The Portland metro area graticule is at 45 N, 122 W. It completely encloses the city of Portland and some surrounding areas. The graticule is almost entirely land, much of it open and undeveloped, making this one of the best areas for geohashing.

Meetup time

It was proposed, and no objections were raised, so the official meetup time for our graticule(s) is now 2PM from Oct 1 to March 15, and 4PM for the rest of the year. I'd say this applies to neighboring graticules as well.

Planning and Coordination

View of the west hills of Portland, Oregon

Many of the folks in the Portland, Oregon graticule hop over to the McMinnville, Oregon graticule for hashpoints there. The planning was happening here on the Portland page, but now with the User:AperfectBot picking up Category:Expedition planning pages, it makes sense to move the planning to the expedition page itself once someone is committed to going.

Graticule History

2008

This graticule has a long (for geohashing) and storied history. It all began with the world's first ever geohashing expedition in February of 2008 during beta testing. After the algorithm was announced, Portland maintained some modest activity, with plans or expeditions happening once a week or so into August.

2009

Unfortunately, though, this graticule, which is wonderful for geohashing, was then inactive until January of 2009, when activity started trickling back in. The most active geohasher in the area, Jim, started at this time with his first expedition on 2009-01-19. Activity continued to increase over the warm and generally pleasant summer months. APR, one of the area's more active geohashers, was relocated here (from Florida) in September 2009, though he had visited (and geohashed) here earlier in 2009. Activity briefly took a dip in September, but returned to more normal levels in October and November, the same timeframe that Michael 5000, another fairly active geohasher in the area, discovered geohashing. Since then, the community has been fairly active, ranking 4th in November 2009, and tied for 2nd in December 2009 for expeditions.

2010

The beginning of the year continued pretty much like the end of the previous one, with Portland being 4th for expeditions in January. February and March maintained the activity for the area, but there was more graticule hopping, causing Portland to drop for number of expeditions. However, in April, activity exploded in the area. Portland had 9 expeditions, the most in its history in a single month, and McMinnville tied its previous record of 4 expeditions.
