I'm now watching that page and will add my plans. I'm looking forward to a real meetup in our graticule. -- nick_mz

meetup graticule bug

Hi, just thought you'd like to know I finally found and fixed the bug in the meetup graticule template. Sorry it took so long! Matty 00:16, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Cool!

We are going to use your Hash Collision ribbon as an example for ours. Danke! NCBears

Sorry

Just deleted you entry in Template:Expedition_Images/2009-01-07. I added it back in again. No offence ment. Looking forward to your story. The images already look very promising. --Nahtanoj 23:34, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Offline / Computer problems log

2009-03-26

This morning my computer decided to end its lifespan. I checked a number of possibilities and it's probably the mainboard or processor. A new computer or spare parts to get it running again are not in sight anywhere, so it may be quite some time until I can do any serious work done including taking part here. I'll try to hit an internet cafe from time to time, and some geohashers have my phone number. Also, I can read email from the mobile phone, but not reply.

2009-03-28: Update

  • Got an offer I can't refuse but may take a few more days until I can pick it up (and some time more to get it running).
  • Trying to go hashing anyway ;)
  • Internetcafe is only a few minutes by bike and affordable for a quick "check the most urgent things"
  • I hate Micro$oft (but the Internetcafe uses their crap).

2009-03-30

The replacement is here. The good thing: It seems to work, somehow. Also, I basically only had to pay for transport and swap in something I wanted to give away anyway.

Apart from that, it's probably what results if you tell someone to build a computer that has to be all silver-blue, and cheap (at least in production). Rarely seen plastic parts of such bad quality, and stingy case interiors (Example: To save a few grams of metal, there is only one harddisk slot, and that's at a very annoying place to reach. There is lots of empty space at a reasonable place). Also it boots only after ignoring a number of timeouts which takes forever, and there is a number of other unresolved issues. I'll probably disassemble the whole thing and reassemble it in another case. With less "design" and more usability.

Why Is Cake Singular?

Because in English the stuff that is cake refers to as much of it as you need. "A lot of cake". "Cakes" would refer to plural whole cakes. I actually anticipated that you would ask that and included it on the Category page. -Robyn 03:32, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Garmin eTrex serial cable

Hey ekorren, I would love to know how to make the cable for the eTrex. I'm assuming the first generation GPS is the one that reads "High sensitivity" just above the screen and does not have that joystick thing in the top left? -Ephphatha 13:49, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

The "high sensitivity" model Etrex H is the third generation of etrexes, and it's the one I now have, but all of the generations of the base models (i.e. the one without joystick, maps and any other fancy stuff) use the same serial interface. I'm using my home made cable with the Etrex H now, and it works fine. Those self-made cables are serial cables, though, so they require a RS-232 interface on your computer or an adapter, which I don't know anything about. I'll send you more information by mail. --Ekorren 14:54, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Did you see the post on your graticule page? Take a look! We'll be there! Thepiguy 16:50, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Saw it, but I hoped you would choose another day or another location. Don't really want to pay so much ticket money for a high risk of No Tresspassing at a not very thrilling location in my own graticule. I can get that often enough much cheaper. --Ekorren 16:55, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Tron

The Tron achievement has a real ribbon now, which you probably want to switch to. -Robyn 18:48, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Bridges and Salesmen

I think your opposition was very clear and well-worded, but one thing confused me. Don't Europeans get the weekend hashes on Thursday afternoon, and Australians late on Thursday night? We get ours first thing in the morning on Friday, but the poor Newfoundlanders don't get them until 11 a.m. on Friday. Or do you get your Saturday, Sunday, Monday ones all on Friday afternoon? -Robyn 02:58, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

No, we use Friday's DJIA opening for Sat, sun, mon (since the dow opens on my friday night). --joannac 03:06, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
It's like a little compensation for 30W people getting every weekday the night before: non-30Ws have all day (for various values of "all day" depending on time zone) Friday in which to plan Saturday. -Robyn 04:43, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
The definition of W30 was IIRC, that whenever the DJIA of the same day is not available at noon, you use the one before. On saturdays, that's friday's for everyone. So, indeed, while we have the advantage of more planning time for weekday expeditions, for the weekend the americans have. This is probably also a reason why both epic german meetups were on sundays, not saturdays. It wouldn't have been possible to plan that all out in one evening. --Ekorren 08:34, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Well Wishes

Get well soon ekorren! Sorry to hear you are too ill to go geohashing. --aperfectring 20:01, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Hash trees

Hey, nice tree. Re the new category, what's it for? Trees exactly at the hashpoint or just trees in general? - Robyn

I may have coined the term (long ago, btw) - I use it for trees at or very close to the hashpoint. The category has been created by relet and he even defined it more strict. --Ekorren 22:47, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
Now I see that you have changed it to Hash tree, and that's an existing category. So I don't need to do anything about it. - Robyn.
And here, Joannac was faster to change that than I was to notice that the category doesn't follow the naming conventions... --Ekorren 07:46, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Thank you

for explaining the 4pm thing. Much appreciated! Looking forward to my Origin geohash plus Double Hash this Monday! Looks as if the final one will involve a meetup too, which is cool. --macronencer 00:00, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Ekorren the photographer

I think Ekorren is the best photographer on the wiki. There may be some inactive geohashers out there that I've missed, but he's quite active, takes many photos, and on average the quality is superb. This became most evident to me when I realized I would view main page gallery images and think, "must be one of Ekorren's". I've added a couple to my favourites, but in reality all his images work to provide a tour of Germany in a everyday perspective. Juventas 03:59, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Geocaches

Here are the two you found with me: GC1XWDV (the hash cache) and GC1XV0V (the one by my home). --davidc 22:33, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Small Hash Inquiry Tool (a.k.a. anthill)

I have used your Small Hash Inquiry Tool in a script I have written. The script automatically parses the data from your site and sends me an eMail half an hour after the NYSE opens with the distance and coordinates to the closesed GeoHash.

Currently there will be only one call to your server per day (except Today, due to testing of the script). I would be interested in the Source Code of your Small Hash Inquiry Tool, so that I can generate the data myself.

The Saturday hashpoint is near a creek, between Reilsheim and Mauer. Cheapest public transport connection would be Heidelberg-Altstadt - Reilsheim (two fare zones) and a 2x2 km walk. I have no plans yet, but looks like an easy expedition. --129.206.75.59 14:53, 8 January 2010 (UTC) (ilpadre)

Will go around noon (!) Have group ticket. Please call me, lost your number. --Ekorren 15:20, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

2010-01-16 49 7 - Wanna go there? Fivetonsofflax 15:51, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

Tempting, but no. I won't do the affordable bike/train combo tomorrow, since the road conditions here are ugly and dangerous. Also, I'm currently not at the best health, so it's probably reasonable not to do such a trip. I'll hope for a repetition with better weather. --Ekorren 16:53, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

Tale of Two Hashes

I'd take such entries if they are submitted, but I kinda like it how it is. UnwiseOwl 22:55, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Pforzheim

A few questions, planning 2010-10-19 48 8

  • I see from their tourism site that Pforzheim was bombed flat in the war. Do you know of anything I should try to see there, or is it as industrial as it sounds?
Pforzheim may be the town least worth visiting in the graticule. There's simply nothing to see, according to my standards ;) That is, unless you are specially interested in jewellery; people who are say the museum is worth a visit. Generally, Pforzheim is not actually a center of the graticule as it may sound. It's just the largest city by population which is not split.
  • Do train tickets cost the same at the station as online?
Yes, no, maybe. Most which are available online at all cost the same. Regional tickets usually aren't available online at all, and in your case it's probably a good idea to keep to regional tickets and use local trains (i.e. NOT IC, ICE, EC, TGV). The distance is short enough that those fast trains aren't of much use, and they are much more expensive. If you could elaborate your plans a bit (starting where? Going elsewhere during the day? How many people?) I'll be happy to recommend something which probably will be a daypass for a certain region. Btw: Most ticket machines have a language switch.
  • Does Schmuck really mean jewellery? In English it means 'sucker,' as in "that poor schmuck paid five euros to go to a jewellery museum in Pforzheim."
Schmuck is both jewellery and sometimes ornamentation. The base meaning is that it's something decorative.

I can't do the trip to tomorrow's hash, neither I'll probably be able to go on wednesday. I'll probably be available on thursday, friday, saturday morning and sunday. Chances for a meetup? --Ekorren 17:05, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

Oh this is good. I'm looking at your advice on the meetup discussion page. -Robyn 20:15, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

Good Call

Thanks for the quick edit on the Space Hash. -Robyn 18:10, 27 April 2011 (EDT)

Hi, are you going to write the expedition page? I dont really want because i dont have much experience with the wiki here, and im bad at writing.

I tend to just upload a few pictures and then postpone the rest until it is forgotten. I'll do that for sure, however, I had too much other stuff which I considered more important this week so I haven't even downloaded the pics from the camera yet... --Ekorren 15:54, 6 May 2011 (EDT)

Re: 2011-06-13 47 8

Hi, temporal order is perfectly ok as you were first on site. Your photo on the Main Page is a nice shot. As I said I decided Monday morning right after getting up and you were already on your way. Anyway, we must meet at some time. -TheOneRing 10:57, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Small Hash Inquiry Tool

I'm wondering if there is a small bug in your most useful hashpoint look-up tool. I am in 52, 1. I used this web address.

http://tjum.anthill.de/cgi-bin/geohash.cgi?lat=52&lon=1&nr=o&map=gs&size=240x240&t=&date=&unit=km

Everything is OK apart from Sunday where the 52,1 information seems not to be processed so I get 180,0 instead.

Today is friday, 2012-02-24
Calculating distances from graticule centre. For real distances enter exact home coordinates.
DJIA for 2012-02-23 is 12937.08
DJIA for 2012-02-24 is 12981.20

SmallHashBug-2012-02-24.jpg

Thanks for your sterling work! Sourcerer 11:11, 24 February 2012 (EST)

The bug should be fixed now. It would be quite interesting to check all other coordinate calculators with sunday's coordinates as well, since I wouldn't be surprised if someone else fell victim to the same effect. This would not necessarily shift all points to the equator but there may be more corrupt coordinates out there for sunday. --Ekorren 11:38, 24 February 2012 (EST)
I'll need to check next Friday to replicate the conditions but it looks OK today. Thanks for the speedy response. Sourcerer 04:01, 25 February 2012 (EST)
You'll fail :P --Ekorren 04:18, 25 February 2012 (EST)
To replicate the conditions you'll need a day for which one of the fractions is smaller than 0.0001. The error was that some string representation of a floating point number had unexpectedly switched to 6.666E-05 notation and with that confused the process of building coordinate sets. This happens about once every eight years, and it seems that sunday is the first time it happened since the tool is in use. However, forcing a different representation fixed the error. --Ekorren 04:18, 25 February 2012 (EST)
Cool bug! Now I'll have to check for at least the next eight years :) but maybe not if this xkcd actuarial table is correct :(

A New Friday Bug

OK so I'm beginning to get annoying. My apologies. When I zoom to a non-default level such as 8/2, not all the squares display as expected. The Friday grid is OK. On Saturday, the NW, N and NE maps are OK but the others display a crossed out map. On the Sunday and Monday grids, all the maps show the crossing out. There may be a less obvious globalhash problem as the Friday map scale looks a lot different to the Sat, Sun and Mon ones. This is not a show stopping problem so please don't put yourself out to produce a quick fix. I'm using your program as it's now the best solution for my needs by a large margin. Sourcerer 11:03, 2 March 2012 (EST)

It's a long-standing problem with the Google API. As far as I heard, it won't be fixed. -- relet 11:04, 2 March 2012 (EST)
Google maps seems to restrict the number of map requests from a single IP within of a short time. Just try again later. --Ekorren 11:09, 2 March 2012 (EST)
It doesn't actually fix the problem if you have to wait ten minutes before clicking on the next day. Since it's map requests, not tile requests, could you somehow make that a single map? -- relet 11:27, 2 March 2012 (EST)
