Mother Nature vs. The Internet vs. Civilization

The project is underway, slowly but surely. In a week or so, I will have read every expedition page on the site, and edited most of them. Opposing categories are exclusive - if the expedition failed, it will only have one failure type. Here's the statistical categories you can check out:

• Category:Expeditions vs Category:Expedition planning
• Category:Coordinates reached vs Category:Coordinates not reached
• Category:Failed - Mother Nature vs Category:Failed - No public access vs Category:Failed - Technology

Up to May 30

• 99 were reached vs 54 not reached.
• Private property leads failures with 30, followed by Mother Nature with 18, then Technology failure with 4.

All categorized through August 15th, but I've found a few lurking in strange places (on the graticule page, on a user page, etc.) Eventually I will have expedition pages created for all of these, then we will have a nearly complete count.

Multihash

Was it eight, nine or ten? There seem to be ten points on the map, nine names in the list and you called it eight. Very impressive, and as I may just be the only person who can travel faster than a guy in a fast car on the Autobahn, I may have a duty to do more.

I'll make you a ribbon later. Any ideas for the icon.

I'm also thihking of creating a new achievement for "Getting to more hashes in a given week than Relet." It would be very difficult for most people to achieve, but almost impossible for you. I'd like to see you try! -Robyn 02:09, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

I actually didn't remember the multihash ribbon existing, but someone has been busy and made one. After I wrote the comment I realized that you already had the ribbon on your page, but I figured you'd find some other meaning for my comment, or just decide I was crazy. -)

Yeah, I've wanted to do the air monster hash for a while, but it seemed like cheating. I wanted to give the ground-based people a chance. Now that you've set a hard-to-beat benchmark, I don't mind finding a line across the country that takes me through 40 geohashes. I feel a little sleazy taking graticule virginity that way, though.

Oh and I looove my ribbon. I was more worried about bears than alligators at this latitude, but the sentiment is exact. -Robyn 13:37, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Most active graticules

God, I love Wiki. A person never has to either come up with original ideas OR finish anything, but there's always something interesting to do, and things get done anyway. Thanks for picking up the baton on the most active idea. There may be a way to automate the monthly score list, but I haven't played with that side of wiki yet. -Robyn

Wow, Nice User Page

What an elaborate user page. I just came over to say sorry for being grouchy about the user page/expedition thing, and thanks for realizing that was what happened. I'll tell you why I always update my user page first: for a while I didn't know how to make a new page without first creating a link to it. I didn't know you could just type in the page title to start editing it. So I HAD to edit my user page in order to link to the expedition. So it became a habit. And I WAS tired. :-)

Hallo relet, ich habe eine kurze Erläuterung der geohashing-Spielregeln geschrieben, die man Hausbesitzern als Vorwarnung am Tag vor einer Expedition einwerfen kann (wenn man schon mal am hashpoint vorbeikommt, also eher nicht jedes Mal): Ambassador-DE. Fällt Dir ein Verbesserungsvorschlag ein? Wenn nicht, dann werde ich eine passende Seite zum Einbinden suchen und auch noch eine englische Version erstellen. re: Pirates

I got your message, and I do apologize for changing your user page. The problem stems from having no string matching functions in the wiki markup language. All I have is
{{#ifeq|{{PAGENAME}}|{{{name}}}|....}}
It was especially tricky/annoying in your case because your user name is not capitalized, but the page title is. I tried
{{#ifeq|{{{name}}}|(nothing)|[[Category:Pirates]]|}}
but surprisingly it didn't work. Your user page can be changed back if you like, it's hard to find the Pirates and Buccaneers categories at the bottom anyway, with all the others down there :-) -- Jevanyn

Thanks, I did not know that about category indexing. I checked mediawiki again, and I think I can get the template closer to what I want. With regards to merging the "Pirates" and "Water Geohash achievements" categories, I'm actually aiming to put only users into "Pirates", and only geohashes into the other. -- Jevanyn

Norway

Thanks for doing all the work creating the Norwegian graticules. I'm an immigrant to Norway (originally from Canada), but once I found this resource:

...which is a list of every cluster of people larger than 200 in Norway, my life got a bit easier, with regard to actually naming them.

Land Usage and Map Zone Stats

Hello, I'm user User:Benjaminb37 from France. After reading your Python script "Land Usage" I tried to run it on the server that hosts my web site, and it failed (no Python out-of-the-box). Then I re-coded your script in PHP and tested it, it worked fine for very small pictures, failed for graticule images (no precise error message, I don't know if it's a "time-out" reason).

So, I was wondering how I could compute the precentages of my home graticule when I decided to make a console application to do that. This tool is called "Map Zone Stats" and is hosted at my homepage. It works fine testing pictures 7000 by 7000 pixels large. I would like your comments about it (but no obligation here, ok?), and I tested it with the (home) graticule picture and the zone definitions file you can get there: it gaves me a recognition rate of 71.24 % and :

I know it's not perfect, I'll try to test/make it O.S. independant soon (maybe with FreePascal, if it can accept the GraphicEx library I use to load very large pictures) and to add features like (as I'm considering doing now) a listing of un-matched pixel colors and a "tolerance" tweaking to accept pixels with colors very similar to "registered" ones. If you think this is a good idea, I'll add a new page to this wiki (Map Zone Stats), fill it with informations about the software, and link it to yours (Land Usage).

Although "Map Zone Stats" hasn't the same appeal as your script and lacks its straightforwardness, I'd like to thank you for your initial idea... --Benjaminb37 00:43, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
