This graticule covers the part of the United Kingdom (UK) from 52° to 53° latitude, and from 0° to 1° longitude. It contains the city of Cambridge, and several smaller towns including King's Lynn, Wisbech, Thetford, Ely, Newmarket and Haverhill.

Cambridge is the UK's most active graticule, and although most of its activity is based around Cambridge itself, new hashers and meetups in any part of the graticule are most definitely welcome. Meetups are always good!

Future plans

  • On Sunday 19 August, Benjw will be attempting the 2012-08-19 52 0 and 2012-08-19 52 -0 hashes, both of which are near Cambridge, setting out from Cambridge by bike at 3:30pm or thereabouts. Leave a note here or use his talk page if you'll be going too.
  • On Monday 20 August, Benjw (and Ali0sha?) will be attempting the 2012-08-20 52 -0 and 2012-08-20 52 0 hashes, both of which, again, are very near Cambridge. And again, this will almost certainly be on a long bike ride in the afternoon. Planning to reach 52 -0 at about 3pm, and 52 0 (i.e. this graticule) at about the 4pm canonical time, but those plans may change after discussion on Sunday afternoon. Leave a note here or use Ben's talk page if you'll be going too.

The area

The Cambridge graticule covers not only the county of Cambridgeshire, but also parts of Hertfordshire, Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and Lincolnshire. Most of it is land, but the Norfolk coastline falls just inside its northern edge, and, further west, it includes The Wash in Lincolnshire. Much of the terrain is quite flat, with some hillier land in the south, and much of it is farmland.

Due to the symmetry of coordinates about the prime meridian, the neighbouring Northampton graticule, to the west, will never provide a closer hashpoint than our own graticule, no matter how close to the border you are. However, if the day's coordinates fall close to the meridian, then the hashpoints in the two graticules will be quite close together, offering a good opportunity for a Double geohash.

As most of the graticule is very flat countryside, and Cambridge itself is arguably the "cycling capital of England", this graticule offers excellent opportunities for bicycle geohashing.

Past activity

See also: Category:Meetup in 52 0.

Cambridge enjoyed spikes of activity in mid-2008 and early 2009 reaching a peak in 2010. For a while, it was the UK's most geohashed graticule (with 46 expeditions to 28 October 2010, of which 39 were successful). Here's what's happened recently.

2012

2011

  • 20 November 2011 (Sun): Sourcerer visited the hashpoint ten paces off a public footpath between Old Newton village and the main line railway from London to Norwich, 2 miles north of Stowmarket, Suffolk, UK.
  • 20 March 2011 (Sun): Sourcerer reached multihash 4 of 5 in a Thetford Forest field about a mile west of the Elveden Center Parcs holiday centre west of Thetford, Norfolk, UK.

2010

Twenty seven expeditions took place during 2009. These are detailed on the 2010 archive page.

2009

Nineteen expeditions took place during 2009. These are detailed on the 2009 archive page.

2008

Five expeditions took place in 2008. These are detailed on the 2008 archive page.

Local Geohashers

See also: Category:Geohashers in 52,0.

The following are known to be currently active:

  • Benjw is in central Cambridge. He hashes by bicycle and car, albeit sporadically, but checks the wiki frequently and is always keen for meetups.
  • Gooseh is bike powered, though willing to cycle within a 15 mile radius of Cambridge provided it's sunny. He can occasionally procure 4 wheeled petrol powered methods of transport. He's unfortunately in more Northerly climes during term time.
  • MagicIan is in the Norwich graticule.
  • Sourcerer is also in the Norwich graticule.
  • Stephen Turner is bike-powered.
  • Transhumanist is in the Northampton graticule, but still considers himself a Cambridge resident and is working on improved means of transport.

Other hashers have previously been active in this graticule; they are listed on the 2008 archive page.
