This graticule covers the part of the United Kingdom (UK) from 52° to 53° latitude, and from 0° to 1° longitude. It contains the city of Cambridge, and several smaller towns including King's Lynn, Wisbech, Thetford, Ely, Newmarket and Haverhill.

Cambridge is the UK's most active graticule, and although most of its activity is based around Cambridge itself, new hashers and meetups in any part of the graticule are most definitely welcome. Meetups are always good!

The area

The Cambridge graticule covers not only the county of Cambridgeshire, but also parts of Hertfordshire, Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and Lincolnshire. Most of it is land, but the Norfolk coastline falls just inside its northern edge, and, further west, it includes The Wash in Lincolnshire. Much of the terrain is quite flat, with some hillier land in the south, and much of it is farmland.

Due to the symmetry of coordinates about the prime meridian, the neighbouring Northampton graticule, to the west, will never provide a closer hashpoint than our own graticule, no matter how close to the border you are. However, if the day's coordinates fall close to the meridian, then the hashpoints in the two graticules will be quite close together, offering a good opportunity for a Double geohash.

As most of the graticule is very flat countryside, and Cambridge itself is arguably the "cycling capital of England", this graticule offers excellent opportunities for bicycle geohashing.

Future plans

Thursday 07 October 2010: Thursday's hashpoint is right on a public footpath a short walk from Stambourne, near Haverhill in the south of the graticule. Benjw has, coincidentally, the day off work and will aim to be there at 1pm. A picnic lunch will be had on the hashpoint if the weather is good (and it is indeed supposed to be sunny). Any geohashers are welcome and encouraged to join him, and a lift there is available from the Cambridge area if needed. Alternatively, if you can make it in the evening but not at lunchtime, then plans will be altered to suit. Post here or on Ben's talk page.

Cambridge enjoyed spikes of activity in mid-2008 and early 2009, and remains the UK's most geohashed graticule (with 42 expeditions to 2 October 2010, of which 36 have been successful). Happily, mid-2010 appears to be providing another fresh set of expeditions involving a few different geohashers. Here's what's happened recently.

2010

• 2 October 2010 (Sat): On a public footpath outside Stretham, near Ely. Benjw arrived at about 6:30pm and found a geocache a mere ten metres away.

• 1 October 2010 (Fri): Under a hedge in a field near Harston, south of Cambridge. Benjw visited, although it took two attempts to get the right spot.

• 24 September 2010 (Fri): A grassy area between two houses east of Boston, Lincolnshire, UK. Sourcerer arrived 90 seconds before midnight and waited for the hashpoint to vanish. This was hash 5 of a pentahash taking in Canterbury, London East, London West, Northampton and the Cambridge graticules.

• 19 September 2010 (Sun): A conifer plantation between the Peddar's Way long distance footpath and Great Hockham, Norfolk, UK. Sourcerer visited this spot. The GPS path is available at Wikiloc.

• 04 September 2010 (Sat): A sugar beet field east of Royston. Sourcerer visited this spot. It was the fourth point of a quad-hash covering Hull, Skegness, Northampton and Cambridge.

• 16 August 2010 (Mon): Off a footpath in a cornfield somewhere in the Fens. Benjw visited at 1:41 am as part of an over-midnight triple-hash expedition.

• 15 August 2010 (Sun): In a cornfield off the A1101 northwest of Littleport. Benjw made it a midnight geohash as part of a triple expedition.

• 14 August 2010 (Sat): Off a footpath through Easty Wood, near Cavendish, Suffolk. Benjw wasn't able to make a 4pm meetup, but went later in the evening.

• 13 August 2010 (Fri): A field, this time still full of corn, on the edge of Littleport. Benjw visited in the pouring rain at 4:30pm.

• 11 August 2010 (Wed): In a harvested cornfield at the south end of Soham. Benjw visited in the dark, at about 10:30pm.

• 10 August 2010 (Tue): At the edge of a field near North Pickenham, Norfolk. Benjw eventually found the village, but was halted by a "keep out" sign on the farm track.

• 7 August 2010 (Sat): In an elderberry tree near Syderstone. Sourcerer visited as part of a day trip to the north Norfolk coast.

• 2 August 2010 (Mon): On conservation land in Lakenheath Warren. Benjw discovered that it is unaccessible during the summer months.

• 30 July 2010 (Fri): By the side of a road west of Saffron Walden. Benjw visited in his lunch break.

• 27 July 2010 (Tue): On a public footpath through the golf course in Longstanton. Benjw cycled, and then on to the Northampton grat expedition.

• 22 July 2010 (Thu): Benjw drove through the hashpoint at nearly 70mph, on the A11 sliproad at Six Mile Bottom.

• 19 July 2010 (Mon): Benjw strolled up a hill and around a field near Little Shelford on the way home from work.

• 20 June 2010 (Sun): MagicIan completed this hash - his third of 4-in-a-row on this day - in an orchard near Wisbech.

• 7 January 2010 (Thu): Benjw attempted to get to a field in Hauxton, but was refused permission to enter private property.

• Benjw is in central Cambridge. He hashes by bicycle and car, but is unfortunately having to concentrate on university work until his finals in October.
• Gooseh is bike powered, though willing to cycle within a 15 mile radius of Cambridge provided it's sunny. He can occasionally procure 4 wheeled petrol powered methods of transport. He's unfortunately in more Northerly climes during term time.
• MagicIan is in the Norwich graticule.
• Sourcerer is also in the Norwich graticule.
• Stephen Turner is bike-powered.
