Jhon - Gonna be there with bells on! Hopefully I'll convince some friends to be dragged along. Stops afterward will probably include Ancient Wonders (Don't let the terrible website fool you) and a good Thai restaurant nearby. I'll be up in Camas before hand so if anyone in the greater Portland area needs a ride, you'll be on the way :)

Please subscribe to the mailing list for Portland Geohashing. It can be used to alert participants of interesting or accessible geohash locations who may otherwise not frequent the wiki page or be actively monitoring these on their own.

Meetup time
It was proposed, and no objections were raised, so the official meetup time for our graticule(s)
 +
is now 2PM from Oct 1 to March 15, and 4PM for the rest of the year.  I'd say this applies to neighboring graticules as well.

Field trip!  This week's point is in the NW corner of the graticule.  This means that if we jump one graticule south, we'd be in the outskirts of Salem.  I've never been to Salem, but I've met some geohashers from there and it would be cool to see them again.  If I can find anyone to ride with me or anyone to meet me in Salem (or both,) I'll be at the 44,-122 graticule's meetup point tomorrow.  Wil 18:39, 12 September 2008 (UTC)  UPDATE:  The meetup is in two hours.  Only one other person said they'd be making it and they emailed a few minutes ago to cancel.  Looks like I won't be headed down to Salem today.  Wil 21:03, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Wil: The actual location is just north of Silverton.  I've suggested an alternate location: OMSI in Portland.  See you there?  UPDATE: Some friends and I are probably going to head over early, around noon.  One person I spoke to expressed some disbelief (and a slight hint of derision) that I was going to OMSI, saying that it was "for kids".  Therefore, I figured a few extra hours at OMSI would be time well spent...  Anyway, I'll be hanging around the entrance of the museum at the official meetup time (16:00,) but I may be inside as early as noon.

The location is Here for those that want to Google Map it. As stated by Wil, it actually has a street view. Odd. Looks to be a field right off of I-5.

<!---I am hiding the graticule history for now, as having detail for 2008-2010 and nothing from 2011-2022 gives things an abandoned look. M5K

Locally, it is a mile away from Champoeg State Park and the nearest town is Woodburn.

Graticule History
 +
2008
 +
This graticule has a long (for geohashing) and storied history.  It all began with the world's first ever geohashing expedition in February of 2008 during beta testing.  After the algorithm was announced, Portland maintained some modest activity, with plans or expeditions happening once a week or so into August.
 +
2009
 +
Unfortunately, though, this graticule, which is wonderful for geohashing, was then inactive until January of 2009, when activity started trickling back in.  The most active geohasher in the area, Jim, started at this time with his first expedition on 2009-01-19. Activity continued to increase over the warm and generally pleasant summer months. APR, one of the area's more active geohashers, was relocated here (from Florida) in September 2009, though he had visited (and geohashed) here earlier in 2009. Activity briefly took a dip in September, but returned to more normal levels in October and November, the same timeframe that Michael 5000, another fairly active geohasher in the area, discovered geohashing.  Since then, the community has been fairly active, ranking 4th in November 2009, and tied for 2nd in December 2009 for expeditions.

Maravi will be there, and this will be his virgin Geohash. Yay!
+
2010
 +
The beginning of the year continued pretty much like the end of the previous one, with Portland being 4th for expeditions in January.  February and March maintained the activity for the area, but there was more graticule hopping, causing Portland to drop for number of expeditions.  However, in April, activity exploded in the area.  Portland had 9 expeditions, the most in its history in a single month, and McMinnville tied its previous record of 4 expeditions.

The point is out near Sandy.  It's relatively near Eagle Fern Park; we may be able to park there and walk to the actual point, if anyone's up for a 3-4 mile hike.

In Sandy, there's a burger place called Calamity Janes that seems to have decent reviews.  How about we find the point at 4pm and all go out for burgers afterwards?

* Forrest lives in Salem, and plans to bike out to whichever graticule is best located this Saturday.
+
|01-17<br>01-19<br>
* Alexp If anyone from Salem ever needs a lift to any of the Saturday Meet-ups let me know, I'll see what I can do.

*  Drache and NoTerminal will be hosting the first Saturday GeoHashing meetup for the Portland Graticule this week.  Wherever it is, we'll be there with a chess board (or maybe two) and an arsenal of tech.  If it's somewhere unreachable, we'll be as close as we can get.  Look for a very dirty black VW Jetta or a silver Subaru Imprezza hatch-back with an over sized roof rack.  There will be XKCD signs in the windows and our actual GPS coordinates on the dash if we're not at the specified ones.  We'll also be on CB channel 36, family radio channel 13 with no codepage or codepage 0, and HAM radio frequency 146.52mhz, Callsign KC7KWX.  Our CBs are car mounted so switch to ham or family when you're close to the location.

* Wil See my user page or specific dates above for more information.  Also on my user page is information about my Geohashing gallery.

* thefinn93 lives in Portland, has no car (too young) but knows how to use public transit well. I should start coming to these.

* Timmothy Tee I plan on going monday, with three other hashers. One of the "Geo-Cyclists"

* Admalledd live in Vancouver Washington, Another of the "Geo-Cyclists"

* doiuf Located in Vancouver, WA. Have yet to make a meet-up.

* Jessica may become an active member today, June 7, 2008.

* James Just stumbled onto geohashing and can't wait for next saturday

* Tim Ferrell I'm based in Salem and thinking about trying this out on 6/21.  What all should I bring for a meetup? I answered my own question and added a link.

* grishnav Moved to Seattle, so he's only going to get down here to hang out with you guys from time to time...

* Kpeace Live in Portland. Participated in first geohash on 6/28; I don't have a car so I'm at the mercy of my car-owning friends for distant hashes, but I am an avid bikerider so anything within navigable city limits or in the vicinity of the Springwater Corridor trail I may visit unilaterally.

* zem has a busy schedule and can't travel far without a car but will try whenever possible and/or feasible.

* Maggie lives in Portland, has a car, and enjoys geohashing very much.

* Maravi lives in Lake Oswego, Oregon and started GHing on 2 August 2008. Woo!

* 3riador lives at Reed College, is fairly mobile, and loves playing with GPS.

* JimL lives south of Hillsboro, and has a GPS unit.  He's been on 3 expeditions, only one currently documented.

Happy hunting!

It was from the Olden Times, back before the xkcd geohash wiki had gone live... but the February 17 meeting in the graticule should probably be celebrated all the same.  :)

Astoria Mt. St. Helens, Washington Mt. Rainier, Washington
McMinnville Portland The Dalles
Eugene Springfield Bend

Today's location: not yet announced

The Portland graticule is at 45 N, 122 W. It completely encloses the city of Portland and some surrounding areas. The graticule is almost entirely land, much of it open and undeveloped, making this one of the best areas for geohashing.

Mailing List

Please subscribe to the mailing list for Portland Geohashing. It can be used to alert participants of interesting or accessible geohash locations who may otherwise not frequent the wiki page or be actively monitoring these on their own.

Meetup time

It was proposed, and no objections were raised, so the official meetup time for our graticule(s) is now 2PM from Oct 1 to March 15, and 4PM for the rest of the year. I'd say this applies to neighboring graticules as well.
