The United Kingdom is a country in northwest Europe. It includes the British Crown Dependencies of the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. There are 73 graticules, some of which are shared with the Republic of Ireland. The Canterbury graticule includes about 100 square metres of a beach in France -- but only at low tide.

History and UK law make geohashing particularly interesting and often quite easy. The country is covered with a network of public footpaths and bridleways guaranteeing public access. Hashpoints are rarely far from a road or one of these paths. Most of the terrain is easy but there are more extreme mountain, moor and marine areas where geohashing is less of a walk in the park.

Bad weather preventing expeditions is unusual. The mountains of Scotland, Wales and the English Lake District can be more dangerous with fog, snow, wind and wind chill. Traffic congestion is much more likely to disrupt plans!

Events

All geohashers are cordially invited to the 10th anniversary 2018 geohashing day meetup in the Cambridge UK graticule.

  • GPS jam planned around the island of Benbecula during the month of July 2016 should make geohashing considerably more challenging.

Expeditions

There have been far too many expeditions in the UK to individually list here -- see the graticule pages themselves for lists of expeditions in each area.

Graticules

This section lists the UK's graticules, along with the date of the first geohash in each. If no date is listed, the graticule can be assumed to be virgin. The list is roughly arranged by region, and graticules are listed from NW to SE in each region. Graticules covering more than one region are listed by the one containing the place the graticule is named after. The Sligo, Ireland, graticule is also listed under Northern Ireland as it contains a small portion of the UK. Active graticules are listed in bold.
