2009 Meetups
2009-11-07 in Surrey
Who feels like a bike ride? 2009-11-07 49 -122 - Elbie 18:46, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
- Sounds like fun, although I think Robyn and I will be taking the bus, not bike. --Wade 04:17, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
- Are we aiming for the traditional 16:00 meetup, or is another time better? --Wade 08:05, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
2009-10-11 White Rock or Nanaimo?
The Sunday hash for the Van graticule is near Nanaimo and looks accessible (in a forest), but I'm hesitant to be on the Ferries during a long weekend. The hash for the Surrey graticule is off the coast of White Rock, but might be on land at low tide. Anybody interested in either? Any clue if the latter will be a land or water hash? - Elbie 21:42, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
- Low tide, such as it is, will be at 5:00 AM on Sunday (http://www.waterlevels.gc.ca/cgi-bin/tide-shc.cgi?queryType=showFrameset&language=english®ion=1&zone=10&stnnum=7735). I'm not sure I care about Geohashing enough to be anywhere other than in bed at 5:00 AM. And I can't commit the entire day (I'm busy between 8:30 and 15:00 PST), so a Sunday trip to Nanaimo is not for me. --Wade 22:11, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
2009-10-10 Victoria or Burlington?
Saturday's Victoria hash is in a heavily wooded park just north of Victoria, and the Bellingham one is in Bulrington, a nice 2 hour or so drive south. There is the issue of ferries and borders on a long weekend, but I do have a secret weapon to get priority boarding on the ferry. I think I'll try to arrange to have the day free on Saturday. Anyone else interested? --Wade 22:18, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
- I have plans on Saturday from 8-9:30 AM and then at 6:30 PM -- not enough time in between for a ferry trip to Victoria, probably. How long do you think the border wait would be? - Elbie 22:23, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
- I dunno, but I guess an hour or more. The Canadian dollar is high (0.95 USD), and there's Christmas selling season startng, so there might be a lot of Canadians heading south for shopping. --Wade
- US border is 1 hr, 20 minutes or so as of 10:00. Canadian border is less than 10 minutes now, but who knows what it will be later this afternoon? --Wade 18:00, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
- Robyn and I are debating how one might get there. She thinks a bicycle has no border wait time, but I think a bicycle is insane for that distance. She's insane, so doesn't see a problem with that. I think I'll stick with motorized transportation, either her pilotmobile or my bike. --Wade 04:49, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
- Did you wind up going? I wound up caught up with other things. - Elbie 02:31, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
- Nah, the border wait scared me, and even with my top secret priority boarding trick on the ferries, the fact that they had one ferry out of commission on one of the busiest weekends of the year made me think I really didn't want to do that. So I had a mellow day at home and picked apples instead. --Wade 06:37, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

2009-10-01 Surrey
2009-10-01 49 -122 is a transit accessable geohash today. Anyone else interested in going after work (e.g. meet up around 7:30 or 8:00)? --Wade 17:02, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
- Hello? Anyone? I thought that there would be a swarm of geohashers decending on any accessable point in the lower mainland! --Wade
- I'm home sick, so no geohashing for me. :( - Elbie 00:19, 2 October 2009 (UTC)
2009-09-27
Feeling adventurous? 3 Vancouver Geohashers will be attempting these alternate coordinates.
12 sept / surrey
2009-09-12 49 -122 In the lake near a day use area in golden ears park
Tuesday, September 1 in Paradise Valley
Just a little north of squamish. Driving up from north van, 3 free seats in the car if you can make it to the north shore seabus terminal by 6:30p --Xore 16:10, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
2009-08-22 Hope
Bowen Island: A water hash on a small lake. Close to a road.
Hope: 150m uphill in bush from the Othello Tunnels (a destination onto themselves).
I'd like to do Hope, if someone else would like to join. A multihash is possible too for someone. --Fbfree 16:05, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- I probably won't make it. I need to do a major cleanup for guests arriving Sunday. --Fbfree 05:12, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
The lake on Bowen Island -- Grafton Lake -- is a water reservoir, so no trespassing. - Elbie 20:09, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
Saturday, August 8 in Victoria
Wow! An accessible Geohash within Victoria! For Saturday, this location is quite close to Butchart Gardens, so I totally plan on being there -- would be great to meet other Geohashers if you can make it. See the Meetup page I created (click the link above). --Wenslayer 16:27, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
Friday, Jul 31
Burnaby hash, near kingsway and willingdon. I'm going to go, between 3pm and 6pm. anyone else? Plypkie 13:58, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
- I can maybe make it there for 5:45 or 6pm. won't be able to get there much earlier, i think --Xore 19:42, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Very tempted to do so but not sure if I can just leave work early. It would just be a bus ride and skytrain from UBC though. If anyone from UBC is going, I might join them depending on time (Maybe we can leave around 3-4pm?). Let me know: henryngo@physics.ubc.ca --142.103.107.13 16:20, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
I'm also tempted to go, but I can't leave campus until 18:00. - Elbie 16:22, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
If only I hadn't cycled all the way in from Vancouver yesterday. It's multihashable to the Surrey graticule. But ow. --Fbfree 19:20, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Tuesday, Jul 28
It's right in the middle of Nanaimo! Anybody in Nanaimo today? [1] - Elbie 16:52, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
I can't make it out to Nanaimo, but there's always Annacis Island on the mainland 2009-07-28_49_-122 --Xore 18:00, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
Saturday, 18 July
This is the rarest of Vancouver geohashes: a theoretically accessible point in the north of the graticule. It promises to be a spectacular hike, whether or not there is a trail around the edge of the lake to the exact point.
- Oh man, I wish I could. I have an all-day volunteer commitment on Saturday though. -- Rhonda 15:44, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Tuesday, 14 July
Anybody up for a hike? The point is near a whole network of hiking trails around Siskin Lake/Robin Lake area, in the mountains near Buntzen Lake.
- When? -Robyn 17:56, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
Saturday, July 11 in West Vancouver
Moving discussion to planning page
Friday, July 10 in North Vancouver
This looks transit + hikeable. It's not 42 km. -Robyn 15:40, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
- It's entirely doable. It's even close to the main hiking trail there. I'm not sure if I can make it though; I made plans for the day. - Elbie 16:50, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
Tuesday, July 7 in Langley
Anybody for 2009-07-07 49 -122? - Elbie 13:53, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
Sunday, July 3 in Courtenay
Anybody for 2009-07-05 49 -125? - Elbie 16:32, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
Saturday, June 20, 2009 (in surrey)
Anyone for 2009-06-20 49 -122? -- Xore 20:37, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
- I'm just checking my schedule now. i think i can make it. i'll probably skytrain to king george and then bike to 88th -Plypkie 03:44, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
2009-06-18
Hey all. today's point is on the horseshoe bay - nanaimo ferry route. the ferry should hit it either on the way there or the way back. unfortunately i'll be sleeping in preparation for another night shift :/ The -122 point is in northern Pitt Meadows, a hundred feet into the woods from a road. would be a pleasant bike ride from coquitlam center. -Plypkie 13:40, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
2009-06-14
People should go to this; I'll be advertising it at the UDLS talk! - Elbie 14:29, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
2009-06-13 pemberton possible?
I can't go, but i just realized this looks distinctly doable in a rather undoable graticule. Note that this would be virgin for this graticule, i believe. -Plypkie 07:44, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
- Wow, and damn. I have a commitment for today, but you're right - and it's even on a stretch of road that isn't too hairy, so there might be room to safely pull off the road. -- Rhonda 14:40, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
- No kidding, that's extremely lucky -- and darnit, I'm going to be in Whistler for a week around Canada Day (perhaps I'll have to retro-geohash it). --Wenslayer 15:11, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
Cowichan
If I were in Vancouver today I'd think about trying to bag the first geohash in the Lake Cowichan graticule.
- (cries) in a car that's a 3.5hr trip one way to the water's edge. Not counting waiting for the ferry. -- Rhonda 17:51, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
- Unfortunately Lake Cowichan geohashes are not going to get much easier than that. -Robyn 18:14, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
- I know. Dammit. I have other commitments, too. :-( -- Rhonda 18:37, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
2009-06-03
Whoa, it's in the city.
After work, anyone? -- Rhonda 15:17, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
Geohashing Day
So what shall we do for Geohashing Day? How will we as a graticule go above and beyond our usual zaniness to commemorate this special occasion? Ideas on the day's talk page.
2009-05-20
Hey, I thought I already edited this. It's doable today, via Horseshoe Bay-Bowen ferry, bike to the spit nearest Gambier, kayak to point. But I don't really really want to do it. I don't want a wet kayak for Geohashing Day. Am I a lazy-assed whiner who should go do it? -Robyn 16:20, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
- Personally I'm doing chores today, and preparing for tomorrow. I don't think wet kayak is a huge issue; it doesn't have to be dry before using it again, only before storing it. Besides, we just did a hash point close to there, but from the other direction. -- Rhonda 16:53, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, we did. It's the first time I've left a point unpursued when I knew I could get it. It calls to me. But I have earplugs. -Robyn 17:12, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
2009-05-12
It's a boat hash, transit accessible if you have a portable boat.
2009-05-02
Saturday in Garibaldi needs to wait for more snow to melt, so I'm going to Bellingham. -Robyn 17:31, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
2009-04-25
It's on Gambier Island, right where I went to summer camp, and I still know someone who could give us permission to go ashore there. I have a social event I have to be back in Vancouver for at 7 p.m. Anyone interested in renting a motor boat? -Robyn 22:25, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
As long as it doesn't involve riding a bike uphill. -- Rhonda 00:28, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
2009-04-08
Anvil Island - Robyn will be arriving at Porteau Cove about 1:30 pm to launch her kayak for this expedition. Other boats welcome.
Damn! I'm in class today! Booo! Have extra fun for me! And be safe! Thepiguy 17:25, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
- Once again, I was the first to meet a cool new Vancouver geohasher. She is even crazier than me, and she has one success now, but no land geohash ribbon! Five and a half hours in an inflatable kayak. Booyah! -Robyn
2009-03-09
King Ed and Knight! MylSh and Thepiguy will be arriving via transit at approximately 6:00 +/- error in transit with snow. Putting that extra hour to good use!
- 06:00 or 18:00? -Robyn 17:42, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
- Now, if I were living in Vancouver I could qualify for a deja vu hash. My husband and I drove by there several times last summer :( --Meghan 18:09, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
- But do you have proof? We'll dedicate the geohash to you, Meghan. What song shall we sing in your honour? -Robyn 18:19, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
- You make me smile. No song necessary. Looking at the weather report you should have some excellent snow for sculpting :D --Meghan 18:40, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
- Now that I think of it, you can build a snowman named Meghan. That'll probably be the only way I can hash until I get lucky. --Meghan 19:56, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
- We shall all build snowmeghans! Thepiguy 23:44, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
2009-01-31
hey...the vancouver and surrey ones are pretty bleh, but i'm gonna attempt the bellingham hash today with a few people. be there or be trapezoidal ;) Twilightcity 18:10, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
2009-01-24
Bowen Island! Be there or be square! Thepiguy 04:07, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
Oh man, we were going to go to Hope. Now I can't decide. -Robyn 04:25, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
I don't think I'm going to be able to even make Bowen tomorrow, something came up. Take lot's of pictures in hope! Thepiguy 06:03, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure which one I'm getting to yet. -Robyn 06:14, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
Ha! First-time hashers...and we did it the old fashioned way...by asking folks where to go! Who'd have thunk it would be in the middle of a freakin' LLAMA PASTURE??? --Twilightcity 03:34, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
Ha ha ha, anyone who didn't go missed out! This was a good one! -Robyn 04:55, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
2009-01-17
I'll be there at 4:00 (probably earlier), will you? Thepiguy 03:07, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
