I believe my geohash on 2008-12-06 in Minnesota is a new record. I don't have any photographic evidence of the temperature, but the photo of my GPS shows the time being 17:02, and the nearest weather station recorded temperatures of ~15°F (-9.4°C) at that time. :Sorry but I just claimed the record. The given temperatures of the weather stations can vary extremly high. For example, on my Geohash today, the weather station in Grünstadt gave a possible -14 at that time. In fact it was -7,2°C on the Geohash. If you are just 2KM away, but on a mountain, it might be the other way around. So, I think we should depend on real messured numbers at the exact location. Hope you don't mind. Wish you more nice Geohashings. -- Ryo 18:00, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

::Ha, no worries.  It's supposed be below -15°C this weekend here in Minneapolis, so that record may not stand all that long... Ademrudin 19:08, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

I think the -9.4 record is still good since it's more than 5 degrees below the previous record like the top of the page says.  If I'd've known that record didn't count, I would've went back to my 2008-12-17 43 -83 geohash with the thermometer and taken a quick temperature and claimed the record then.  As it was, it wasn't close.  So I didn't.  Oh well, I'm sure there'll be no shortage of cold up here. :-) --excellentdude 19:36, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

:Sorry, Ryo: Other people have not listed their thermometered -9.2°C and would have been able to claim the coldest before you did. While I never liked the 5°C difference weather station rule (bring a thermometer, lazy people!), I also think that the -9.4°C record is still good. It's been good for months, and the weather station rule is what it is. I wouldn't object to remove it for future hashes, though. -- relet 19:49, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

: I'm with relet. Ryo's record doesn't count. dawidi has done a colder hash 2008-12-30 49 12 with thermometer, as relet claims. --Arvid 20:37, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

I don't think this newest attempt (2010-01-04 43 -96‎) sets a new record for similar reasons.  There are two ways to break the record.  No temp was taken at the hash, and the day's high temperature wasn't 5°C below the previous record.  It's a good honorable mention, though.  --excellentdude 02:23, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

:I agree with excellentdude that the criteria wasn't met.  Temperature can vary greatly over a short distance or time, so weather reports don't mean much.  My attempt at setting a new record on 4 January 2010 was thwarted by a small hill that took me from -24 °C to -22 °C in just the last quarter mile to the hashpoint. -- Mark 04:07, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Given that the global hash in Antarctica will probably hold the all-time record for a really long time, I'd like to propose a "Coldest Geohash of the Year" achievement.  -- Jevanyn (talk) 08:47, 23 January 2015 (EST)

Surely this geohash was far colder than a nice 19°C! --CJ 14:46, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Just because you spilled that styrofoam on the ground? Ha! I see short trousers and sunglasses! -- Relet 14:50, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
One could guess that it was but, without a participant making the claim, and offering any sort of proof, I don't think we can offer-over the record. Ted 14:54, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
Nice??? It was raining half the time! It was just luck it was dry when I arrived at the hash, otherwise I'd have had trouble making pictures.--Arvid 15:23, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
Snow persists well into the sweltering summer in some parts, which is why I specifically excluded the presence of snow from being proof of a Frozen Geohash. I'm sure we'll see some great records as the winter comes on in the Northern hemisphere. maybe from these guys. -Robyn 15:46, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
I know some folks think it's lame, but it makes me smile that the 1st 3 record holders for "coldest geohash" were all in shorts & t-shirt weather (temps, anyway)...  :) I hope the next few are 58, 57 & 55.8°F... <G>
Exactly! I was so delighted that Tom took the bait for the first one. The warmer we start off, the more folks can have the fun of breaking the record. We'll get to parka weather soon enough. -Robyn 22:07, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

I'd love to find a hash in some food storage building with artificial cooling. I'd just totally have to ask for permission to enter the place. Maybe a quick jump into a supermarket freezer should suffice... ~:D -- Relet 21:50, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

Well its the middle of Winter here in Australia and according to my thermometer its only 11°C outside right now (at 11.30am). Only problem is I won't be able to get to today's hash...--CJ 01:38, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Unwise Owl! You've broken the unwritten rule by going to a geohash that was more than a full degree colder than the previous one. I don't know if your record should be allowed! :-) -Robyn 04:33, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

It wasn't supposed to be that cold, the internet thought it was 6 C. Whoops....--UnwiseOwl

Annual coldest geohash/
