Garmisch 13:04 arrives at the Eibsee at 13:45
- Why not 5:31 and be there an hour earlier? The more time to explore the area, the better. --Ekorren 17:55, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
That would be:
- Start at Würzburg 5:31, arrival at Treuchtlingen 7:30
- continuing at 7:35, arrival at München 9:34
- continuing at 10:12, arrival at Weilheim 11:06
- continuing at 11:11, Garmisch 11:57
- Bus 12:14 arrives 12:55
Return:
- Bus at 17:10 arrives at Garmisch 17:51
- Train at 18:04 arrives at Weilheim 18:49
- then either continue at 18:53 (4 minutes), arrival at Augsburg 20:09
- continue at 20:28, arrival at Treuchtlingen 21:20, continue at 22:25, arrival at Würzburg 0:06
or visit Augsburg hashpoint (might still be too far), continue at 21:18, arrival at Nürnberg 22:25, continue at 23:35, arrival at Würzburg 0:56- or via München (arrival 19:48), continue at 20:25, arrival via Treuchtlingen at Würzburg 0:06
- or via München (arrival 19:48), visit Danatar's displaced origin (20:05 S1 to Oberschleißheim, 11 minutes for 2*300m + pictures, S1 back arrives 20:55), continue from München 21:09, arrival via Nürnberg at Würzburg 0:56
ICE
(by srs0?) I'm sure the above way is probably cheaper, but I have surgery at 06:30 Monday morning, so arriving home past midnight isn't an option for me. Here's my idea from Würzburg:
- Start at Würzburg at 08:31, arrival at München at 10:41 (ICE 581)
- Continuing at 11:12, arrival at Tutzing at 11:39 (RB 30613)
- Continuing at 11:46, arrival at Weilheim(Oberbay) at 12:06 (Bus)
- Continuing at 12:11, same as above from here.
38.00 euro with a BahnCard50
Return:
- Same to Weilheim(Oberbay)
- Continuing at 18:54, arrival at Tutzing at 19:14 (Bus)
- Continuing at 19:20, arrival at München at 19:48 (RB 5424)
- Continuing at 20:20, arrival at Würzburg at 22:35 (ICE 780)
38.00 euro with BahnCard50. (Round trip 76 euro each with BahnCard50.)
So much less time in transit, and I can hopefully get a couple hours more of sleep before my surgery. So Danatar/thepiguy, would you be open to taking that instead? --srs0?
You could also part from the group for the ICE part alone, only pay for that extra, and join the group ticket for the rest of the trip. --Ekorren 17:55, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Yes, the second version was by me (srs0). Also, since I don't actually know any of the plans yet (and asking thepiguy resulted in "I don't know, I'm not doing any of the planning"), what's the transportation outline? Ekorren mentioned a group ticket, so I assume that means the idea was to buy a 5-person ticket and use that? If so, I'll gladly pay for the ICE part and connection myself and re-join with the group in Weilheim. -Srs0 18:07, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, the plan definitely would be a Bayern-Ticket for all of you. If someone has some leftoevr money to throw away, I'll gladly take it because for me it's going to be much more expensive as I need to come from Baden-Württemberg and probably alone. I was about to cancel the idea because of that. --Ekorren 18:13, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
I vote for leave earlier for more time at the lake! 2km in a foot powered paddle boat is going to be hard... Thepiguy 18:16, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- I vote for the current schedules, as I need the rest. Normally I wouldn't care about lack of sleep, but right now I have to. -Srs0 18:28, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- I don't think the difference in lack of sleep is so much significant because of starting one hour earlier or later, while the difference in the time available at the destination is really significant because it's short enough already. We could aim at being back at a station an hour earlier and in case something goes wrong fall back to the original timetable, and otherwise see what to do with the time. --Ekorren 18:46, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- I hesitate to say that, but... as great as it would be to have you in the party, I'm not so sure whether it is a good idea to do that trip with a broken wrist. I definitely wouldn't have done it after my accident last year. If something happens, you might get in trouble with your insurance. --Ekorren 18:46, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- I guess he's talking about lack of sleep AFTER the expedition, before surgery, and he has a point there. We could use local trains for the way to the hashpoint and split up on the way back (srs0 ICE, rest local trains). For me the ICE is too expensive, since I don't have a BahnCard and it would cost me 150 Euros (180 if I buy a BahnCard). There should be no insurance problem with the arm, since it is in the cast and we'll take care of it. Sitting at home versus in the train should make no difference. - Danatar 18:52, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- We can all take the local at 5:31, which gets us to the lake around 12:30, and then me and srs0 can take the ICE back. Thepiguy 20:06, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
From Tübingen
I'm not going to decide any exact route in advance. I'll probably have my own ticket anyway, so I'm independent and can just take any route that takes me to GAP in time.
Three options for the way out as recommended by DB (these are probably not exactly what I'm going to do).
Early train:

There are also several options back, with identical arrival times. Either via Austria (Reutte in Tirol), this line offers really magnificient views. Too bad that it doesn't work out for most of us.

Ticket organisation
- Bayern-Tickets are 20 EUR for one and 28 EUR for 5 people, and valid on the bus and parts of the BZB.
- Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket is 37 EUR for 5 people, but probably not valid on bus and BZB.
- Tickets have one holder, who must keep it all the time. The rest of the group may change (with small precautions)
So, how many people come from where, and using which tickets?
- Würzburg: x people, 1 Bayern-Ticket (holder: Danatar), 5-x places still free
- Regensburg: 3 people, 1 Bayern-Ticket (holder: Dawidi?), 2 places still free
- Tübingen: 1 person, various options: either Wochenendticket (with 4 places free, 37 EUR, but not valid on BZB and bus); or Baden-Württemberg- and Bayern-Ticket for one person (39 EUR, no places free, or 47 with 4 places free). Depends on whether there are free places on the other Bayern-Tickets for the bus/BZB part. Joining another group for the ticket would only be cheaper if someone reroutes via Ulm or Neu-Ulm.
- München: ? Own tickets or joining others? Only the Regensburg group goes via München both directions.
- Thanks for starting to figure this out, Ekorren. dawidi (and his fellows) and me (and my fellows) will be able to figure things out once we meet on the platform in München, I suggest. --Zb 08:44, 6 June 2009 (UTC) -- oh, and I just noticed that some decisions depend on us having free unused places on our tickets. I'll be able to say for sure tonight, maybe the same for dawidi? --zb
- The sooner the better, as I'd like to plan out my ICE trip(s) as soon as I can. If you have a spare place on the tickets, I'll probably take the ICE both ways, as I want to save as much time as possible tomorrow. Regardless, I'll be taking the ICE home. -Srs0 08:54, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- I might not know how many people will come with me (and thus how many free places there are on my/our ticket) until early morning tomorrow, so Zb may have to adjust his ticket-buying plans based on what I post then. (Since you don't have to get up as early, that should be ok.) --dawidi 08:58, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- Dawidi, this sounds good to me. I guess it's reasonable to meet you and Srs0 in München and just find out what's best for me to do.
- Srs0, if I read your plans right, you on ICE trains means you go through München both ways as well? As far as I can say at this time, it'll either be just me or me+2. It seems to be the same for dawidi: him, him+1 or him+2. Either way, it seems very likeley that we have an extra place on one of our tickets, so I suggest you get your ICE ticket to München (and back from there) anyway and we'll find a good way to share tickets from München to Eibsee. --Zb 09:05, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'm thinking of ICE521 (arrive at München at 09:04) and ICE780 (depart München at 20:20). I'd have to find my way from München to München Gl.27-36, but I have an hour to do that on the way there. -Srs0 09:19, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- Here is a Map of München Hbf. Platforms 27-36 are those short stubs in the upper left corner. You basically have to follow platform 26 for about 200 m to get there. --Ekorren 09:25, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- As Ekorren said: Don't worry about the Gl.27-36 issue. It just means it's a wing of the bulding with tracks 27-36, nicknamed Starnberger Bahnhof. THe only reason why they use the special designation is that it takes slightly more time to walk from, say, track 16 to track 28 than from track 16 to track 20. Are you planning to reach RB30611, leaving München at 9:12 or RB5417, leaving München at 10:12? Dawidi was thinking about the 9:12, I am thinking about 10:12 and maybe meeting the folks from Würzburg there. Because, after all, in order to share tickets, we'd have to be on the same train. --Zb 09:29, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the map and explanation, Ekorren and Zb! I was thinking of the 10:12 train, to give me time to find some food or the like and to meet up with the other Würzburg people. I'll probably get the tickets to and from München in a couple hours, as I have to go to the Hbf today anyways. -Srs0 09:50, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- Alright, srs0 is taking the ICE both directions, and has his tickets. As mentioned before, he'll arrive at München at 09:04. Both srs0 and thepiguy will be taking the ICE home, and will be departing München at 20:20. -78.51.45.45 12:04, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- I might not know how many people will come with me (and thus how many free places there are on my/our ticket) until early morning tomorrow, so Zb may have to adjust his ticket-buying plans based on what I post then. - I found that I can reroute both directions via München Hbf. In case this saves the München people buying an own ticket, I may get a 5 person Bayern-Ticket which is 8 EUR more than the 1-person I need anyway, and so much cheaper than buying an own ticket for the München people. Need to know that before reaching Ulm, otherwise I plan tickets only for myself. --Ekorren 12:33, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- I think I'll come along as well, so it would be awesome if a place on a Ticket would be free. It could also happen, that I take other people with me, but I don't think so.
Ok, now that we have the very cool combined schedule above, I try to figure out a suggestion that might turn out to be cheap for everyone:
- Danatar, could you get a Bayern Ticket (for 5 people) when you start your trip in Würzburg and put your name on it? -> 1/5 taken.
- thepiguy will be able to travel with you on this ticket all the way to Grainau. -> 2/5 taken.
- Once both of you are in München with this ticket, srs0 will be able to join you. -> 3/5 taken.
- Since dawidi will be coming from Regensburg, I am fairly sure he will have a Bayern Ticket Single (for 1 person) or a normal Bayern Ticket (for 5) in case his friends join in. Either way will be cheapest for them anyway, I guess.
- zb: I've just found out that I won't drag along other geohashers, so it's just me. I'd be happy to join Danatar's ticket (and share the fare, of course) -> 4/5 taken.
- Ekorren, it might thus be best for you to take a Bayern Ticket Single because it looks like everyone can get to Grainau on either their own (dawidi +?) or Danatar's ticket.
- Baerenfell: If it's just me, I'd like a spot on a Ticket from and to Munich. Would be the one of Danatar, wouldn't it? -> 5/5 if its OK
- On the way back, dawidi+2 will again have their own tickets.
- Between Grainau and Munich, Danatar, thepiguy, srs0 and zb will be 4 out of 5 possible travellers on Danatar's ticket. In Munich, zb continues by bike and thepiguy and srs0 enjoy the the comfort and velocity of an ICE train, for which they already have their own tickets, leaving Danatar to go on whatever route he likes with his Bayern Ticket.
- Ekorren will also have his ticket. Ekorren, you said you may want to travel with a Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket. In case you want to do so: It seems like you can be the 5th traveller on Danatar's Bayern-Ticket on the BZB between Garmisch and Grainau.
I am kind of confused, so please let me know if I've forgotten anything or actually figured out the right things. --Zb 18:43, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
Sorry for being so spontaneous. I just added everything I think is important to get me on a ticket. I hope it works, otherwise I'll just grab a single ticket. --Baerenfell 19:08, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- Nothing to be sorry about. The last thing we want to do with our plans about not spending too much on DB tickets is to make it hard for anyone to join in. Ekorren, in case you would prefer to take the Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket (SWT): Would it be ok for you to get in touch with dawidi and find out if you can travel on his ticket on the BZB or just travel with a BW-Ticket and a BY-Ticket (both single) since they are just slightly more expensive than a SWT? --Zb 19:46, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
Where and when to meet in Munich
I suggest that all those who take the 10:12am train from Munich (RB5417) meet at 10:00am next to the platform of tr. 29 and 30, close to the ticket booth of the Bayerische Oberlandbahn (BOB). This will be the part of the train station where our train leaves. Do NOT buy any tickets at the BOB counter, though, because we won't be taking BOB trains. However, there are vending machines of Deutsche Bahn in this part of the station as well, and in case we still need tickets, we have to get any Bayern tickets at a vending machine anyway because they cost extra when you buy them at a counter, from humans. --Zb 10:23, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- There is probably no reason to not buy the Bayerntickets at the BOB office, though (ask for the price first, but usually non-DB railways do not charge the counter supplement. Don't know definitely about the B(ay)OB.). A Bayernticket is a Bayernticket, no matter where and how it was bought. Also, as I collect tickets and Ländertickets are a very special and already very large collection, I would appreciate any Bayernticket that is bought from any place which is not run by DB - so, rather buy it at the tram stop and send it to me after use if you want to do me a good favour :) --Ekorren 12:39, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- If they sell real Bayern tickets, there's of course nothing wrong with getting it at the BOB office. But make sure you really can get a Bayern ticket at their office and not the somewhat cheaper BOB ticket that's only valid on their trains and on the City zone (Innenraum) of Munich's bus/tram/subway/s-bahn network. The latter is awesome if you go to Tegernsee/Schliersee/Bayrischzell, but it can't be used on DB trains to Garmisch. --Zb 16:52, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- OK... Tomcat, Hans and myself will arrive at Gleis 26 around 9:15 and start looking for someone with an arm in a cast while heading to the BOB ticket office; we expect to find the rest of you there at some point before the 10:12 train departs from Gleis 28, and to meet ekorren either there or somewhere else on the way to the lake. Weather forecast is still not very good, let's hope it turns out acceptable for going out onto the lake. --dawidi 03:46, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
Food
In München, around the train station
For srs0 and others who have some time to kill in München: Bakeries within the train station are often expensive, only some are of good quality. My favourite one is not on the main floor where all the snack shops are, but one floor below, and it might be worth cheking if it's open on Sundays: Walk into the main hall, right behind the big display panel at the end of tracks 18 or 19. Take the short escalator down just one floor, where signs indicate you're on the way to subways U1 and U2. There is a small bakery to your left. Quality of food is about as good as on the main floor, prices are way better. The shop is below the flower shop ("Blumen") on the pdf map of the train station.
Also, many good options for bakeries, and especially Döner and Börek and the like are South of the main station, along Goethestr. and on the corners of Schwanthalerstr. or Landwehrstr. and Goethestr. and Schillerstr. Basically all of this is just one block... It's a turkish neighbourhood, known for a ton of computer stores, (mostly) good snack restaurants and porn/tabledance shops, the latter of course always seem to be found around the train station in big European cities, no matter what other influences the neighbourhood actually has.
Vegetarians might like spinach Börek with Feta (say: "Börek mit Spinat").
As far as food, avoid the streets East of the train station towards Karlsplatz (nicknamed "Stachus"). This is the center of the City. While there are nice buildings to see around Karlsplatz, it's really the touristy part with mostly restaurant chains. --Zb 10:03, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
At the geohash
I hope for a beer garden. --Zb 10:03, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
Weather
The forecast says that rain and T'storms are likely until noon on Sunday, with improving conditions in the afternoon. Those who consider a hike around the lake or further up in the mountains should be prepared and use appropriate care. Swimming or being on the water during T'storms is no option, but it definitely should not keep us from going and finding out what it looks like tomorrow. --Zb 07:47, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
Other stuff
Swimming
How warm would the water be this time of year? Warm enough for say... swimming? Thepiguy 19:35, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- Probably very cold. --Ekorren 19:49, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- Crap. Too late to back out now. Anyone a life guard? I"m not sure if I remember how to swim. Thepiguy 20:14, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- Have you seen the pedal boats with the slip'n'slide on the back, dude? --Zb 20:21, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- Is that what "Rutschenboot" is? OMG! DONE! 92.226.150.183 20:43, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- Affirmative. --Zb 21:19, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Hashcards
This one should be an opportunity for a Hashcard achievement. If you want a card from the Eibsee, just mail me your adress :) --Baerenfell 19:08, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- You can be sure: Look here. --Zb 20:12, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- Altogether, six (!) hashcards were sent. You'll be amazed! --Zb 06:27, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
New record!
We just broke the record of #edits on an expedition page - and we haven't even started yet! --Ekorren 20:45, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- We must be insane. Tomorrow, while we do the Eibsee, we really should discuss the OCD ribbon for super-anal planning. --Zb 20:47, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
