This graticule covers the part of the United Kingdom (UK) from 52° to 53° latitude, and from 0° to 1° longitude. It contains the city of Cambridge, and several smaller towns including King's Lynn, Wisbech, Thetford, Ely, Newmarket and Haverhill.

Until Sheffield overtook it in 2011, Cambridge was the UK's most active graticule. Although most of the early activity was based around the city, we are now fortunate enough to have active geohashers to the north and east as well, and new hashers and meetups in any part of the graticule are most definitely welcome. Meetups are always good!

Future plans

• 11 February 2015 (Wed) Sourcerer hopes to visit a field S.E. of Great Barton, Suffolk, UK, ETA 23:10.
• 12 February 2015 (Thu) Benjw intends to visit this field SW of Sutton, mid-afternoon. May even cycle, depending on weather and time constraints.

The area

The Cambridge graticule covers not only the county of Cambridgeshire, but also parts of Hertfordshire, Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and Lincolnshire. Most of it is land, but the Norfolk coastline falls just inside its northern edge, and, further west, it includes The Wash in Lincolnshire. Much of the terrain is quite flat, with some hillier land in the south, and much of it is farmland.

Due to the symmetry of coordinates about the prime meridian, the neighbouring Northampton graticule, to the west, will never provide a closer hashpoint than our own graticule, no matter how close to the border you are. However, if the day's coordinates fall close to the meridian, then the hashpoints in the two graticules will be quite close together, offering a good opportunity for a Double geohash.

As most of the graticule is very flat countryside, and Cambridge itself is arguably the "cycling capital of England", this graticule offers excellent opportunities for bicycle geohashing.

Cambridge has enjoyed several spikes of activity over the last few years, and was the UK's most geohashed graticule until Sheffield took over the record in 2011. Cambridge, Sheffield and Norwich are now vying for the title -- watch this space!

Here's what's happened recently.

2015

• 10 February 2015 (Tue): Benjw more-or-less reached the hashpoint, which was on a private driveway in the Fens, between Manea and March.
• 09 February 2015 (Thu): Sourcerer visited the hashpoint near Thetford Forest Park, Great Hocking, Norfolk.
• 29 January 2015 (Thu): At midnight, Sourcerer visited a field between Hadley and Ipswich in Suffolk.
• 19 January 2015 (Mon): Sourcerer visited a muddy field, east of Boston, Lincolnshire. His 7th of 7 today.
• 15 January 2015 (Thu): Sourcerer visited the hashpoint on the main road north of and through Long Melford, Suffolk.
• 09 January 2015 (Fri): Sourcerer visited the hashpoint between Withersfield and Temple End north of Haverhill, Suffolk.

2014

• 28 September 2014 (Sun): The Tongs visited the hashpoint in a field near Vestey Wood, near the Gog Magog Hills, just south of Cambridge.
• 22 September 2014 (Mon): Sourcerer visited the hashpoint close to the source of the River Little Ouse, Norfolk.
• 23 August 2014 (Sat): The Tongs visited the hashpoint in a field on a hillside near the village of Shaftenhoe End.
• 19 August 2014 (Tue): Sourcerer visited a barley field north west of Market Weston, Suffolk, arriving just after midnight.
• 17 August 2014 (Sun): The Tongs visited the hashpoint in a field just south of the A14 in Cambridge.
• 4 August 2014 (Mon): Sourcerer visited the hashpoint in a wildlife haven close to the lifeboat station at Wells Next The Sea, Norfolk.
• 29 June 2014 (Sun): Sourcerer and PaintedJaguar visited the hashpoint in the middle of Sluice Road, between the River Great Ouse and the village of Denver, a couple of miles from Downham Market.
• 2 April 2014 (Wed): A grassy bank next to the River Cam in Waterbeach, just north of Cambridge. Benjw cycled there late in the afternoon.
• 16 March 2014 (Sun): The side of a field in east Cambridge, just over the road from the airport. Benjw cycled over after a sunny pub lunch.
• 28 January 2014 (Tue): The side of a field in Sawston, next to a river and just off the footpath from Whittlesford. Benjw popped over for a lunch-time walk.

2008-2013

Ninety-seven expeditions took place between 2008 and 2013. These are detailed on the archive pages for 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. The highest number of expeditions in a calendar year was the 27 expeditions during 2010. In September 2012 this graticule was the most active in the UK with 11 expeditions, one was a retro, and all were successful.

• Transhumanist is in the Northampton graticule, but still considers himself a Cambridge resident and is working on improved means of transport.
• The Tongs are in Cambridge and have only just started geohashing.
