Talk:First aid achievement

This achievement was proposed in the past, but has been rejected, because it is too easy to achieve in many cases. Please read the discussion page for more details.

As per the page proposed achievements: If an achievement has strong opposition and the reasons for opposition are not resolved through discussion, then the proposed achievements category is replaced with the rejected achievements category, the reason explained succinctly on the page, and the page otherwise marked to make sure it isn't confused with an achievements page.

While I love the idea of carrying a fire extinguisher for no apparent reason, I somehow don't like this achievement. It seems too... practical. In fact, every geohasher should bring basic first aid equipment when on an expedition into the unknown and potentially dangerous. It's almost like handing out an achievement for tying your shoes. --ilpadre 09:40, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

I carry mine wherever I go, the idea was to encourage those that don't. I think it could be compared to geotrashing - not every achievement has to be utterly pointless, require a lucky location or extreme dedication. If this can plant a seed in the minds of people that it's a good idea to come prepared, then yes, I think it's an achievement. --The ru 10:26, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

I can't see why this would be worth an achievement. I don't think it's original or funny. Just like carrying a bottle of water on an expedition is always a good idea though not always necessary, it doesn't make the expedition more interesting. --Ekorren 11:03, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Seems a little obvious, yes. I suppose once the geohasher has put together the first aid kit it might stay with their stuff and make it more likely for hem to bring it next time, but it might be like the fire safety one, where they get a laugh once for strapping a fire extinguisher to their bike and then that's the end of it. It's almost wrong to say that it's an achievement. I agree with the shoe-tying comment. DNO -Robyn 21:11, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Maybe it could be reworked into a Lifesaver Achievement, where a geohasher gets to use their first aid kit/CPR skills/improvised surgery to help someone else (geohasher or not) that has had a serious accident. Feels like another "do it and we'll make the ribbon" though, since it's not really anything anyone can strive for (and it's hardly a "lucky" location). --The ru 21:29, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Oppose. I don't think it's exciting enough. Also: First aid kits are in the trunk of every car (your legislation may vary), putting drivers in a very comfortable position. -- relet 21:01, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

I seem to be making a habit of disagreeing here, but I support this. Just because an achievement is easy doesn't mean that it is bad. Land geohash, for example, is pretty easy, but we'd never think of getting rid of it...As someone who doesn't carry a first aid kit, or very rarely does, in a country where it is rare, I support this wholeheartedly in the spirit of the Geotrashing ribbon, we don't always do it, but we should. Oppose And not just because UnwiseOwl supports it. I think this should be listed on the What_to_bring list, and not just under the MNIMB section. It is a great idea to bring one with you, but I don't see it as something worthy of a reward. We don't reward people for bringing shoes, or a GPS unit to the hashpoints, even though both of those are also important items to have. While promoting safety is good, I think that creating an achievement might suggest to some that carrying a first aid kit is not something most of us (should) do on a regular basis. Even keeping it for using the first aid kit doesn't seem appropriate. If someone uses a first aid kit to help another geohasher (or random passerby) who has had a serious injury while on an expedition, that would seem more something to go in the Hall_of_amazingness. I think this achievement, if for using the first aid kit, would be claimed by people putting antiseptic and bandages on cuts and bruises. That is great, but not really what I see as an achievement. --aperfectring 13:20, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
