It was the best of hashes, it was the worst of hashes, it was a hash of wisdom, it was a hash within stupidity distance, it was done while not trespassing (I believe), it was done while others stood incredulous, it was a Sunrise Achievement, it was a Midnight Achievement, it was another Geohashing Day, it was an attempt for a Coldest Geohash, we had made Mother Nature our bitch, she had made us hers, we were at a Holy Hash, we were all insane - in short, the hash was much like any other hash, in that it was reported on the wiki, it was awesome, and it was terrible, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

Description of Achievement

This cooperative achievement is achieved by a pair of geohashers. The first geohasher would attend a geohash in a place, for example, Vancouver, Washington, USA (in the Portland, Oregon graticule). That person, having proved their hash at that particular point, puts out a challenge to geohashers to reach a geohash in a different place with the same place name. For example, seeing the first challenge, a geohasher could reach coordinates in the city of Vancouver, British Columbia to complete the challenge. Note that the second geohasher must reach coordinates in a place officially named Vancouver, not just the Vancouver graticule.

The first geohasher issues the challenge when typing up the hash report by including an open challenge ribbon in the category below. Any other geohasher can claim a challenge when they type up their report if they've geohashed in a matched named place. When the second geohasher successfully completes the challenge, both geohashers gain this achievement.

Special distinction should be given to a pair of geohashers who manage to complete this achievement in a single day, in a pair of particularly small areas, or if claimed by separate geohashing expeditions on the same day. Particularly amusing stretching to get this achievement should also receive note (pairing Earth, Texas[1] with any other geohash, for instance).

Challenge System Details

  • Challenges require locations that are named by other than geohashers or those influenced by geohashers (no graticules, no paying someone to name a place for an hour).
  • If a challenge for a place name exists, claim that challenge rather than making a new one.
  • If a challenge has been claimed, you may make a new challenge with the same name.
  • You may make only one challenge per hash, but you get to decide which part of your location you use. (i.e. if you hash on Badger Road in Bellingham, Washington you could issue a challenge to Badger, Bellingham, or Washington.)
  • You may make only one challenge per hash/name combination. (i.e. If you've made one Vancouver challenge from the city in British Columbia, you may not make another Vancouver challenge from the same city in BC, but you could challenge Vancouver again from the city in Washington state.)
  • You must issue a challenge when reporting a hash; don't challenge for hashes you've done in the past, and add the challenge ribbon to both this page and your hash report page.
  • Challenges may not be claimed in the same graticule they were issued in, but may be claimed by the geohasher that issued the challenge.
  • You may bend things a little for language, but be gentle. (i.e. A hasher at a hash at Blue Mountain Ski Resort, Collingwood, Ontario could challenge Blue Mountain, and be satisfied by a geohash of Aoyama (Blue Mountain) neighbourhood in Tokyo, Japan.)
  • The challenger has final say if his or her challenge has been satisfied.
  • When a challenge has been satisfied, put the achievement ribbon on your hash report page (and your own and the challenger's if you want!), and replace the challenge ribbons on both this page and the hash report the challenge came from.
  • Challenges are claimed by first come, first served, but if multiple hashers claim in the same day, they all share the ribbon.
  • If you are attempting an open challenge, make a note under it to let people know so we can cheer you on!

Useful tools

Wikipedia's disambiguation pages (for example, Vancouver's [2]) are simple ways for finding shared city names.

Proof

Normal proof for a geohash applies, though posting a picture with the two geohashes of the challenge side by side is appreciated. Having place names in the pictures is excellent, but not required.
