This graticule covers the part of the United Kingdom (UK) from 52° to 53° latitude, and from 0° to 1° longitude. It contains the city of Cambridge, and several smaller towns including King's Lynn, Wisbech, Thetford, Ely, Newmarket and Haverhill.

Cambridge has enjoyed several spikes of activity over the last few years, and until Sheffield and then Norwich overtook it in 2011 (although we have since re-overtaken Sheffield), it was the UK's most active graticule. Although most of the early activity was based around the city, we are now fortunate enough to have active geohashers to the north and east as well, and new hashers and meetups in any part of the graticule are most definitely welcome. Meetups are always good!

The Cambridge graticule covers not only the county of Cambridgeshire, but also parts of Hertfordshire, Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and Lincolnshire. Geohashers reaching points in all these counties can claim a reverse regional achievement for this graticule. Most of the graticule is land, but the Norfolk coastline falls just inside its northern edge and, further west, it includes The Wash in Lincolnshire. Much of the terrain is quite flat, with some hillier land in the south, and much of it is farmland. As Cambridge itself is arguably the "cycling capital of England", the graticule offers excellent opportunities for bicycle geohashing.

Due to the symmetry of coordinates about the prime meridian, the neighbouring Northampton graticule, to the west, will never provide a closer hashpoint than our own graticule, no matter how close to the border you are. However, if the day's coordinates fall close to the meridian, then the hashpoints in the two graticules will be quite close together, offering a good opportunity for a Double geohash. Indeed, at this latitude, it even becomes possible to be in the uncertainty circle of both hashpoints simultaneously if the longitude is less than +/- 0.000100° -- this can be expected about once every 25 years.

Expeditions and Plans

Expeditions in this graticule are listed below in reverse date order. Here is a complete list of expeditions in Cambridge (52, 0) without descriptive details.

2022

If you're planning an expedition, please add to this section. People actively watch it and they might try to join you.

2019

  • 25 May 2019 (Sat): Mouseover Day: East of Brandon and south of the B1107, on a forest track in Suffolk, UK. Sourcerer reached the hashpoint at 3:30 and again at 4pm.
  • 21 May 2019 (Tue): A barley field near a wind farm near Stanhoe, Norfolk, UK. Sourcerer arrived just before 4pm to mark Geohashing Day.
  • 15 March 2019 (Fri): Just off Main Street in Hardwick, with the 52,-0 hashpoint only about half a mile away. Benjw visited in the afternoon.
  • 17 January 2019 (Thu): A pavement in Cambridge, and a mere 450 metres from Benjw's house; aiming for a 4pm meetup.

2018

  • 20 September 2018 (Thu): Right on a footpath just off the Newmarket Road in east Cambridge. Benjw will bike there at some convenient time (either to meet up with other hashers, or to avoid the rain).
  • 14 June 2018 (Thu): Benjw investigated a bush by the guided busway stop at Oakington.
  • 21 May 2018 (Mon): Sourcerer failed to reach an arable point west of the Great Ouse, West Lynn, Norfolk, UK.
  • 9 January 2018 (Tue): In the middle of the road in Broad Green, SE of Newmarket. Benjw intends to hit the hashpoint late morning.

The highest number of expeditions in a calendar year was the 81 during 2015, and the highest number in a month was 13, in August 2015. A few times, Cambridge has been the most active graticule in the world for a particular month, earning us some shiny ribbons. In 2015 Cambridge came third in the world for expeditions and coordinates-reached. There was stiff competition with Mannheim, Germany who came second in these categories. Congratulations to them!

The following are known to be currently active:

  • Benjw is in central Cambridge. He hashes by bicycle and car, albeit sporadically, but checks the wiki frequently and is always keen for meetups.
  • MagicIan is in the Norwich graticule.
  • PaintedJaguar is in Ely.
  • PeterRoder lives in central Cambridge during term time, and walks to hashes that are a couple of hours or less away.
  • Sourcerer based in the Norwich graticule frequently visits.
  • Transhumanist is in the Northampton graticule, but still considers himself a Cambridge resident and is working on improved means of transport.
  • The Tongs all live in Cambridge apart from B.

Other hashers have previously been active in this graticule; they are listed on the 2008 archive page.
