Talk:Daft Geohashing Around The World
This idea was very well supported, and some progress was made on the project at the time, but nothing has happened with it since April 2010. As such, I am moving it into limbo. --PeterRoder (talk) 17:22, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
- Support, and wanting everything with this to be hashed out quickly, so that he can go and take his picture. --aperfectring 16:38, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
- Support, I'll make it to another hash sooner or later. You might want to post sample pics so people know what orientation to hold their hands in. -- Phyzome 16:50, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
- yes, sample pics will be posted (to be taken at tomorrow's hash, probably). *goes to write FOO and BAR on his hands* --dawidi 16:54, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
- Support, I would love to have something to photograph besides my iphone and the backyard the hashes always fall in here. --LuxMundi 16:55, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
- Support, nice idea. This will need a lot of expeditions. according to wikipedia, 144 of them. Koepfel talk 17:01, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

- support - I like the concept, I see it as a mix between a distributed art project and a viral marketing effort... --Crox 12:48, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
- Support - I love the idea and there's an awful lot of latitude for creativity. We need to get Randall to cameo somewhere throughout the video, of course. Kozz 10:05, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
- Support - I really like this idea! And having such a video to promote geohashing would be wonderful of course! --HiroProtagonist 16:43, 19 January 2010 (UTC)
- Do not oppose - I'm no Daft Punk fan myself so I probably won't participate, but it would still be interesting to see the result. GL HF. --The ru 10:10, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
- Support - Daft Punk = awesome. Geohashing = awesome. Distributed Art project = awesome. This whole idea is simply 3 kinds of awesome. --Meghan 17:56, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
- Support - I think that in the spirit of Geohashing, there should be some "around"s and "the world"s on "The internet was here" signs. -- Eylrid 19:38, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
- Needs Work - I only withhold "support" because the 'how it works' should be properly hashed out before it goes live. -Robyn 04:48, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

Discussion on how to go about this: The words "Around the world" are said dozens of times in this video. They tend to come in groups. I suggest that we try to do something a little bit different with each set. Different hand orientations for different sets of the words maybe? Maybe using arms for some of the sets?
At the end, perhaps we could have a zoom out on google earth or something which shows markers at all visited hashpoints?
- Add them sequentially, one by one, very quickly, perhaps with a very rapid montage of the top pics? Kozz 10:05, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
Various ideas for the "around the world parts":
- write "around the world" on a pole/tree. circle with camera (video or several snapshots)
- write "around the world" on the wheels of your transportation device, program it on your spokelights.
I don't think we should go too heavy on the hands. We have so many different things to write on, and since we won't be using the same hands all the time, the effect would be lost completely. I'd rather write/stick papers to things related to geohashing and take pictures of that. What do you think. -- relet 13:45, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
- Hmm... good point. I meant the hands theme to help with continuity, but maybe that isn't really needed. It might help make the video stand on its own more, rather than being just a version of Daft Hands. While we're at it, maybe there is also a song that has the "around the world" idea with somewhat more varied lyrics? (I'd be ok even with renaming the achievement if something better comes up. This is still a work in progress.) --dawidi 16:12, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
- Oh, I think the song is a very good match. The theme of ever repeating around-the-worldness fits quite well to geohashing. :D -- relet 16:22, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
- I'd like to stick to the hands theme, to stay with the original daft hands video. What we're varying from the other videos is that we take images from all over the world, not that we uses non-hand objects, so I think this video will stand out anyway. I've made a test-animation. If everybody would take 4 pictures, two of each hand, one of each open and closed, we could put each two images next to each other. Obviously, there will always be a line in the middle of the picture, but I thank that's acceptable. Backgrounds would change every "around the world", this was just taken againt my wall. I'm okay with writing the opening text on other objects, but the lyrics should stay on the hands, imho. Koepfel talk 13:55, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
I would like to include something in the video that makes it clear the pictures were really taken from all around the world. Some first ideas are including the lat and long on the hands (smaller than the lyrics of course) or having a small worldmap in a corner of the video showing for each picture where it was taken (maybe with one of these google earth pins) Just some half-baked ideas, but otherwise I fear nobody will see that these pics are from around the world. --HiroProtagonist 16:43, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

Bar group themes
Every group of four bars with "around the world" should have a theme in common.
Theme ideas
- indoor hashes
- night hashes
- large gatherings
- different pose: hasher between hand and background
- water hashes
Intro text ideas
I have a few ideas for the intro text:
- Adventure generator (person in an Indiana Jones like outfit)
- Brought to you by (person in a delivery person's outfit)
- The xkcd webcomic (person in an XKCD T-shirt, and perhaps a black hat)
Probably more to come later, but I felt it would be a good idea to start spitting out more stuff here so we can get it moving again. --aperfectring 23:07, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
