Revision as of 18:39, 11 August 2009

For some reason this discussion was deleted from the Talk: Geohashing Quotes page before it was resolved. We still need T-shirts. I want mine in time for Algorithm Day.

I think we need a geohashing T-shirt. Maybe "XKCD" in FBI-like letters across the back and "Don't Worry. We're from the Internet" on the front. -Robyn 08:12, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

I completely agree. Sounds like a great idea. Do you think we would need some kind of permission to do the letters like the 'college' style shirt that is in the XKCD store? Or would we just go for something different...--CJ 01:37, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
I've been looking into how I could go about printing a "Geohashers: Adventure Capitalists" bummper sticker for a while, but I guess this sounds fun too. I don't care what it looks like, though, I don't do stylish.-- UnwiseOwl 01:49, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
The T-shirt idea is brilliant. We'd definitely get two. Either T-shirts or geohashing hats. Or both. --Woodveil 04:07, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
Okay I'm definitely going to get to work on making this happen. Hit me up with suggestions for what people want! --CJ 06:49, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
I don't believe that we need any sort of permission to use the letters XKCD. I'm not married to the text of the suggestion I threw up, just looking for something specifically geohashing. None of the xkcd t-shirts that is for sale really speaks to me. We should brainstorm for a while. Maybe the Google maps red teardrop ... "the Internet sent me" ... some original Ilpadre artwork ... what else? -Robyn 06:54, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
I disagree on the letters: I'd think Randall would want the name of the comic treated as a trademark. But the typeface for something like this (DEA) should be public domain. I'd love to see either the main page logo or Ilpadre's Holy Hash on a T-shirt! -- Jevanyn 15:32, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
I agree about needing something particularly geohashing. Ideas of the geohasher logo is good, as well as some of Ilpadre's artwork. I'm thinking possibly "Don't worry - I'm from the Internet..." for the quote.--CJ 04:01, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
I doubt that Randall is possessive about the letters, seeing that he publishes the comic under Creative Commons [1]. My favourite Ilpadre drawing is the Globalhash. I might just put that on a shirt myself. I wouldn't buy the Holy Hash shirt: it's a great logo, but I don't want to be wearing something that could be offensive to someone religious whose property I was asking to go on. I'd buy the geohashing logo guy, but I'd want some words too, if not xkcd, than something about the Internet. -User:Robyn 18:17, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
I agree, the Holy Hash logo would be too strange for non-geohashers. I'd prefer the Globetrotter (Liberty version) or the geohashing logo. The quote could be "geohashing", "the internet is here", nothing, ... - Danatar 09:09, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
"Don't worry -- I'm from the Internet" is still my favourite quote so far for a t-shirt. -Robyn 15:40, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
Me too. (I've always wanted to actually post those words, and now I have.) But I prefer "... *We're* from ..." -- Benjw 17:17, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
Hmmm. Maybe I don't. Whatever, I can live with it either way.  :-) Benjw 17:18, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
I vote for the globetrotter, too. That thing is awesome. I've made my own shirt, by the way, using my "Adeventure Capitalist" idea, and if I ever find my camera, I'll post a picture for you all. (It's not very exciting, but it amuses me). -- UnwiseOwl 22:41, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
I like that adventure capitalist a lot. "To you it is a market crash.. to me it's just another hash." :P -- relet 23:17, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
OH wow...there's definitely a song in this. Submit lyrics here. -- UnwiseOwl 23:40, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

I like both "Adventure Capitalist" or "Don't worry, we're from the internet"... I'd buy either of them. -- Rhonda 00:21, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

"POSTED: Adventure Capitalist"; "POSTED: Do not fear. This person is from the internet and does not intend to cause any harm to people, animals or plants." cf. Image talk:2009-04-16 48 -122 otherwise posted.jpg--Zb 09:38, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
Also worth considering: "POSTED: The internet didn't stay home today." --Zb 18:51, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

My first attempt at a t-shirt arrived last saturday, just in time for 2009-04-19 49 12:

2009-04-19 49 12 widi back.jpg 2009-04-19 49 12 hans dawidi tomcat at the hash.jpg

I had asked Randall about using the image and the specific string "xkcd geohashing", and he replied "Sure, why not!". Since I'm unlikely to meet anyone who would find a geohashing in-joke (like the "adventure capitalist") funny without a lot of explanatory work, my intention is to just get the term into the public view. I imagine one day I'll cycle past someone who reads xkcd and recognizes the xkcd-ish artwork, but didn't know that geohashing is something (a few) people actually do, and decides to google it. 49 12 (in the front) is, of course, my home graticule. --dawidi 21:56, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

We're looking at small batches for individualistic, opinionated people all over the world. I believe this page should become a set of high-resolution image files so that each graticle/geohasher takes a somewhat mix and match approach what goes on their t-shirt. Can someone who knows these things specify the best resolution that suits t-shirt printing, and those like Dawidi who are ahead of the game upload the images in the appropriate format? Likewise, font-savvy people, please put together people's favourite sayings and then we can all choose what goes on the front, what goes on the back, and so on. Those who don't have the local technology necessary to create t-shirts from images can identify themselves and we'll find a solution for them, too. -Robyn 22:13, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

I strongly suggest to upload vector graphics (svg standard) with few colour layers for the image files. That allows to use them for screenprinting. And even if your local printer only does transfer prints, you can scale them to any resolution you like. -- relet 05:52, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

(I moved the discussion to the talk page, and here's my idea of how the page should be organized. I know it looks very widi-centric right now - please add your own creations! --dawidi 20:29, 2 May 2009 (UTC))

I really like the back of dawidi's suggestion, but I think we need something more on the front. I am not sure exactly what should be put there, but I do like the idea of putting home graticule coords on it. Perhaps "Adventure Capitalist <lat, lon>" on the front? I would really like to see this gain some traction, because it would be awesome. --aperfectring 02:32, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Spreadshirt

Aren't spreadshirts also available in the US at spreadshirt.com? -- relet 17:14, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

SVG in zip?

Could you link to the svg graphics directly? They are displayable in most modern browsers, and for example the geohashing logo is only 40kb large. Vector graphics *are* small, and http provides compressed transfer anyway. -- relet 18:19, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

eep! Why didn't I get a notification? :( I added the link now. I had zipped them to have all 3 relevant files together, not for saving bandwidth. --dawidi 06:21, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Official sale in xkcd shop

Hello there, Mr Munroe and associates.

We of the geohashing community have been considering getting ourselves t-shirts for quite a while now, and we're - more or less - in the final stages on design at the current time-you can see the designs and discussion at http://wiki.xkcd.com/geohashing/T-shirts. As we're a subgroup of - or rebellion from - the general xkcd community, we feel that the appropriate place to distribute such wares would be via the xkcd store. Although we're happy to set up our own non-profit stores - one of our fine Europeans already has at http://dawidi.spreadshirt.net/de/DE/Shop - we thought we owed you - and our egos - the courtesy of hosting it at the xkcd store first. We're really just thinking about one shirt - for now, anyway -, with a yet to be finalised design that we'd hope would be appealing even to those who aren't hashers - yet -, and would appreciate your thoughts on the matter, though we're sure you have plenty of other requests for t-shirts and the like. Of course, if you'd like to design your own geohashing shirt we'd probably like that even more...

Regards, Thom Diment - unwiseowl - and geohashers everywhere - or at least those places with the internet.

Wanted:

  • comments. good/bad idea?
  • concrete design(s) to give to Randall if he agrees. One should be dawidi's tshirt idea, maybe?

Note: draft email. Has not been sent yet

I think it's a fine idea. I'd also link to the T-shirts page so he can see what we're thinking about, and add something like "unless you'd prefer to make a new design for a geohashing-specific shirt." Just because he might, and it might be awesome. -Robyn 23:03, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
Ok, changes suggested by Robyn and dawidi added. I don't intend to send this until we've more or less beaten out a design we're all pretty happy with, so I'll work towards making that happen. Watch this space. -- UnwiseOwl 23:57, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
