A very unique hash in Surrey today! A boderhash in the US in this graticule. Very close to the border though, so it may not be wise to wander around those fields in the dark. The point is north of buntzen lake; we'd have to drive (or bike) to the lake's picnic area at the south end then hike along the power line right of way the length of the lake. The point is very close to the right of way. The right of way itself may or may not be bikeable, depending on the condition of the service road. [[2009-07-14 49 -122|Last time I was there]] I seem to recall it wasn't the smoothest of dirt roads, and that was in the summer. The entire border is marked only approximately along the 49th parallel.  The actual border, by law, does not follow the parallel but is located 'as surveyed.  Overall, Canada got the better part of the survey errors, but not in the Fraser Valley.  You might also enjoy reading up on the Pig War[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pig_War]. --[[User:Fbfree|Fbfree]] 21:21, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Looks like I'll go -- I expect I'll be there more around 11, though. I'll try to wake up earlier, but no promises. - Elbie 06:43, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
Ha, well, I slept in more than intended... -- Rhonda 17:14, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
Lol. I slept in as well, but Olympic Mayhem intimidated me from departing campus. Did you go? - Elbie 01:09, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
Actually no... By the time I was ready to head out it would have run into the afternoon plans. -- Rhonda 03:30, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

Who's up for a 5-mile (round trip) hike in the rain tomorrow? -- Rhonda

Potentially. I have plans at 17h, though. Think it could be biked? - Elbie 20:14, 30 January 2010 (UTC)
I was considering kayaking to today's point off Crescent Beach, but I don't see my to-do list getting done in time. I'll be in Victoria all day tomorrow -- visiting Linda & Elizabeth McClung. -Robyn 20:04, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

The point is north of buntzen lake; we'd have to drive (or bike) to the lake's picnic area at the south end then hike along the power line right of way the length of the lake. The point is very close to the right of way. The right of way itself may or may not be bikeable, depending on the condition of the service road. Last time I was there I seem to recall it wasn't the smoothest of dirt roads, and that was in the summer. I expect it's a lot muddier now. -- Rhonda 20:20, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

Hmm... I might be up for that... I'm not sure if I could be free before 13:00 though. I'll check back in the morning. Thepiguy 05:42, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
Do you have a vehicle? Mine is out of commission. -- Rhonda 17:44, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
Also, taking another look at the google satellite view, it looks like the access road might be paved, and our hike had just crossed an unpaved offshoot. Which means, if a vehicle with sufficient bike rack space is available, it could be an easy 5-mile bike ride with a very short hike at the end. -- Rhonda 17:52, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

It's looking sunny today so far. I'd be interested if I could get a ride. - Elbie 17:30, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, looks like I'm committed to rearranging 8 tonnes of first aid equipment later today. Thepiguy 19:48, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

19 January 2010

Skytrain accessible, but looks to be private property -- hard to tell if that is a home or a business with all the parking lots around, but I suspect home. I'll see how my day goes and maybe jump on a Skytrain in an hour or two to go see. -Robyn 18:39, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

It is good to see you two back at geohashing. --NWoodruff 19:21, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

Alas, I have labs until 18:00 and homework thereafter -- have fun! - Elbie 19:23, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

17 January 2010

Not only is it not far from a park road, but there's a manmade structure quite close by, which suggests access trails of some sort. I seem to have an appointment to play tag, though. -Robyn 19:15, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

An early start might get us back in town before 2 though... -- Rhonda 06:11, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

16 January 2010

Likely walkable. -Robyn 19:11, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

It would be a fairly long walk, and while low tide is noonish, it's not very much lower than high tide, according to the tide tables. Assuming I read them correctly -- Rhonda 06:08, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

15 January 2010

Looks good, but we've been by the area and it's in a fenced off heavily-restricted area on oil company property. -Robyn 19:09, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

This is in an Indian graveyard. While it looks accessible, it is marked as a restricted area on the map and should probably be left alone.

Leaving noonish to do this one as a pure bicycle geohash. I'll be there about 2:30 p.m. -Robyn 15:04, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Recalculating bus schedules to get there about 2:30 instead of 4 -- Rhonda 16:32, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Monday, April 13, 2009

Hm, somebody's backyard... -- Rhonda 15:13, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

I was looking at doing that as a public transit geohash if I finished my chores in time. -Robyn 15:24, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
Ha, so was I... looks to be a 2.5hr trip on transit for me. If my transfers work as described by translink, I'll be there at 4! -- Rhonda 15:27, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Saturday, October 18, 2008

It's out by the airport in Abbotsford. I think it's on accessible land near a prison. I can't be there as I'm out of the graticule, but it is within cycling distance of Vancouver. -Robyn 14:32, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Dude. I go to the University of the Fraser Valley. Two clicks walk, if that. I'm so totally going. Anyone else coming? We could meet up at the corner of McCallum and King for squishees, and I'll bring my board games! - Wmcduff 14:35, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

OK, after looking at that a bit more, I think that's less 'near a prison' and more 'on prison grounds'. The prison baseball field, apparently. That could be a no tresspassing hash in the making.[1] See Fraser Valley Institution for Women, Matsqui Institution, and Pacific Institution/Regional Health Centre -Wmcduff 19:36, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

First, a female geohasher needs to get arrested. Then we bake a cake with a GPS inside... --Thomcat 20:04, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
It's got three prisons in the complex; we could get a male arrested as well. If anyone else is still trying, want to meet up at the convenience store on the corner with the McDonald's Express about 3? -Wmcduff 20:20, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Saturday, August 23, 2008

The hash point is in someones backyard, right in White Rock. We can meet outside their house, right at the intersection of 10A Ave. and 160S Street, and then decide if it's worth knocking and checking out their back porch. I'm not sure about transit out there, but I'll be biking from Richmond and as usual I'll supply the Nibs!Thepiguy 16:57, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

I've just been screwed over by FedEx, and have to go pick up a package tomorrow. I may not be able to make it to the hash.Thepiguy 02:57, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

Too bad you can't make them deliver it to the geohash. -Robyn 03:13, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

Made it! anyone else manage to get out there? Straylight 02:39, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Congratulations! Sorry I couldn't be there. We'll catch each other soon I hope! Thepiguy 06:19, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Saturday, August 2, 2008

The geohash is on the train tracks just east of Braid SkyTrain Station, a few metres south of the Brunette Avenue / Highway 1 eastbound on-ramp.

There are no sidewalks on the on-ramp, which means pedestrian access might be dangerous; and the rail lines themselves are almost certainly private property. However, just south of the geohash is what looks like an access road to the Eaglequest Coquitlam golf course. If this road is accessible to the public, we should be able to get within 10-20 metres of the geohash point.

And there's mini golf nearby. Osmie 21:45, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Saturday, July 5, 2008

Geohash is in North Delta, south of Mackie Park, in the parking lot of Gray Elementary School. Definitely accessible. Closest buses are 312 (from Scott Road SkyTrain), 301 (from Richmond Centre), 314 (from King George). Queerasmoi 06:19, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

If the weather isn't to terribly bad i will be in attendance. I will try to be there at the standard 16:00 meet time. Garyuuko 23:52, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Trying for it, by bike or transit, haven't decided yet. Robyn 07:11, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

So I might drop by the spot tomorrow, not in the exact spot, but in the vicinity of the house, like up front somewhere. I have scrabble. Or I'll just sit in my car and play video games by myself waiting for anybody else to show up. - MegaHurtz

Three of us are making the epic transit trip out, then hiking from around Trinity Western. We won't have games but I'm sure we can figure something out. - Jakke

So you would be getting there about 4:45-5:00 then? - MHz

We can get there roughly any time by transit if we start early enough, using the community shuttle route. So I'd like to aim for 4. Queerasmoi 16:56, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Neatening Up Notable Dates

Notable dates on the main page is getting kind of long. Should we delete the less notable? Move them to a subpage? Leave them be? I think they should go to a subpage before they overwhelm the graticule page. Robyn 05:07, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

Looks alright for the nonce; we might want to make a /2008 page in the new year. -Wmcduff 06:21, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Border

Isn't the national border along the 49th parallel? I know it doesn't look that way in Google Maps, but that's Google's fault :-) -- Jevanyn 17:29, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

It mostly is. It's a bit quirky but it does actually move north or south a bit. -- Rhonda 17:36, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Apropos of nothing, You have to draw the line somewhere -- Jevanyn 17:48, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
This one's my fault. If you look at the peeron tool, it includes a bit of the US. so if the coords are .001, .XXX, the hash is in the states. Therefore this grat should also include the states...right? Blame Google Maps :) --joannac 22:14, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
When they were surveying the border they did't exactly have the most accurate tools. --Meghan 22:20, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

The entire border is marked only approximately along the 49th parallel. The actual border, by law, does not follow the parallel but is located 'as surveyed. Overall, Canada got the better part of the survey errors, but not in the Fraser Valley. You might also enjoy reading up on the Pig War[2]. --Fbfree 21:21, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
