Deletion of old expedition planning pages

Hi Robyn! I hope this is the right place to ask (if not, please move it to where you think it should be). I recently started tagging old "yyyy-mm-dd nn ee" expedition pages for deletion, where they contained only very preliminary planning or no useful content, such as "point is in a field, i might go there if the rain stops" or "the algorithm sucks, this point is in the ocean"; pages that were created in May or June last year when rules for doing that sort of thing had not yet been established. I had asked about it in #geohashing, and we decided those pages weren't really needed anymore and merely clutter up the wiki. A few others joined in the delete-tagging frenzy and now we have a lot of these pages tagged. Joannac is (understandably) reluctant to delete so many pages (which she thinks may someday be interesting to look back to), and is asking for your expert opinion on the issue. What should we do with those one-line, single-user expedition pages that never even really deserved the "Expedition planning" category? --dawidi 23:36, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

I must admit to being a little dismayed when I returned from my vacation to see the frenzy of planning deletions. I think the failures and planning are part of the process, and I wouldn't have voted to delete any page that consisted of someone considering a location and how to get there, or simply cursing their fate at not having a boat. I have seen a few that look like automated page creation with no thought, and wouldn't mind discouraging the people who seem to sit and compile lists of geohashes but never try to reach any. But "clutter up the wiki"? If we're running out of room, we haven't left enough space for a growing sport. I think I have created a few "planning" pages that I knew at creation were for expeditions that would never happen, but they reflected days when all I could do was look. I wouldn't want them to be deleted. Good on Joannec for showing the stuff a moderator should show. I wouldn't delete anything unless its presence was actually posing a problem, e.g. causing confusion by being a duplicate page or a wrong name graticule page. -Robyn 00:04, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
I actually have to admit that I'm one of those who would prefer to see a cleanup. Anyway, Not so much on the pages themselves but in the categories - I don't think it's appropriate to have dozens of "It's a field, does anyone go?" pages in a Category:Meetup in X Y and Category:Meetup on YYYY-MM-DD. Because there neither was a meetup/expedition in that place nor on that date. Currently the template puts the pages into these categories automatically, and some of these categories leave the impression that a graticule has been very active in the past although the only activity was creating the pages. So if we want to keep these pages, I'd at least vote to take them out of the regular expedition categories, similar to the retro expeditions. --Ekorren 00:26, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
Hmm. I think the cause of Ekorren's discomfort was in the original decision to name the categories "Meetup" when often no meetup is involved. I am never entirely happy with those tags, either, but I do support creation of such pages early in the planning process, so that people clicking through from the peeron page see that others might be going. The Expedition tag distinguishes between the "hey, it's a road" and "I went and no one else came" submissions. One argument is that it is appropriate for a planning page to have the proper meetup tags, and it isn't reasonable for the system to require people to go back and edit planning pages when they don't make the meet. -Robyn 00:51, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
I too have been deleting the odd early page so perhaps I'd better take an interest in this discussion. I think I agree with Ekorren. To me, the "Meetup" tags indicate a successful mission (no matter how many people showed up) -- either to the hashpoint itself or to an alternative Saturday location. And for unsuccessful missions, the "Expedition" and "Failed: reason" tags are useful. That rather seems to me to be what they are for, taking the "Meetup" tag away from a planning page seems reasonable. (The slight problem then is that it can't show a meetup location map any more.) I am unsure about whether I think that it's better to keep the "Expedition Planning" category for those which are being currently planned, or whether to leave it on all old expedition planning pages. I would still support the deletion of one-line planning pages, though, which are the result of two seconds' tapping at a computer and not any actual planning. -- Benjw 06:23, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
People's levels of verbosity range. What if some of those planning pages you delete are both the initial planning and the placeholder for expeditions that actually happened, but whose expeditioners haven't written them up. They went but didn't meet anyone, so didn't see the point. They haven't finished the roll so haven't developed the film (not everyone has digital already) and intend to ome back and finish it, but you deleted it! Anyway, I don't see what harm the patheti planning pages do. The Meetup tags don't indicate a successful expedition. They indiate the time and place of the geohash being disussed. I don't think it's a good idea to change the system that is ore to identifying the things. And maybe my tomorrow's geohash will be achievable. -Robyn 06:40, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
I tend to agree with Robyn here (and you are always welcome to come south and expedite, er, geohash with us, okay, me). Deleting a "this sucks" page from a many moons ago and from a user who hasn't made a wiki edit in as many months is probably okay, but anything else should be left. Active users can (of course, and arguably should) mark their own planning pages for deletion - I have a few times. --Thomcat 06:54, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

January 22nd Multihash

First glance at the map put the hashpoint on I-5, but satellite examination has it off E Lake Samish drive. Been by that lake many times, but only on the interstate. Good luck! --Thomcat 18:08, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Hmm, while I'm here, I saw you mention a while back that you had a collection of favourite geohashing quotes...I think, my memory is a bit odd. If so, have you any to add to my little collection here? -- UnwiseOwl 02:49, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Um, didn't I start that page? If not, then there's a very similarly named page somewhere that I did start. -Robyn 03:08, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Hmm, I started that one, I think...I couldn't find yours, but I did look. Hmm, maybe I'm getting old and my memory is broken.-- UnwiseOwl 03:09, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Found and integrated. And then did weird things to the formatting. You think maybe every second one should be a different colour or something? -Robyn 03:18, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
How about we put them all in quotes boxes, then see waht it looks like? You wanna do it, or want me to? -- UnwiseOwl 03:23, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure all quotes would look a bit lopsided. Maybe a few more, but not more than every second one. -Robyn 03:27, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Ugh, formatting this is nasty...I might leave it to someone who understands, as mine keeps being...weird. Another one for joannac's list, I guess... -- UnwiseOwl 04:05, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Categories

Sorry for messing up a few of the categories. -- relet 22:24, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Ah no problem. I didn't look closely, but I think you were improving ribbon templates. Seems like a worthy cause. -Robyn 07:27, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi Robyn! I understand that it doesn't count when we don't reach the actual coordinates, but shouldn't there be a bit of a celebration when we get as close to them as possible? I feel a bit deflated when two out of the three categories on my page go FAIL. And we had such a nice time! --virgletati (how do I get the timestamp?)

What do you think about just replacing "Failed" with "Thwarted"? I think that gets the point across without the rancor. Virgletati 20:26, 24 March 2009 (UTC) (!)
That's pretty much what I said on your page already, isn't it? There are simply too many pages to change if there is no shortcut, however. Have a look at the Category:Failed - No public access and then multiply that by all the "failed" categories.
Turns out it is a nice thing to do, actually :). I am asking Thomcat right now about a new category, Not Reached - Got lost, or something like that. And I was glad that the first TC category I got was yours. Oh, and... I'm a girl :). --Virgletati 20:55, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Ah, thanks for the correction. I was thinking "Virgil" and not thinking beyond it. I would vote against "got lost" and here's why. If the person is writing up the expedition, then they clearly got unlost again. So why didn't they complete the expedition from there? Wouldn't it always be classifiable under an existing category? If they got so lost they required emergency rescue then there's still a reason they got lost. Fewer reasons seems better to me.
On the other hand, if I go geohashing one day and never come back, I want you to lobby really had for a Not reached - Died category, even though that is Mother Nature. You must, however, check my GPS to ensure that I wasn't on the way back from a successful geohash. -Robyn 21:04, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

Re: Ninja hunting

I just saw your comment on Talk:2009-02-22_32_-90. I just wanted to point out that there is also a handy E-mail this user function on the left of every user page. This one should work even if the user disabled monitoring of his user talk page (but not if she disabled emailing altogether). I don't know if you knew, but I hope to increase your ninja uncovering odds this way. :) -- relet 09:56, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Re: Last Man Standing Ribbon

Yeah, I was just using it to figure out how the ribbon templates work. I was working on implementing the Back from the Grave honorary achievement and wanted to make sure I didn't break the existing functionality before I edited the real last man standing template.

Ugh. I dislike that one because it fractures the possibilities for any given day, and there's no chance of meeting someone there. But it's not always about me, is it? -Robyn 04:32, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
Not always about you, Robyn, no. Just most of the time ;). In reality, no-one is going to go for a retro hash if the actual hash is even the barest possibility, so it probably doesn't have such an effect as you might think. -- UnwiseOwl 04:35, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
I'll allow the warm fuzziness of that rationalization to protect me from the retro hash. -Robyn 04:44, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

This weekend in Surrey

Wow, what great wilderness hashes for Saturday and Sunday. Unfortunately I have little free time this weekend, and they don't look like quick trips. In these locations, would you expect shallow compacted snow, deep snow, a mud pit, or just a little damp? Also, do you think they're fenced off from the closest road? Be my guide! Juventas 00:51, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

I don't have knowledge of that specific area, but I see that Saturday is in a park, so you should have access. I suspect that the "Private Road" is parksboard access and will be gated with one of those swing bar gates that stops cars and trucks but not bikes and pedestrians. I also suspect there may be trails leading close to the geohash from 128th.
The terrain I predict is steep, heavily treed, with wet debris underfoot, maybe a little bit of snow but not much. Bear in mind that I have been out of town for a month, so I'm a little out of touch with what the weather has been up to.
Sunday: oh my, that's quite the spot. I expect it to be treacherously steep, heavily treed, with no artificial barriers to access, but very difficult going. Were I to try it, I might try to go up along the bank of the creek.
Both spots are at about 300-400 m elevation, so some snow, but I think the forest canopy is sufficient that there will not be much depth on the ground. I await your report to find out how wrong I am! -Robyn 02:12, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
Turns out I won't have transportation today, and tomorrow is too far when you combine the driving and the hike. Alas. Juventas 19:02, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

etrex tracklogs

Just saw your note...

Do I understand right that the point you fail at is splicing the long tracklog into several parts? If they are saved as GPX, and everything else fails, you could edit them manually in any kind of text editor. GPX actually is a XML variant, i.e. a pure text format which is more or less human-readable. That's what I'm currently doing myself (I have no idea what the software supplied by garmin does - it's windows software, after all, so it probably won't work here anyway - and haven't taken the time to search for decent track processing software yet). Also mind that if you save a track internally in the etrex (as opposed to downloading it from the freshly recorded data), timestamps are removed, which will confuse some programs and make the log less interesting. --Ekorren 01:30, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

The Garmin software is called MapSource, and I have heard it works with Wine. With some extra tricks you can even transfer data from and to the GPS with Linux.
When you download the data from the GPS, you get all data. My GPS starts a new tracklog every time I turn it on, or after it lost reception. What I do is save that as "all20090307.gdb" and then I delete everything except the tracklog I want, usually the most recent one. Same for the waypoints. I save that again as "geohash20090307.gdb" and *that* is the file I put in gpsvisualizer. You can delete the tracks individually.
Oh well, I also rightclick on the track and go to the properties of it, where I can see all logged points. I delete the very first and last bit, so it isn't very obvious where this man lives that leaves his house every saturday.--Arvid 07:06, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Mine is mapsource, too. It came with either the GPS or a heart rate monitor I bought from Garmin. I tried to save the tracks for just the expeditions, but yes, the device contains every track for every time I've ever turned it on. I'll experiment with deleting parts of it. -Robyn 07:17, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

I don't know. I saved what I thought was the track from my February 25th expedition as the default, a gdb file and then uploaded it using this website but the result had tracks from everywhere I'd ever been since I bought the GPS. Can you talk me through it? Can I mail it to you? Is there another way I can take the data off the GPS?-Robyn 01:34, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

The etrex records everything into an internal memory of 10.000 points (1.500 on very old models, probably more on better models - I own the low end etrex H). When the memory is full, it starts to overwrite the oldest parts. So, unless you manually delete the tracks in the GPS unit from time to time, you will always get a full 10.000 points worth of past logs. Depending on what you were doing, and what recording accuracy you set, that may be a few hours or a few weeks. For an example, on highest compressed accuracy, the 1000 km/19 hours trip to 2009-02-22_51_10 yielded about 8.000 points. The default setting seems to range around 40-50% of that.

I fear I can't "talk you through it" because you probably have to use totally different software I don't know at all. You may send me the file, though, and I'm quite sure I'll be able to cut out the interesting parts (give time range in UTC, please). However, I'm sure there is some good solution for your problem out there, and I hope someone will come up with it. (And now I'm off to bed, anyway - past 3 am here). --Ekorren 02:06, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

This is the website I used. If the files work (they display temporarily) just send them to me by email and I'll put them up for you!

Latitude 49

Thanks for leaving the hard ones for me ;). Fortunately I am honing my dormant French skills and visiting Québec government websites for better maps. -- Meghan 21:17, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I knew you liked a challenge. And then I went off and started naming bits of Antarctica. The one where I stopped in Québec is obviously really industrialized, with that poor Abitibi park sticking out like a sore thumb in the satellite view. I assume it's pulp and paper, maybe just Mategami, but perhaps there's a local name you can find somewhere. -Robyn 21:23, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

I'm becoming more amused by the potential names in Newfoundland, especially in -55. Like Seldom-Little-Seldom :). It'll likely just end up being Fogo Island or something. -- Meghan 22:06, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

I agree, so sad not to have Conception and Dildo as graticules, I know. I'm fine with naming after a river if there is truly not one populated centre in the graticule, and if the river is both clearly in that graticule and not substatially in any other. I think the Gulf of St Lawrence one is poor, because there are many graticules that have significant portions in the Gulf of St. Lawrence -- unless that name is on a graticule that has no land at all, just the gulf, like the Atlantic Ocean ones. -Robyn 22:59, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Yes, both of those graticules have no land in them whatsoever. -- Meghan 02:53, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
Ah, then they have the absolutely correct name. I may have linked to the Atlantic Ocean when I should have linked to the Gulf. I'll go back and check. -Robyn 02:59, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Qov?

There's a Qov on kli.org who's Canadian, and one on deviant art who's Canadian and male, and one on Flickr that's into quilts. Are any of these you? -- Jevanyn 21:45, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Heh. Cyber-stalker ;) --joannac 22:10, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

I had no idea there was more than one Qov. They are like Wiki categories. -Robyn 23:00, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the assist!

I was trying to figure out how to put categories on my expedition page from today when all of a sudden they just appeared!

Now I'll know how to do them myself. Thanks for being such a great caretaker of the wiki! FunkyTuba 22:57, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

You're welcome. It's my way of showing up on that lawn to be part of your expedition. -Robyn 23:00, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

I'm New!

Just thought I should put that out there, perhaps to stem the flood of "What did you DO!?"'s that may spring up from me trying to understand my first wiki. Sorry guys, my learning curve tends to take out a few trees while accelerating to high, dangerous, speeds. Anyway, I'm excited to be here, and thanks Robyn for welcoming me. Yes, I did mean 'barter' in the classic sense of the word, knowing the equestrian club on campus may help. :) - Sprica 2009/03/13

People will just come up behind you and fix anything they don't like. You can also start projects and abandon them and when you come back someone else has finished them. -Robyn 02:10, 14 March 2009 (UTC) 1 Ah, well in that case I won't be so afraid to poke around. Not too much though! -Sprica 10:42, 13 March 2009

Cycling Gear

I bought clippy pedals! And clippy shoes! They're so awesome! Once you get over the initial "OMG my bike has my feet and it won't let go!" feeling that is. I'm biking to UBC tomorrow to test them out.

On a different note, I'm wanting to get some sort of bike bag that will let me access things while riding. Just small things like my gps or camera. I don't like biking with backpacks, I'm not sure how I feel about hanging things off my handle bars and I've heard the bags that attach to the frame can get in the way. Any ideas or suggestions? Thepiguy 06:23, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

I have a small front handlebar bag. (You can see it in pictures of the March 5th geohash). It's great for pulling out a camera or an energy bar during a quick stop, but I wouldn't recommend it for getting at things while riding, because I find it awkward to pull sideways on the zipper while riding in a straight line. You can leave it open, but stuff can bounce out. Another problem is that it has a frame, to hold the bag's shape, and the frame interferes with my light, so at night I have to pull off the bag and stow it elsewhere. Honestly the only thing I know of that is really suited to grabbing things while rolling is a proper bicycle jersey, like they wear in the Tour de France. It has a series of pockets across the back and it's easy to grab things out of them. You can also mount things in the bottle cages, or holster them around your ankles. You can definitely get a handlebar mount for your GPS. - Robyn

Canadian globalhash!

The crowd goes wild. It's even almost on land (albeit not Canadian land). Heck, it's even in British Columbia! --starbird 00:50, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

What? The 18th? It's in the Dixon Entrance to the Hecate Strait in Canadian waters north of the Queen Charlotte Islands. It would be a daunting expedition. The only way I'd have a chance is an airhash, and that would be at least a $4000 proposition from here. -Robyn 01:04, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

On the plus side, you have a whole day to prepare! :-) --starbird 01:11, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Ah, I misread the "almost on land" as "on land" and was confused. If I get a globalhash, I want to GO there, anyway, not just fly over. -Robyn 01:15, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Upon the occasion of the anniversary of her birth.

I meant to get this out faster Robyn but had a rewarding day of bloody geohashing with Liberian and the Powertool. They are a bad influence on me and I think my mom is going to make me stop playing with them. I see it's already tomorrow here but it's still yesterday where you are so maybe this is not too late. I wish you an exceptionally nice birthday and look forward to reading a comprehensive report of this day's party activities replete with photo documentation. Sorry I did not make it today. Maybe next year. --Bos 05:23, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Speed Racer achievement

Robyn, I added a 'speed' section to Template:Speed_Racer_geohash, so people can start documenting "maximum legal speed". Any thoughts? David Souther 03:36, 23 March 2009 (UTC) ps. Why didn't you join me for 2009-03-04_global? :)

pps Happy Birthday!

The speed section sounds good. Make sure the board encourages documenting low as well as high legal speeds. It's funny when the speed racer occurs on a bike path with a 15 km/h limit. I didn't join you because it was more than 15 hours driving, especially considering the weather, and I really try to avoid driving to geohashes unless I'm going there anywhere. It was much too far for me to go by bike in the winter. - Robyn

Whaddya mean, you won't bike 100 miles in a day to go globalhashing? ;) Actually, the reason I though of it was because the speed racer for 2009-03-21_45_-108 was at a stop sign, so 0 mph was the legal speed. Maybe if this gets going a bit more there might be a way to collate this info into a list or chart. Could be interesting to see. David Souther 03:52, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

I would definitely bike 100 miles in a day for a globalhash. I'm not sure why you thought I was so close. I could bike 250 km a day for two or three days running for a globalhash. However the March 4th global hash was 1,623 km away, over several mountain ranges and along roads that I suspected were blocked with snow and inhospitable to cycling even in summer. -Robyn 04:02, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

That was supposed to be 1500. Which means my guess was still short. :( David Souther 04:05, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Probably close to 1500 straight line. I used the Google Maps driving distance figure. -Robyn 04:07, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

March 29

Right now me MylSh and srs0 are sitting in class desperately trying to find a kayak rental that's open on Sunday so we can do the Comox hash. If we can find a boat I'm driving up with a van full of friends for the day. There's one more seat left, if you're interested!

Yes, I'm there.
OMG Yay! We're meeting at UBC at 6:00, and probably getting back around 22:00. I'll get you the exact meeting location soon. Thepiguy 20:43, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Sorry I couldn't make it to your birthday bash last weekend. Happy Birthday to you too!

I forgive you, but I reserve the right to complain about it my expedition report for Sunday. - Robyn 20:27, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Many fond memories of Comox. Sorry I can't meet you there. Please check on Old House restaurant and see if Portuguese Joe is still smoking salmon. And take LOTS of pictures. --Bos 19:37, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Someone told me the Old House restaurant is gone. If we don't get arrested by the military police we'l see what food options are available. -Robyn 02:20, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Main Page redlinks

Maybe we should make it a rule that you have to write a page before you link your pic in the expedition gallery? Or at least, create the expedition page and put the map in... --joannac 02:03, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

I totally think that should be the rule. I consider that it IS the rule, but that the people who don't do it don't know the rule. But it's okay, because there are expeditions we wouldn't even know about if people hadn't uploaded a picture and thought they were done. Like Cid, who may not have great English, or probably has great English but didn't want to write a report in imperfect English. So people who know better shouldn't do it, but if that's someone's entry point into reporting on an expedition, then I don't want to stop them. -Robyn 02:07, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Guilty as charged. Being both a procrastinator and a perfectionist, I'm not sure I've ever completed an expedition page within the 5-day window. Juventas 02:32, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Ah yes, YOU Juventas, should know better. Redlinks make Joanna cry. Next time make a quickie expedition report along the lines of "I'll write this up soon, please don't cry, Joanna" before linking a picture to the Main Page. And then we'll drop the charges. -Robyn 02:35, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Red Ninjas

I think that's feasible.. I'm going to look into that later today. :) -- relet 07:58, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

I probably found most of them already. I figured out that I could look at a month at a time instead of a day at a time, so I got everything but May and June 2008 (where there were so many I got tired). -24.83.1.77 08:04, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

You may also look at Special:Wanted pages.. which is sorted by "redlinks". The expedition pages turn up first, that is currently roughly at #4670. Bot wasn't very helpful there. -- 195.37.79.63 09:53, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I work in there from time to time. This was a specific task, for a particular kind of redlink, not in general. -Robyn 15:19, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Mountain climbing near Squamish

I take back the "turned tail and fled" comment, I didn't realize you actually scaled as much of that terrain as you did! -- Jevanyn 05:23, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Heh, I think I was at almost the elevation of the geohash, just on the wrong mountain. More planning next time. -Robyn 06:27, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

A kingdom for a boat

Check out Mabel Lake today, looks like an all-day trek with a spectacular destination. I wish it were this weekend, I might actually give it a go. Although even an inflatable kayak/boat would be a lot to pack for such an expedition. If it were Fall I would swim out, but at this time of year it's probably thin ice. Has anyone swam to a hash before? Juventas 20:32, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Nice. I'm getting ready to go away for the weekend to attend to some family obligations, so no geohashing for me today. For the sake of 70 m on thin ice, I would say that was a job for an air mattress on top of a toboggan. It is pretty fine. Vancouver's is crazy today. -Robyn 21:49, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
Re swimming to a geohash, I haven't seen one, but I may try one soon. There's a retrohash from last Christmas Day off the beach from Wildwood, NJ. If I get a chance to do it, I'll get a boat ride to the geohash and consider swimming to shore depending on how far it is (hard to tell from satellite shots). -- Jevanyn 15:22, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

2009-04-18

You sound determined... I'm in. I've got access to snow shoes, camping equipment, my usual geohashing gear and a shipping container full of first aid equipment we hopefully wont need. Thepiguy 00:41, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Ooh, I'd better get all my chores done. Do you have extra snowshoes? -Robyn 02:45, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
Yes I do! There are two pairs, both used only once! Thepiguy 04:36, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

I'm interested but I can't say I'm in unconditionally, because I'm signed up for the Sun Run the 19th. -- Rhonda 03:48, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, it wouldn't be a good pre-race workout. -Robyn 04:25, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
I'm planning to register for the Sun Run on Friday morning, when it turns out the co-ordinates are located on the race route. What? It could happen! Thepiguy 04:36, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
Ha ha! I typed "maybe Sunday's coords will be on the race route" but deleted it. It would be awesome. -Robyn 04:41, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
Aperantly crazy people think alike... Thepiguy 05:10, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
I did buy my GPS for running... -- Rhonda 05:30, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
I could have in theory bought my GPS for Nope. Who am I kidding. It was entierly a geohashing purchase. Thepiguy 05:33, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
More accurately, I bought it so I wouldn't get lost in the Mexican desert while travelling for work and attempting to continue my running schedule. I did actually use the "go back to start" feature when I ended up not knowing which way to go to get back to the house... (It was fun. A few Mexicans getting ready for work at 5AM staring at the crazy white chick running around, otherwise empty streets.) -- Rhonda 05:42, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

the official geohashing kayak

While not often, I do get some lake coordinates, and some that could be easier crossing a lake to get to. I thought I remember reading about your purchasing of the kayak, but I couldn't find it again. All the other reviews I could find were positive (within expectations). I understand it's at Canadian Tire for $299, that it comes with the skirt (when most do not). Does it come with a paddle? A pump? You already had a PFD? What else will I need? Help. :) Juventas 06:09, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

The link is on my user page under Future Plans. It comes with a spray skirt. Rhonda got her paddle for $30. Yes, I already had a PFD and a pump, to go with the $15 inflatable boat I used for the sunrise hash. I would recommend adding some rope for a painter, a waterproof container to keep your stuff in and a drinking water bottle. A paddle float is optional. (Of course I know what it's for!) -Robyn 06:17, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
I also linked it on the expedition report, down at the bottom where we declared it official. I bought the paddle for $30, the PFD for $60 or so, and the pump for $15, and that's all I brought (well, and food and water and rainjacket). There were cheaper PFDs and pumps but I liked the fit and mobility of the PFD I bought and the double-action of the pump. Ok, it's bulky and I might end up buying a second pump that fits inside the kayak bag, but it's so fast! -- Rhonda 06:55, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Want to go to Bellingham? I'm scared of the border! Please come with me! Thepiguy 16:01, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Anonymous scared person who is probably Rhonda turns out to be thepiguy, yes, I'm interested but have some chores to do and I think it takes me about two hours to get to the border. I ALWAYS get lost and end up on a dirt trail coming off the Alex Fraser bridge. I'm sure there's a better way through, but I've never found it. What time were you thinking you'd be at the border? I was going to go to the regular Peace Arch crossing, arriving lets say about 2:30. We could meet at 2:30 at the actual peach arch with the gates thingy. It's on the border, but it's in a park north of the US immigration control, and they'd let you hang out there, I'm sure. I'd better get cracking on my chores. -Robyn 16:12, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Sounds great! Is it possible to meet a little sooner than 2:30? That might be cutting it a little short for me. Is 1:00 possible?
Yes, see you at the Peace Arch at 1 p.m. -Robyn 16:20, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Hooray! Thepiguy 16:23, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Nope, I'm not the anonymous person :-)

I'm looking at bus schedules - thepiguy said something about meeting at ladner loop, or is it the peace arch now? -- Rhonda 16:31, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

I'm meeting Robyn at the Arch at 1:00, but depending on where/if you're cycling from I could also meet you in Ladner on the way. Thepiguy 16:41, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Translink says that the "351 Crescent beach" goes to white rock center, which is a block from what the translink site identifies as peace arch. If that's the same peace arch you two are talking about, I can take the bus directly there. And if it isn't, give me the co-ordinates of the peace arch and I can bike there from white rock center, which looks remarkably close to the border. -- Rhonda 16:45, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

That sounds right... but I'm never to sure about trusting translink... Thepiguy 16:53, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

I just phoned Translink and they confirmed that the 351 does have bike racks. Since it looks like that bus will get me if not right to the peace arch then at least within easy biking distance of the border, I only need to find out exactly where to meet you and I'll be there. -- Rhonda 16:57, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Google maps shows 0 Ave and Peace Park Dr. as "peace arch" - rather different from what translink said, but it meshes with what you said about it being right on the border. -- Rhonda 17:04, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

That's definitely it. Finding us is easy. Look for the giant wihte arch. Think l'Arc de Triomphe. Thepiguy 17:07, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

As long as I'm looking in the right park...

I have to catch the seabus in a half hour to make it to white rock center by 12:30, then bike to the border. If I'm not there by 1 will you wait for me? Robyn should have my phone number and I have hers. -- Rhonda 17:11, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Hehe! I just realized I live the closest for once! And yes, of course we'll wait for you! See at the arch! Thepiguy 17:13, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

There is a large, unmistakable white Peace Arch with little fake unclosable gates and the inscription "May these gates never be closed" right on the border. It's about the most unmissable meeting place possible. White Rock centre is not on the border: it's maybe 16 blocks north of the border. The Peace Arch is at N49.0 about 50 m east of the beach. Follow King George highway. The 99 is off-limits for bikes. I don't have your phone number because it comes up as private on my cell when you phone me. I'll wait as long as thepiguy does. I'll probably be on the same bus. And everyone stop edit conflicting me on my own page. -Robyn 17:15, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

You're just too popular for your own good! :p See you at 1:00! Thepiguy 17:46, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Games we play

I was literaly in the process of uploading an image of us playing, when you added Carcassone to the page. We think much too alike! You're always welcome to replace any of my pics if you have a better one of the same scene. My photos are documentation, not art. -Robyn 19:36, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

KoL

Are you sure? I think you must be confusing me with someone else. I don't play KoL; in fact, I've just heard about it for the first time. Anyway, thank you for your comment. I hope my next expedition will be more succesful :) Fivetonsofflax 20:12, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

A user on KoL uses the same psudonym when making forum posts. I didn't realize it was a reference to something, so just assumed it was the same person. What does the name mean, that two people would independently choose it? -Robyn 20:32, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

It's a reference to a passage in the Principia Discordia: See this page: http://www.principiadiscordia.com/book/6.php. Still, it's quite an obscure reference and I was surprised to learn that someone else uses it as a nickname. Fivetonsofflax 20:48, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

Hang on, Robyn, you're a KoLer? Is there anything I do on the internet that you don't do to? -- UnwiseOwl 23:47, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

I don't twitter, barely use Facebook, and have never played World of Warcraft. -Robyn 23:54, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
Damn, me too for all of those.. ;) What's your KoL nick? -- UnwiseOwl 23:57, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
Qov. I hang out in /hardcore, take months per ascension and attempt stupid things. -Robyn 23:59, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
I'm ummmwhat there. It's been a few years since I played regularly, and I've always been slow. I think I have 3 ascensions under my belt... -- UnwiseOwl 00:01, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
I hang out in /hardcore ... and attempt stupid things. Why does this not surprise me? :-)--starbird 02:26, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I get more respect for them here, though. Did you like your road, starbird? -Robyn 02:55, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Yes, my road is most excellent. Thank you! Looking around a little, I find that there's also a song called Starbird Road, and a racehorse. I should plan to retire to a certain street in Portland (ME), Jericho (VT), or, of course, Conway (WA). --starbird 03:30, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Image Categories

I'm sorry! I keep forgetting about them until I open my inbox and I have a dozen messages from the wiki... *is ashamed*

It's okay. I wasn't actually annoyed, just having fun with the edit summaries. I type the categories into the edit box for the first picture I upload, then copy them and on subsequent pics from the same expedition, I just keep hitting ctrl-V

Hi Robyn. Here's a Template:maintained. If you agree with the idea and the wording, feel free to include it on any page that you don't want to be changed by the bot. :) -- relet 10:23, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Wait, your summary said possible expedition?

Nuts, and I don't get my bike back from the shop until tomorrow. -- Rhonda 15:17, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

I don't think I'll do it. I was thinking of trying the camping achievement, but it has to be within one km of the coordinates and I can't camp in the water. And quite frankly I'm too lazy to cycle 80 km with that kayak in the trailer. THink BC ferries would charge me by the foot for the trailer? I think I'll clean my yard. Or play Lemmings. -Robyn 15:27, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Oh, ok. I need to add a bike trailer to my shopping list anyway. -- Rhonda 15:39, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Woohoo! <-- terrible attempt at lemmings noise Thepiguy 00:57, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
Got all the way through Fun and Tricky, halfway through the Taxing level and then switched to Commander Keen. Wade found a DOS emulator to run all my old favourite games on the PC. I even have Star Trek: 25th Anniversary. Don't do the math. -Robyn 01:08, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
OMG! Commander Keen is the greatest video game ever! Thepiguy 04:33, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
Isn't it just? It is so well designed and playable and fun and the keystrokes are amazingly natural, and it ran in 1024 k of RAM, maybe even 640 k. -Robyn 04:45, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Page changed emails

Do you get emails when a page on your watchlist has changed? I do, and recently a few have been going missing. Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this. --joannac

I do, and I haven't noticed any missing, but then I often delete them unread if I already know about the changes, and if I don't know about the changes, I can't tell. I believe I have received an email for every change I have noticed. -Robyn 00:51, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
Hrm, I'm definitely missing emails. How many pages are in your watchlist? Is this a sign I should clean out my 618-entry-long watchlist? --joannac 23:58, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
Ok, definitely something funny going on. Some pages are not turning up on "my watchlist" (but show up when I click "view and edit watchlist"). They are also not the same pages that I'm not getting emails for. Very odd indeed. I suspect I need to do a cleanup at some stage. --joannac 00:33, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Weird. I watchlist everything I edit, and I edit almost everything I read, and I read almost everything on the wiki so ... -Robyn 01:09, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

I only just realized I had hit fifty as I was dictating to Wade how to update my userpage. "Now increment that number by one ..." I'm wearing the party hat from your birthday hash; that should do. -Robyn 05:45, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Camping hash

I was chatting with Juventas in irc last night, and we figured that if we pre-declare a long weekend to be a camping hash weekend in one or the other of our graticules then prepare for anything, we could all three of us do an expedition together some time. I suggested the Victoria Day long weekend (16/17/18) because it's close enough to start plans but far enough off that we aren't too rushed - and it's generally considered the start of camping season. Nothing firm yet, but I thought I'd bring it to your attention. -- Rhonda 15:29, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

So I should make sure I'm back from my secret trip by then, eh? -Robyn 15:39, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
Or propose a different weekend that suits your schedule better. -- Rhonda 15:45, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
This is more exciting than waiting for Christmas to come. :) Juventas 07:23, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
Of course I found out recently that Victoria Day long weekend won't work for me, because I have family stuff happening. We should try to pick a weekend that works for all of us. So far I know I can't do Victoria Day, anything in the last week of May (Sat to Sat), or Father's day weekend. -- Rhonda 19:02, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
The last weekend of May doesn't work for me as I'm probably (finally!) going back to work, but any other time in May is fine. I haven't booked a European flight after all. We could be all prepared for camping on the Friday morning and then check out all the graticules between us and Juventas and pick the most promising for the meetup. -Robyn 19:10, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
It's the last two weekends in May I can't do. I'm going on an Alaska cruise with my awesome mom and it leaves Saturday the 23rd. Actually, for me May weekends are mostly booked already, unless we can organize something for this weekend or Mother's Day weekend, those are the only ones I have available. And Mother's Day weekend I may not be up for anything too strenuous due to some planned very minor surgery that will leave me with a few stitches and almost certainly unable to carry a backpack for a while. So, um, for me it looks like either this weekend or June, or later. Argh! -- Rhonda 19:40, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
This weekend, then. I'm going back to work in June, and if I'm not then I have to start looking seriously for a new job. -Robyn 20:29, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
Juventas told me that this weekend doesn't work for him. I just found out today that my stitches will be postponed a week so the 2nd week in May now does work for me. What's the update for you two? -- Rhonda 05:31, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
Second weekend in May works for me, that's the 9th-10th, yes. -Robyn 05:36, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
May 9/10 is good for me as well. Here, there, in between. Camping or no camping. We'll have to see what comes up. Juventas 06:57, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Okay, so we'll just pick the best spot(s) we can find in graticules between you and us. -Robyn 15:32, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Alpha Mountain

You think that's a day trip? Let me know if I should rent some snowshoes... -- Rhonda 16:05, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Get a free account on bivouac.com and read this. There are people less sane than us. I would suggest that we drive to Squamish, and cross the river by kayak. I don't know about the snowshoes. A lot of points fall in this range, and the approach requires crossing the Squamish River by boat. I'd like to try it sometime, but maybe in the summer. -Robyn 16:31, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Hm, that does sound more appropriate for a summer weekend. Especially the part where he talks about glaciers. Saturday's point is closer to the road but still a mountain climbing experience. What do you think of that one? -- Rhonda 16:47, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

So if people post comments to you on your talk page, where do you post your replies to them? On their talk page, or back on your own talk page? Wade 00:07, 2 May 2009 (UTC) P.s. Maybe, no, no.

Generally you post a reply under the comments, but if they're new and you're not sure they have their preferences set to watch pages they comment on, you can go over to their talk page and let them know you've replied. -Robyn 00:22, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

A serious article about the Klingon language

I came across this article on Slate.com and knew you would appreciate it. There are some nice observations that would apply to speaking Klingon, or geohashing. -- Jevanyn 15:32, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Heh. That's ok. In its own way it's actually quite fun to get everything organised. More fun reorganising the wiki than actually going geohashing at the moment, anyway -- haven't been on an expedition for over three weeks now. Meh. Too much to do at home -- which is the main reason I'm sitting reorganising the wiki instead of doing any of it. Ho hum. By the way, I hope I'm not taking over any wiki-edit projects you were planning to do. Do tell me to go away if so... :-) -- Benjw 17:38, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
Good gods no. I love that I can wish something were done and then other people see the same need and just do it, so in the end I don't remember what was my idea and what was a someone else's idea I just agreed with. -Robyn 17:42, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Mouse Over Day

We seem to have two options for tomorrow -- Texada Island, which would require a car and four ferries; or Bellingham Bay, which requires boats and a border crossing. Do you have a preference? I lack a car. - Elbie 16:06, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

I was looking at Bellingham, with biking/wading/swimming. It looks shallow, and I too have a wetsuit. I really don't like using a car, especially paying ferry tolls for one. Yesterday was ouch. Texada would require four ferries? I saw HB-Langdale, Earls Cove-Saltery Bay, Powell River-Blubber Bay, then kayak from Blubber Bay to the hash. (It's in the water, on the beach, or on the cliff there. I don't think there is any road access to that beach area. -Robyn 16:24, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
I meant four ferries for the round trip (two to get there). Anyway, I'm not so sure I'll have time for the Bellingham hash; I need to make up for taking Thursday off work. - Elbie 18:06, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
Then I count six ferries for the round trip. Or you could go HB-Departure Bay, Little River-Powell River, Powell River-Blubber Bay. But that's still three ferries each way. How are you doing it in two?
Let me know before tonight if you are able to go on Mouse Over Day. Hey! Let's have a Saturday Alternate, in the morning, in North Vancouver, transit accessible, like at Lonsdale Quay. Or Canada Place! Rhonda can come, we can see her off for the cruise, and wave and everything like in the movies! -Robyn 18:14, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Not a fan of Egmont?

You're not out geohashing today? I though today would have been a piece of cake! Although, as you said, the ferry tolls are rather expensive. :D Thepiguy 17:28, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm not paying for ferries or gas anymore except Saturdays. It's too expensive. Eve on a bike you can pay $40 over the course of a day. -Robyn 17:37, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
No kidding. Although I guess my ferry expenses would drop a lot if I stopped eating waffles every time. I think trains are going to become the new ferries for us here. It's so tempting to try every hash! Thepiguy 17:46, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
I bet. I bet you wake up every morning look at the geohashes at a civilized hour the day before and go "OMG! It's not in the water! It's not on a glacier! It's less than a kilometre from a road! I have to go!" -Robyn 17:55, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, except most of them end up in farmers fields. The W30 rule is pretty great, you should come try it! Thepiguy 18:35, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
Farmer's fields? Welcome to my graticule. One of these days I will count the number of times the point hits fields and urban locations in a given month. It should prove interesting... --Meghan 19:06, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
Hey, that's an interesting idea. I might try that too. Maybe each day in June the way Robyn did for Vancouver. -- Benjw 21:00, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Prize poultry

Wait, was there a reason it stayed capitalised? Did I do all that moving for nothing? --joannac 23:48, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

I pasted the "how to use" template and it didn't work. So I tried it with two Ps and it did. I figured the upgrade was on its way, but for now there might be people who didn't know how to make it work, so simply changed the "how to use" to match the existing template. If the template had worked with Pp, I'd have left it alone. -Robyn 23:55, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
I just realized that I must have attempted to award myself the consolation prize right in between you changing the tmeplate and changing the user text. -Robyn 23:57, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
Sorry! I guess this is a good reason to ask first, edit second. So it's all good now, right? --joannac 00:04, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
Wait, no it's not. Most of the consolation prizes have extra capitalisation? So it should be Prize Poultry? (capital P)? What's going on? --joannac 00:08, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
The consolation prizes were named by me, before the naming conventions were set. Someone only recently created ribbons for some of them, and perhaps followed the old naming conventions. I personally like Book Title Capitalisation on the name of the award, so the ones I make have that, but I still comply (now that we have them) with naming conventions for page, ategory and and template names. I think you've just found a little pocket of not-yet-renamed stuff. Rename away. -Robyn 00:33, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
I guess I should feel noticed that I keep running into stuff that people want to fix.  :-( JimL 04:14, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
The wiki is in a constant state of being fixed, so you'll find that all the time. When it's someone else's graticule page, or especially user page, a lot of people tend to hang around and give suggestions rather than just fixing stuff. I'm pretty brazen in that when I'm sure of what someone meant, I just fix it. But I didn't want to presume that you weren't planning to build a page all about the McMinnvilles of the world. I got chewed out by a Flight Service Specialist from McMinnville once. I called him "Portland" or something and he didn't like that. It's the first thing I think of every time I see the name. -Robyn 04:31, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

NOOOO

...I knew I shouldn't have gone to bed last night. *leaves a chocolate brownie for Robyn*. Come back, I'll try and make ben be nice to you. --joannac 21:14, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

I've broken Robyn.  :'-( -- Benjw 21:28, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
Offer her your brownie too. Maybe two brownies will tempt her to come back. --joannac 21:35, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
Come back, Robyn. We need you; the wiki is boring otherwise. *Leaves chocolate brownie on table and goes away to hide*. It's one of Joanna's brownies, so it probably tastes a lot better than my cooking. -- Benjw 21:40, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
Please, Robyn? How many people do I need to get to edit this section for you to come back? *goes to poke the regulars in #gh* --joannac 21:48, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
Come home Robyn! We miss you. It's been, ummm, hours! I forgive you for moving my userpage around. I was just trying to make it easier for everyone to get my username right, since the wiki was so fussy about case. JimL 21:56, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
You'll always be JimL to me. I'll make a point of it. It's actually really hard not to edit every page I look at. I'm getting twitchy about the disagreement between the description of Hashiversary on the Achievements page and the description in the achievement itself. -Robyn 23:37, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
Joanna's a bureaucrat. She ought to be able to make pages change without showing up in the "recently changed" list. Then we can secretly put twitchy things into pages to keep Robyn having to fix things.  :-) JimL 00:08, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
But if they aren't in the recently changed list, how am I going to see them, JimL? -Robyn 00:44, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
You'd have to check every page in your spare time. But I think this is a bad idea and we should all leave Robyn alone. :-) JimL 00:50, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
I like it better too with a capital L, but it's a pain often for other people and from time to time even for me. I'd be fine if the Wiki was case insensitive about usernames (as I think it should be), but it isn't. JimL 06:49, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
You will have more success tempting Robyn with good quality chocolate ([1]) than with brownies, although they're not bad. Sadly, I think you'll have less of Robyn's attention. I predict her priorities for the next month are:
  1. working
  2. legally mandated beauty sleep
  3. geohashing
  4. wiki editing
  5. eating
  6. everything else
The good news is that her computer actually works. We had 15 minutes or so while we though her computer was dead, which would affect the wiki editing.
--Wade 18:32, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
We send (good) chocolate to our friend in Whitehorse from time to time. Do you have the same lack in the southern climes of our Northern neighbour? JimL 19:32, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
I haven't been to a store yet up here to see. I know you're just taunting me, but FYI "northern" in this province starts at 53N. Unlike Ontario where "northern" ranges right to the US border. Really. Canada doesn't really have a south. We have "urban", "northern", "arctic" and "high arctic". Yes, Canada has two steps further north than "north." -Robyn 14:49, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
Actually, Canada's "south" is Arizona and parts of Mexico. --204.50.113.29 16:30, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Crossing the border on bike

So, from 2009-04-16 48 -122, I see there's some sort of advanced border crossing procedure for cyclists. Would you mind explaining it to me for 2009-05-31 48 -122? - Elbie 20:24, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

It's a little bit different at every border crossing. The short answer is: skip ahead of all the cars to the front of line and go in the pedestrian entrance with your passport. Sometimes you wheel your bicycle right in with you and sometimes you leave it in a rack outside. Look for signs. Going south, the American agent who approves you will give you an orange post-it, one for the whole group, with a scribble on it. You give the post-it to one of the officers at the back as you exit into the US. They're the guys searching cars, so you may need to stand around a bit forlornly holding the post-it, before they notice you. Going north, they just let you go.
If you cross southbound at Peace Arch it's especially tricky because they are undergoing construction, so it's difficult to find the sign. At Peace Arch, go up the left side of all the traffic, and just before you get to the customs building you will see some big orange barricades with a "do not enter" sign. Go in there. (I'm guessing that's going to end up on the quotes page!) Here's a picture of us going in there, and not getting arrested.
2009-04-16 48 -122.bikecrossing.jpg
. Keep going that way, past a set of disused border crossing gates, and a pile of what look like Christmas decorations, until you find a bike rack, just south of the building. Park your bike there and go into the building through the south doors. They seem to be eager to process cyclists quickly. Even if there's a big line they will sometimes pull you out to a side counter and send you away with your post-it. So not really an advanced border crossing procedure, just a maze.
If you can't find the pedestrian entrance, sometimes it's on the other side of the building, past the car booths. Just get off the bike and push it, walking slowly and non-dangerously, along the sidewalk nearest the customs building. Eventually you'll either find an entrance with bike racks outside. or someone will yell at you and tell you where to go. If there is no minimal vehicle traffic you can also just ride slowly up to the car booths and ask them where to go. I've been cleared at one of the car booths when there was no traffic, and it was easier for the guy to just clear me than to give directions to the pedestrian area.

I took pictures at one of the Canadian crossings, but the cranky official came out and told me I had to erase it, because it showed car licence plates. -Robyn 20:53, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

P.S. I know it's irrelevant now, but I note that on your expedition planning page you allowed two hours for the border crossing. You do not have to wait in line behind the cars. Go straight to the pedestrian crossing both ways. It's never more than a few minutes. -Robyn 04:10, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

2009-06-02 Globalhash

57.020558,-125.662643 - in British Columbia. Might be impossible in a single-day expedition, but I wanted to leave a message just in case. --ilpadre 14:06, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

If I were not at work, I would mount a geohashing expedition right now like the world has never seen. (Don't worry, Wade, I wouldn't fore you to come). I'm even at the 56 latitude today, but unfortunately not in BC. When I have all the time in te world, the points are in the ocean or Antarctica. And then when I have to go to work I get two in a week in my own province. Sigh. I won't have much choice where I geohash until July now. I may be able to overfly those coordinates as a retro in a few days, though. -Robyn 14:42, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
Getting me all excited... but when I check the globalhash map, it shows the point at 86.9N for 2 June. Is this a case like the one where we thought it was in California until it turned out to be in Antarctica? -- Rhonda 16:18, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
Yes, exactly the same case. The drwilco map is officially broken for some time now. If you toggle the debugging info on, it shows "Market open on 2009-06-01 = " but no DJIA value behind that, because for some reason it failed to retrieve the value. The sad thing is that in this case it doesn't just calculate no point but calculates with a value of 0.00. --Ekorren 16:23, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Fort Nelson

If you know anyone up there, and are looking for some small talk, ask if they know Calvin and Juanita. I know its not that small town, but they're well-known. As requested. Juventas 06:06, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

I will make it my mission to find them, and cause them to geohash. -Robyn 07:36, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Why Robyn is a silly

Because you're addicted to geohashing. Your userpage even says so. Hope that helps. --joannac 07:44, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Res ipsa loquitur. --starbird 14:05, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Forgiven

But that doesn't mean I won't try to get even }:-) Jevanyn 14:40, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

Most excellent. -Robyn 14:48, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

Will you be back in town for 2009-07-07 49 -123?

I'll be trying for a birthday hash on July 7. Want to join me? - Elbie 05:23, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Of COURSE I want to join you, but unfortunately I don't know when I'll be where until my company tells me. I think I'll be back, but I can't promise anything. -Robyn 05:27, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Bot review help

Robyn, could you please look at the output on User:AperfectBot/Test_Page and give me feedback on it? Also, please review the pages that are linked from the top section. I would like to bring the bot live on Thursday night. Thanks! --aperfectring 00:11, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
