Our Graticule

The Newark graticule is at 40 N, -74 W. This graticule is among the most populous in the United States, with a population in the neighborhood of 7 million people. It includes almost the entire northern half of New Jersey, the most densely populated state (Census), as well as Staten Island, western sections of Brooklyn and lower Manhattan in New York, and a part of Pennsylvania northeast of Philadelphia. In addition, other than Raritan Bay, there are no large sections of water.

Daily geohash

2012-08-30:

• In (40,-74), the geohash is just east of the center of Rosemont, a little town near the Delaware with an unusually large post office.
• Also nearby (and more easily reached) in (40,-73), the geohash is in a cove on the bay side of Sandy Hook. (IIRC you have to pay to go on the beach, but not necessarily if you are going elsewhere e.g. the lighthouse.)

2012-08-29:

• "We're going to be in the Hudson." Anyone travelling through the Holland Tunnel today qualifies for the Admit One geohash and an Underground geohash achievement. Taking one of the many ferries gets you a Water geohash and a Public Transit geohash. Landing a passenger jet on the Hudson gets your name in the paper.

Interesting reachable locations will be posted the same day as they come up. The 80%-90% rate of private property discourages me from updating more often.

Meetups will typically be on Saturday afternoon, at a time to be determined to maximize turnout. The location will be the most interesting and/or accessible of the week; typically open to discussion.
