2010-03-28 (sunday) globalhash

The globalhash is in the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho graticule, only 800 km from Vancouver! Go Vancouver! - Danatar 08:00, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

Well, Google maps says it is an 8 hour drive (I'm going to guess 10 to allow for problems), and what seems to be a 2 hour hike (short distance, but straight up a mountain) from the road. Assuming the last "unnamed road" actually exists. It is on the map, but the satellite view doesn't make it look like much of a road. Next, I see where the closest GA airport is. The hash point itself seems very accessible by helicopter, if only I knew someone with one of those. --Wade 17:12, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

I'm not Robyn, but I doubt that it will be possible to get access there, without having a very uncomfortable conversation with the RCMP. The Chilliwack graticule seems achievable, but may involve a long hike. --Wade 02:56, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, jet parking? During the olympics? Well, any other time you'd at least get airport security involved, but during the olympics you'd probably be held, searched and interrogated as if you were a terrorist. The pilots and owners of the airplanes parked either side of that geohash have to go through three layers of security and a special Olympic body search that leaves less to the imagination than do spandex skating suits in order to get to that geohash. I couldn't even get permission to fly over it. We'd probably be questioned for meeting outside the airport fence. -- Robyn (using Wade's computer)

2009-10-11 White Rock or Nanaimo?

The Sunday hash for the Van graticule is near Nanaimo and looks accessible (in a forest), but I'm hesitant to be on the Ferries during a long weekend. The hash for the Surrey graticule is off the coast of White Rock, but might be on land at low tide. Anybody interested in either? Any clue if the latter will be a land or water hash? - Elbie 21:42, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Low tide, such as it is, will be at 5:00 AM on Sunday (http://www.waterlevels.gc.ca/cgi-bin/tide-shc.cgi?queryType=showFrameset&language=english&region=1&zone=10&stnnum=7735). I'm not sure I care about Geohashing enough to be anywhere other than in bed at 5:00 AM. And I can't commit the entire day (I'm busy between 8:30 and 15:00 PST), so a Sunday trip to Nanaimo is not for me. --Wade 22:11, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

2009-10-10 Victoria or Burlington?

Saturday's Victoria hash is in a heavily wooded park just north of Victoria, and the Bellingham one is in Bulrington, a nice 2 hour or so drive south. There is the issue of ferries and borders on a long weekend, but I do have a secret weapon to get priority boarding on the ferry. I think I'll try to arrange to have the day free on Saturday. I dunno, but I guess an hour or more. The Canadian dollar is high (0.95 USD), and there's Christmas selling season startng, so there might be a lot of Canadians heading south for shopping. --Wade

Robyn and I are debating how one might get there. She thinks a bicycle has no border wait time, but I think a bicycle is insane for that distance. She's insane, so doesn't see a problem with that. This is the rarest of Vancouver geohashes: a theoretically accessible point in the north of the graticule. It promises to be a spectacular hike, whether or not there is a trail around the edge of the lake to the exact point.

Because I am a lazy sack of crap, I didn't make it up here in the previously stated times. I have 5 vacation days yet to schedule for the rest of the year. I am out of town the week of Christmas and the weekends on either side. Other than that, however, I am open to using my vacation for something important, like geohashing and visiting crazy Vancouverites. Agreed. The problem is that Germany (where the script was designed for) has different colours for field/mountain vs city, but Vancouver and the parts of North America I looked at doesn't. So tweaking the colour values won't help with the way the script is now. See Talk:Land_usage. -Srs0 04:39, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Print-outs of Translink's bike maps

I just discovered that some of the printers at work support greyscale printing on 11 inch by 17 inch paper (tabloid). I've printed off copies of the Translink Bike Maps on this -- it's certainly more readable than printing on regular letter-sized paper! If anybody wants me to print off some tabloid-sized maps for them, let me know and I'll bring it along to whatever hash we're both at. - Elbie 02:30, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
