About the New on the wiki announcements template
This template is designed to be displayed on the Main Page to highlight new developments on the wiki. It has two sections, one mainly to tell and one mainly to ask. These announcements should stay up for about a month, unless their relevance passes sooner.
The template can be added to a user or graticule page if you use that over the Main Page. Simply add {{New on the wiki}}
to the desired page.
What's new on the wiki
This section includes new ways to waste time and to save time on the wiki. There's more to the wiki than posting pictures on the main page, and this is intended to be a more efficient way for users to find out what's new than hitting the "Recent changes" button every thirty minutes. Announcements include new tools for planning geohashes, monthly Most Active Graticule records, special events and wiki policy. Announcements about remarkable expeditions should generally go in the Hall of Amazingness, not here.
Now discussing
This section gives all users, not just those who happen to be on the geohashing IRC channel at the right moment, a chance to have their say on developing geowiki standards, qualifying for achievements, and planning special events. Particularly active discussion about a single expedition or geohasher might be linked here if the result of the discussion is likely to affect geohashers as a whole.
Upcoming Announcements
Announcements here are formatted, linked to pages that explain them, and ready to be placed in the template. Place suggestions that aren't yet fleshed out on the Talk page.

- We have now reached 15000 expeditions!
- Proposal to switch to CC BY-SA - should we change the wiki's license?
- The PHP version underlying the wiki engine software has been updated. Let DanQ know if you spot any new (or old) bugs.
- Happy first anniversary of the wiki's revival, if you count the 'birthday' as the date of the first user account creation plus the announcement on IRC!
- The subdivision geohash is an achievement now.
- The Dark Ages achievement is now official. Tag your expeditions with the ribbon!
- APBot is not currently updating the wiki. Jim has notified APR about this.
- SIGSTKFLT is doing a slow rollout of Ribbon2. Add a comment if you see any problems.
- It's now possible to upload and embed GPX tracklogs of your expeditions.
- Globalhash maps should now work! (You may need to purge/edit-and-resave globalhash expedition pages to show the changes.) Feedback welcome.
- Expedition/graticule maps have been switched from Google Maps to OpenStreetMap; pages will update when next resaved/purged. Shout at Dan if they're not working right.
- The current events bot has found its way to the new wiki. Who left bananas out?
- Dan Q is attempting to resurrect the wiki. Don't assume he knows about the problem you've discovered; let him know.
- FippeBot tagged the location of past expeditions between 00:00 and 07:00 UTC on the following weekdays in August: 06, 07, 08, 09, 13, 14, 15, 16.
- Carabiner (at Peeron) data is back up and pulling from Crox. Newly-created wiki pages should be accurate; older ones may need to be regenerated.
- Carabiner (at Peeron) and the wiki maps are *broken* again. APBot has been adjusted to use a different DJIA source, but it now shows blank entries for a week in the future as a result.
- Eupeodes updated the Last man standing achievement candidates list.
- Carabiner (at Peeron) and the wiki maps are working again.
- Carabiner (at Peeron) seems to be unhappy so the wiki maps are not working.
- Sourcerer recently tossed up an idea to update the algorithm and there's some serious debate going on to discuss options. * Joanna finally upgraded to latest MediaWiki. Please tell her (irc or Talk page) if anything is broken.
- Hijackal has resurrected the Meetup graph!
- Now over 10,000 expeditions!
- The expeditions and grat pages are generally broken. Folks are working on them. See WikiProblems. Would anyone object if Joannac tried upgrading MediaWiki?
- The general #xkcd IRC-channel is planning a meet-up in London in April. Go there as a geohashing ambassador!
- APBot is offline due to moving until Thursday or Friday. Jim's attempts to play APBot are less than satisfactory. A number of wiki updates will be delayed.
- Fuse multiple achievement ribbons into silly combinations using the Combo ribbon template.
- Check out the Geohashing Day expeditions at 2012-05-21 and the Mouseover Day ones at 2012-05-26
- Explore the history of geohashing and follow users on this interactive map. (Description)
- The current events bot has been updated to once again allow per-graticule expedition lists! Find out how to add your graticule.
- The Meetup Graph is being updated. Add yourself and people you've met. Then go meet more people to make the graph grow!
- Explore the history of geohashing and follow users on this interactive map.
- Twelve geohashers went on seven expeditions on Pi Day 2012. Five pie achievements were earned!
- Eighteen geohashers went on twelve expeditions on Leap Day 2012 and reached eight geohashes (and counting)!
- Guidelines suggest that individual geohashing expeditions not be announced here, but the sheer awesomeness of a successful Antarctic globalhash suggests otherwise.
- Tomorrow is π day! Get that Pie geohash achievement!
- Geco is a peeron-like coordinate calculator using the more reliable DJIA data from crox. It is available at http://relet.net/geco (Documentation).
- Leap geohash achievement accepted! Go geohashing on Leap Day! You know you want to!
- Zigdon has relocated Peeron services from irc.peeron.com to carabiner.peeron.com. A redirect was helping the Peeron interactive map page, but has now broken. The static graticule maps inside the wiki are now fixed!
- Some people claim to have seen correct coordinates on peeron during the day, others didn't. Better still don't trust them. If you did and it's too late to go back and visit the correct ones, you might be eligible for the Blinded by Science consolation prize. Feel free to blame your least favourite politician.
- The peeron source has no data for 2011-10-21, 2011-10-22 and 2011-10-23. As a result, the "reference implementation" is producing bad coordinates. Use the "anthill" calculator (and the geo.crox.net source) until the issue is resolved.
- The issue with recently uploaded pictures triggering error messages should be fixed. Talk to joannac if there are any problems
- A Slate article about GPSes, and how the Sendai earthquake may have affected GPS accuracy.
- Most folks have survived the
raptorrapture and Geohashing Day . See the reports at 2011-05-21. Google GStatic images are working now. - The current events bot should be back up and running. Please let APR know if you see any issues. All pages since the crash should be updated shortly.

- The images in the gallery now link to the expeditions. This required yet another change in the GalleryItem template. Read this (again)!
- The current events bot is periodically crashing, so the automatic expedition lists may occasionally be stale. APR is aware of the issue, and is trying to fix it.
- Note that Friday and Monday are NOT Dow Holidays. Coordinates for W30 for Monday and E30 for Tuesday won't be available/correct until 9:30AM EST on Monday. A number of the coordinate calculators don't understand this, though. The Wiki has been correct, and Peeron finally appears correct, but be careful for now.
