It's pretty close to Oneonta Gorge, so I propose we meet at the Gorge and travel upstream as far as we can.  I've dragged the marker on the reference implementation to the proposed Gorge meetup spot. (It's the blue marker.)  I'll be there, of course, and I'll be bringing at least one friend.  If you come, be prepared to get at least your feet wet (river sandals strongly suggested) and possibly more (slippery rocks in the gorge.)  <b>UPDATE</b>: I'm likely going earlier than the official 4pm time, probably showing up at noon or so to explore the gorge early.  I'll head back out and be back at the parking area in time for the official meetup, though.  Bug repellent may be a good idea; I got gnawed on a bit out there last Sunday. I'd be up for that. I've never been (nor heard) of this particular hike so I grep'd around for information on it; Oregon.com seems to have a good description of it. Jhon 17:27, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

It seems someone planned a surprise birthday dinner for my father without informing anyone. So since I'm the only one who had plans, its going ahead as... planned which means I kinda have to be there. As much as I was looking forward to wading into the gorge I'll have to skip out on this one. Jhon 17:10, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Please subscribe to the mailing list for Portland Geohashing. It can be used to alert participants of interesting or accessible geohash locations who may otherwise not frequent the wiki page or be actively monitoring these on their own.

Meetup time
 +
It was proposed, and no objections were raised, so the official meetup time for our graticule(s)
 +
is now 2PM from Oct 1 to March 15, and 4PM for the rest of the year.  I'd say this applies to neighboring graticules as well.

Across I-5, west of Woodburn, about 500 feet into a field off of the many-named St. Louis Rd NE/Arbor Grove Rd NE/Deconinck Rd NE.
+
Planning and Coordination
This is the most easily accessible official Saturday meetup geohashing location, yet.  It's less than a mile from I-5.  Hope to see you there!

Kpeace: Went to the geohash location with a party of four. Nobody else arrived, but since only one of our party knew the others, our trip was still congruous with the spirit of meeting other people from different backgrounds united by a love of XKCD. Our group comprised:

Graticule Achievements
An 18-year-old recent high school graduate, environmentalist, and gay-rights advocate who is headed for college, probably to study chemistry.
+
{{Reverse Regional
A 13-year-old middle school graduate who enjoys video games and pyrotechnics.

A 38-year-old mad scientist and schemer.

The one who instigated this trip, and would only describe himself as “just this guy, you know?”

The location was very convenient, right next to an intersection though quite rural. We wrote “XKCD” with sticks on the ground before we left.

<!---I am hiding the graticule history for now, as having detail for 2008-2010 and nothing from 2011-2022 gives things an abandoned look. M5K

Zac: I was considering itThis isn't my home graticule, so I don't know the area that wellAlso, I have nothing else to do. :)
+
Graticule History
 +
2008
 +
This graticule has a long (for geohashing) and storied history.  It all began with the world's first ever geohashing expedition in February of 2008 during beta testing.  After the algorithm was announced, Portland maintained some modest activity, with plans or expeditions happening once a week or so into August.
 +
2009
 +
Unfortunately, though, this graticule, which is wonderful for geohashing, was then inactive until January of 2009, when activity started trickling back in.  The most active geohasher in the area, Jim, started at this time with his first expedition on 2009-01-19.  Activity continued to increase over the warm and generally pleasant summer months.  APR, one of the area's more active geohashers, was relocated here (from Florida) in September 2009, though he had visited (and geohashed) here earlier in 2009Activity briefly took a dip in September, but returned to more normal levels in October and November, the same timeframe that Michael 5000, another fairly active geohasher in the area, discovered geohashingSince then, the community has been fairly active, ranking 4th in November 2009, and tied for 2nd in December 2009 for expeditions.

Jessica: Sweet! Possibly see you there. Either way, I think I've got a group of three or so together. If all goes well, we'll be heading out in half of an hour or so. Might be a little late (or absent if Larch Mountain Road turns out to be evil), but eh.
+
2010
 +
The beginning of the year continued pretty much like the end of the previous one, with Portland being 4th for expeditions in January.  February and March maintained the activity for the area, but there was more graticule hopping, causing Portland to drop for number of expeditions. However, in April, activity exploded in the area. Portland had 9 expeditions, the most in its history in a single month, and McMinnville tied its previous record of 4 expeditions.

Zac: Almost made it.  I got about halfway (It was about a 2 mile hike from the road) before I started to feel a little nauseous and light headed:(  Did you end up making a go at it?  How about tomorrow's?
+
<!---Like with the History section, I'm hiding the archives pending work to cover the years from 2014 to presentHaving them visible gives the impression that the site is abandoned.
 +

Jessica: Eh, we drove as close as we could, but as we were about an hour late, we decided not to travel too far off the main road : \ It was quite pretty in that area, though. Oh, and 6/15's location looks beautiful. A golf course!

Erin: If anyone is interested, I'll most likely be at the Monday location. It appears to be near Walnut Grove, and it doesn't look too hard to get there. Hopefully I'll bring a small crowd with me, along with a picnic! I guess we'll stick to the XKCD Saturday meet time of around 4:00.

*Wait, don't you have to change the date to 2008-05-24? Then it changes to take place in the Molalla area. I might not make it to Saturday's, but how about Memorial Day's, in Vancouver?

* Drache and NoTerminal will be hosting the first Saturday GeoHashing meetup for the Portland Graticule this week.  Wherever it is, we'll be there with a chess board (or maybe two) and an arsenal of tech.  If it's somewhere unreachable, we'll be as close as we can get.  Look for a very dirty black VW Jetta or a silver Subaru Imprezza hatch-back with an over sized roof rack.  There will be XKCD signs in the windows and our actual GPS coordinates on the dash if we're not at the specified ones.  We'll also be on CB channel 36, family radio channel 13 with no codepage or codepage 0, and HAM radio frequency 146.52mhz, Callsign KC7KWX.  Our CBs are car mounted so switch to ham or family when you're close to the location.

The Portland graticule is at 45 N, 122 W. It completely encloses the city of Portland and some surrounding areas. The graticule is almost entirely land, much of it open and undeveloped, making this one of the best areas for geohashing.

Mailing List

Please subscribe to the mailing list for Portland Geohashing. It can be used to alert participants of interesting or accessible geohash locations who may otherwise not frequent the wiki page or be actively monitoring these on their own.

Meetup time

It was proposed, and no objections were raised, so the official meetup time for our graticule(s) is now 2PM from Oct 1 to March 15, and 4PM for the rest of the year. I'd say this applies to neighboring graticules as well.
